According to UNESCO, it is estimated that 1 in 10 girls in Sub-Saharan Africa miss school during their menstrual cycle. Many drop out all together once they begin to menstruate due to lack of awareness, correct and sufficient information, and sanitary products.

This should not be so. Join us to ensure that girls and young women are not stopped from acquiring adequate education and having a chance to a better life because of menstruation. Join us on this path to making menstruation a normal fact of life.

When families struggle to access enough nutritious food, the impact goes far beyond hunger. Children’s health, learning and development can be affected, while economic hardship, displacement and climate shocks can make already vulnerable households even less food secure.

This #WorldFoodDay, under the 2026 theme, “Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.”, we are reminded that tackling hunger and malnutrition requires solutions that are practical, inclusive and built around the realities of the communities they are meant to serve.

At Plan International Nigeria, we are supporting communities to reduce the risk of malnutrition by strengthening food security and livelihoods, promoting nutrition awareness and helping children, adolescents and families access essential services that support their health and wellbeing.

For children, especially girls, good nutrition can make a real difference to their ability to grow, learn, participate and thrive. That is why our approach looks beyond immediate food needs to the wider conditions that influence whether families can access nutritious food and remain resilient in the face of shocks.

Building a more food-secure future will require sustained investment, stronger local systems and solutions shaped with the people most affected.

Because nourishing tomorrow starts with the action we take today.

For many girls, the climate crisis is not just about changing weather. It is about the extra responsibilities they carry at home, the time they lose, and the opportunities that become harder to pursue.

“Girls may spend more time helping their families through fetching water, cleaning their houses and managing all the household responsibilities, which can definitely affect their education and opportunities.” — Maryam , Girls Get Equal Champion, Sokoto State

For Maryam, these challenges go beyond the environment. As families face climate-related food and economic pressures, girls may take on more household responsibilities, leaving them with less time and fewer opportunities to focus on their education and future.

But girls must not be seen only as victims of climate change. They are part of the solution.

In this #ChangeHERForecast conversation, Maryam calls for girls to be educated, empowered and heard, recognising that investing in girls today is essential to building stronger, more resilient communities tomorrow.

Her forecast is a future where every girl is empowered, heard and given the opportunity to make a difference.

Because when girls have the knowledge, opportunities and voice to shape climate solutions, they can help create a better future for everyone.

Change her forecast. Change her future.

Climate change can sometimes feel like a distant issue. But for many girls and families, its effects are already part of everyday life.

“Sometimes when we talk about climate change, we often make it look like it’s something far away. But no, this is something that is constantly affecting women and girls every single time.” - Envorh, GGE State Coordinator, Nasarawa State

For Envorh, those impacts are visible in the everyday choices people are forced to make, a girl travelling farther to access water, or a family struggling to put food on the table as rising costs place greater pressure on already limited resources.

And when these pressures deepen, girls can experience the consequences differently, affecting their wellbeing, opportunities and ability to thrive.

In this #ChangeHERForecast conversation, Envorh makes an equally important point: girls cannot be left out of the conversations about the climate realities affecting their lives.
Their experiences matter. Their voices matter. And they must be part of shaping the decisions and solutions for a changing climate.

Because changing her forecast means recognising what girls are facing today, and ensuring they have a meaningful place in shaping what comes next.

Change her forecast. Change her future.

For children affected by crisis, access to education must go hand in hand with safety, inclusion and protection. That means building strong systems and partnerships from the very beginning to ensure that interventions respond effectively to the realities children face.

Against this backdrop, Plan International Nigeria commenced the Strengthening Access to Inclusive Education and Protective Environments for Crisis-Affected Out-of-School and Vulnerable Children in Damboa, Mobbar and Kala Balge LGAs, Borno State project, and last month convened a Project Start-Up Workshop to align key stakeholders around its implementation.

The workshop brought together Plan International staff, project partner Unique Care and Support Foundation @casfod_nigeria , relevant government ministries and agencies, education authorities, and adolescent and youth representatives, including Girls Get Equal Champions.

Together, participants reviewed project milestones and implementation priorities, clarified roles and responsibilities, identified key action points and strengthened coordination for effective delivery.

The engagement reaffirmed a shared commitment to expanding access to safe, inclusive and quality education for crisis-affected children, while ensuring that protection, participation and accountability remain central to implementation.

With support from the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations and through stronger partnerships and coordinated action, we are helping create pathways for children and adolescents, especially girls, to learn, lead, decide and thrive.

“What happens when girls are in leadership positions?”
For the past five years, on the International Day of the Girl Child, and every day through the #GirlsTakeOver initiative with @plan_nigeria, we have celebrated the power, potential, and leadership of girls across Nigeria.

This year, the answer became even clearer as we brought together former Girl Child Ambassadors, alongside other remarkable young girls and women. Hosted by H.E. Anna Westerholm, Ambassador of Sweden to Nigeria, the gathering sparked inspiring conversations on leadership, opportunity, and driving positive change.

Their insights, ambition, and vision for the future reaffirmed a simple truth: when girls are empowered to lead, communities thrive, perspectives broaden, and societies become stronger.

On this International Day of the Girl Child, Sweden remains committed to opening doors, expanding opportunities, and championing girls’ leadership and participation at every level.

The future is not something girls should wait for. It is something they should help shape today. 💜✨

Today, on International Day of the Girl, we celebrate girls not simply for the futures they dream about, but for the change they are already leading, often in the face of barriers that continue to limit their rights, choices and opportunities.

In Nigeria, only 48.8% of girls of lower-secondary-school age attend school at that level, according to MICS 2021, while the 2024 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey shows that one in three young women aged 20–24 were married before their 18th birthday. These realities show why investing in girls’ education, rights, leadership and participation remains urgent.

But these statistics do not define girls.

Across Nigeria, girls are speaking up, challenging expectations, influencing decisions and leading change in their schools, communities and beyond. Through education, advocacy, climate action, civic participation and leadership, they are showing us what becomes possible when girls have the power, opportunity and platform to shape their own futures.

This International Day of the Girl, we call on governments, communities, development partners and the private sector to listen to girls, invest in their rights and leadership and create meaningful spaces for them to participate in the decisions that affect their lives.

Because girls are not waiting for the future to happen to them. They are already changing it.

The forecast is changing. Girls are leading the way towards the #FutureGirlsWant.#ChangeHERForecast

Climate action does not always begin with grand gestures. Sometimes, it starts with what we know, what we share and the choices we make every day.

“I believe girls can take action on climate change in simple but meaningful ways. We can start by educating ourselves and others” - Deborah, Girls Get Equal Champion, Gombe State

For Deborah, girls have a role to play in responding to climate change, beginning with understanding the issues affecting their communities and helping others understand them too.

But meaningful participation also means creating space for girls to learn, contribute their ideas and take action in ways that reflect the realities around them.

In this #ChangeHERForecast conversation, Deborah reminds us that girls are not only affected by climate change - they can also help shape the awareness, behaviours and solutions their communities need.

Because when girls have access to knowledge, the confidence to speak and opportunities to act, their everyday choices can become part of something bigger: a more resilient and equal future.

Change her forecast. Change her future.

Climate change is not only changing our environment; it is changing the conditions in which girls learn, live and grow.

“We need to hear their voices, include them in climate decisions, thereby creating a safer space for these girls to learn, to grow and to thrive.” - Humpiya, Girls Get Equal Champion, Adamawa State

In her community, Humpiya has seen how flooding, extreme heat and poor sanitation practices affect girls, disrupting access to schools, making movement more difficult and creating additional challenges around their health, hygiene and wellbeing.

But girls should not only be seen through the impacts they experience. Their voices, ideas and lived experiences must also be part of the decisions and solutions shaping climate action.

In this #ChangeHERForecast conversation, Humpiya reminds us that meaningful climate action must create space for girls to participate, be heard and influence the decisions that affect their communities and their futures.

Because when girls are included in shaping climate solutions, we are not only responding to today’s challenges; we are helping create a future where they can learn, lead, grow and thrive.

Change her forecast. Change her future.
