XYLITOL (Planet Mu)

Esta noche en almitas.fm escuchamos a Xylitol, proyecto de la productora y DJ Catherine Backhouse, en un especial dedicado a sus dos trabajos para Planet Mu: Anemones y Blumenfantasie.

Su música conecta jungle, garage, breakbeat y música cósmica con sintetizadores, electrónica centroeuropea y una particular sensibilidad melancólica.

Si Anemones construía contrastes entre la música de baile y la electrónica vintage, Blumenfantasie profundiza en la memoria: recuerdos, épocas y estéticas que se cruzan entre elaborados pasajes de jungle, atmósferas sin ritmo y una programación breakbeat más audaz.

En ese universo conviven influencias y conexiones inesperadas: desde Source Direct hasta Broadcast, pasando por el krautrock de Amon Düül II, la experimentación industrial de Nurse With Wound, el grime de Wiley y la melancolía electrónica de Miaux.

Una música donde distintas épocas parecen encontrarse: íntima y contemplativa, pero sin perder nunca de vista la luz estroboscópica y los pies en la pista de baile.

The album is rooted in hip hop, but its cast tells you how far it travels. Abbas Zahedi @abbzah, @richieculver, and @armandhammernyc contribute vocals and poetry. @lesterst.louis brings cello. Che Chen of 75 Dollar Bill brings guitar. The producer and sound designer @_____seraphim______ contributed textures and sound designs throughout. Samples run deep, from records pulled from charity shops to market stalls on road trips across the UK.

The artwork, by Iranian-born artist and architect Elham Goodarzi, extends the album's logic into visual space. Since 2023, Goodarzi has been manipulating archival photographs of Middle Eastern architecture, some dating back to 1915, taken by European photographers travelling through Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Palestine. She layers, erases, repositions, and layers again, producing structures that feel like they belong to an architectural movement lost somewhere between history and the future. The buildings are recognisable but impossible. They look like ruins that haven't happened yet. Frozen in a state of change, as Goodarzi describes them. The video for “Cyphers Become Sifr” emerged from time spent together by Saint Abdullah, artist Abbas Zahedi and filmmaker Rebecca Salvadori while developing A Forbidden Distance, a live audiovisual work by Salvadori, Saint Abdullah and Eomac.

During this encounter, the artists discussed and filmed archival material, reflecting on how music can generate moving image—and how moving image can, in turn, generate music.

A spoken-word contribution shared by Zahedi on camera became the starting point for “Cyphers Become Sifr,” released by Saint Abdullah and Eomac on Planet Mu.

The film carries Salvadori’s distinctive approach to intimate portraiture: observing people through gestures, pauses and moments of reflection, and allowing a portrait to emerge from sustained attention rather than direct explanation.

The video returns to the encounter from which the track originated, completing a circular movement between lived experience, filmed portrait and sound: a moment became an image, and the image became music.
