Invitation: BURNLEY PLANT FORUM - SPRING 2026 @unimelb_burnley

 Innovation from specification to supply

Sourcing plants is changing in the industry. Following a recent industry survey, we identified pressures of climate adaptation, increasing costs and time lags that are impacting designers and growers alike. From planting design, specification, procurement, production and selection - getting the right plant to the right place at the right time is a challenge.

Join us for a panel discussion by those who are addressing industry issues in innovative ways. Options are available for growers, designers and clients to rethink business as usual.

We are grateful to the panel for sharing their perspectives and approaches across the supply chain, including:

DESIGN -  Carolyne Blackman, Vivid Design & ABC radio presenter @carolynblackman_

SPECIFY - Edan Weis and Shimon Regev, SuperSeeded AI Planting design & scheduling @superseededai

PROCURE -  Todd Gallagher - Evergreen Connect  @evergreenconnect

GROW -  Symone Brown, Tissue Culture Australia @mansfieldspropagationnursery

Starting July 2026, I will be regularly sharing notes from teaching, research, practice, field, and plant/people studies.

Fresh after semester 1 teaching, I was inspired to begin this series with a review of the Landscape Design subject @unimelb_burnley

FRICTION-MAXING was the modus operandi - an action-packed, hands-on and thought-provoking course with loads of drawing, plants, books, discussions, outdoors. We combined learning about plants with design methods , in which students collaborated, experimented and created by keeping plants at the heart of every design decision.

Special thanks to the epic effort of students, support of colleagues and generous contributions by:

I love coming to work each day @unimelb_burnely Iit’s a source of inspo for many people - over many generations. So, it’s a treat to share with anyone who is interested in discovering urban horticulture— which is all about greening in our cities.

Urban horticulture is multi (and inter) disciplinary sciences that includes horticulture, ecology, food production, waterways, forestry - and works with green infrastructure, design, community, industry and lots of research. Situated in the historic Burnley Gardens, the campus is the horticultural jewel of Melbourne .

The Discovery Day on Sat 25th October 10.30am-3pm is a chance to share Burnley’s offerings.

There will be research and artist talks, garden tours, plant sales, exhibitions, book sales, activities and CWA refreshments - there’s something for all.

Chat to passionate and dedicated colleagues that are working across a range of disciplines+ learn more about study options at Burnley - including the Graduate Certificate of Garden Design (which I will be co-ordinating in 2026!), Graduate Certificate of Arboriculture and Master of Urban Horticulture.

Also, learn about research in horticulture, urban greening and waterways, ecology, and sustainable timber products.

Ask gardening questions and learn about therapeutic gardens, compost, herbs, biodiversity, sustainable gardening and the Melbourne Arts Precinct Transformation.

Pls DM me for more specific details - see you then! taken in Wurundjeri Country by @plant.agent

Cracking Grand Final long weekend visiting botanic gardens at Melbourne’s Cranbourne @royalbotanicgardensvic and @melton_bg with my bestest horty mates. Poetic planting combos never cease to astound me - the gothic Macropedia in the Wierd and Wonderful garden, vibrancy of Grevilleas inc groundcover ‘Winter Delight’ and the unsexy, yet enduring hummock grass , Triodia. Regular visits to Cranny in Bunnurong country for almost 20 years has been an education and a gift - esp to planting and design enthusiasts. For me, the Euc Walk has come into its own with contrasting bark textures, canopy cover and contouring of characterful mudstone blocks. Plus, still admire that entrance of Euc. mannifera, Callitris and Allocasuarigna taht immerses visitors into the iconic Australian Garden.

Equally impressive, my first time visit to Melton Botanical Gardens blew me away. Not since my early hort studies in WA during the late 90’s have I experienced such a dazzling array of species in one place - ensconced in a suburban developement in the Western Volcanic Plains of Victoria. A community driven endeavour and vision of planting based on biozones is something to behold - the capacious arrangement of species , economy of resources, and raw passion of volunteers. All manner of Hakea, Darwinia, Eucs, Eremphila, more and more were flourishing. It was a bonus to encounter the glorious Grevilea petrophiloides subspecies. magnifica, which we were fortunate to find in the excellent nursery. Special thanks to @garth_henderson h for sharing his eagle eye and Canon pic + fun taken in Wurundjeri Country by @plant.agent

A generous celebration hosted by @tcl_studio marking the 55 yr career of Paul Thompson - an icon of Australian planting design. The co-creation of the Australian Garden in Cranbourne @royalbotanic gardensvic is amongst many of his artistic and expert contributions to the landscape architecture profession . He is irreplaceable as a mentor to many - including me - tho his impact is long lasting bc he collaborated so extensively including @rush.wright.associates, @oculusstudios and many more + served on many award juries for @aila_national @aila.victoria + photography with @ben.wrigley + featuring in countless publications

The night captured the imprint Paul has made on us including speeches by the legendary Paul Fox and TCLS emerging leaders Enoch and Lucas. Kate’s arranging of the luscious flowers by @flowersvasette and @artstemsonlygon was the va-voom factor that Paul would encourage from us all in our work in the landscape!

It’s been a privilege and joyous working with you Pail - thank-you !

The recent @woody_meadow_project symposium @unimelb_burnley showcased the research and industry partnerships over the past 10 years. Adopted across a growing number of public spaces , the woody meadow planting strategy centres on dense, diverse planting of Australian native shrubs and small trees that are routinely coppiced (cut to base) for maximum floral impact and minimal maintenance. The dedicated research continues, including Claire Kenefick’s study of growing in recycled concrete and Nicole Raine Dowling study of plant selection - pictured here counting flowers on a Thrptomene ! The possibilities for landscape makers are only beginning to emerge....
