I’m happy to share the publication I designed for The Decay of Time, which grew out of my research and was published on the occasion of my solo exhibition at Galerija Rigo in Novigrad, Croatia.

The project began with a curiosity about how the ocean holds traces of events that happened long before we encounter them, radioactive particles travelling through water, histories carried across vast distances, and changes that continue long after the people responsible for them are gone.

Through conversations with oceanographers working in the North Atlantic and a chronologist working with radiocarbon dating, I explored how we measure time, how we reconstruct the past, and what happens when the very traces we rely on to remember begin to disappear.

The research also brought me back to the Adriatic, where I spent two weeks observing the sea from my father’s fishing boat, thinking through these questions alongside my own experience of swimming. I became interested in the ocean not just as something to measure and study, but as a living, moving archive, one that carries histories beyond the limits of human perception and memory.

The publication brings together my text and a contribution by Sabina Oroshi, who reflects on the ethics of delayed consequences and the responsibility we inherit from the past.

“Sometimes long enough that no one remains who remembers the beginning.” — @sabsgram

I keep returning to this question: what happens when the world remembers something that we no longer do?

A big thank you to everyone who helped bring this project into being, especially @vervoz for helping me shape my thoughts clearly.
The publication is bilingual, in Croatian and English.

Between 1945 and 1980, atmospheric nuclear tests released radioactive isotopes into the atmosphere, which settled into the ocean. Because they decay at a steady rate, their decay marks time, allowing oceanographers to date seawater and trace its movement through the deep. A residue of nuclear violence has become a tool for measuring the planet.

The radioisotopes travel with thermohaline circulation, the global current that moves water between the surface and the deep ocean. At the poles, water cools, becomes denser and sinks, moving along the ocean floor for centuries before rising again, a cycle that can take more than a thousand years. The isotopes from the bomb tests have only begun this journey.

The installation recreates this circulation as a closed loop of water, heated at one end and cooled at the other, with controllers maintaining the flow ratio. I worked with water as a collaborator rather than a material to be controlled. As its density changes, it rises and sinks through heat, cold and gravity alone, forming a current that, as in the ocean, can be set in motion but not directed. It speeds up, slows and settles in response to its surroundings, and the work follows its pace.

The work emerges from my long-term engagement with the sea as a distance swimmer, where clock time loosens and time comes to be measured in strokes, breaths and the cold settling into the body. In the installation, this experience is returned to the water: its speed controls the frame rate of a filmed swimmer. When the current is strong, the swimmer moves in a smooth, continuous stroke. When it slows, the movement breaks into separate frames. The swimmer keeps time with the water, just as the isotopes keep time with the ocean.

The Decay of Time proposes that time does not simply pass but is produced, through radioactive matter, ocean currents and the human body that perceives them. It also carries the trace of the nuclear violence that first made it measurable.

Thanks to generous scientific advice of Denis Vermeulen of the Fluid Mechanics section at TU Delft.

“A Body Holds a Body Holds a Body”, the Geo–Design MA Theses Publication 2026, is now available for preorder at the link in bio: https://abodyholdsabody.github.io/a-body-holds-a-body-holds-a-body/preorder.html

We are very proud to have worked collectively on this publication, bringing together the sixteen graduating Geo–Design theses and their entangled urgencies at a time when the ecological, political, and institutional systems we inhabit are under increasing pressure.

Across vastly different scales and sites, the theses trace bacteria, birds, plants, minerals, radioactive isotopes, seeds, oysters, ash, tidal landscapes, ruins, intergenerational memory, darkness, simulations, and gravitational waves.

What connects the works is not a shared subject, but a shared condition: what happens when a living system is abstracted into a resource, a unit, or a baseline?

Taken together, the sixteen theses propose that thinking through scales is not simply a method, but a form of responsibility.

The publication features contributions from department heads @metahaven and thesis tutors @margarida___mendes @vervoz

Excited to share my most recent work. The Decay of Time investigates radioactive isotopes whose decay is used as a standardised unit for measuring time. Following atmospheric nuclear weapons testing (1945–1970), these isotopes dispersed globally into ocean layers, becoming a planetary residue of nuclear history, and a measurement infrastructure through which oceanic movement and temporal order are mapped.
Within ocean systems, the isotopes trace the global system of seawater movement driven by density differences, operating over timescales of up to 1,500 years, and carrying isotopic traces across the globe.

A short film situates this within the standardisation of time, framing it as a technopolitical infrastructure that converts military violence into planetary measurement. It reframes time as a hybrid material process, emerging from radioactive matter, ocean circulation, and embodied perception, where measurement becomes both record and residue of planetary systems shaped by Cold War infrastructures. This scientific fact is contrasted with the personal, embodied temporality of long-distance swimming.
This would not have been possible without beautiful and eerie sound design by @l.saof , voice of dearest @fru_tto , scientific advisory by Dennis Vermeulen (TU Delft), colour grade by @denis.komljenovic and myself.

I am grateful to exhibit the film installation at Gallery Rigo, Novigrad, until 30.9., thanks to @sabsgram and Dr. Jerica Ziherl.

The full installation will be shown at @dutchdesignweek, so more will follow soon! by @plantaasia

Vidimo se večeras u Galeriji Rigo!

Dora Ramljak: Raspad vremena
Otvorenje: 11. 9. 2026. u 19:00
Galerija Rigo, Novigrad

Negdje u oceanu još uvijek putuju tragovi atmosferskih nuklearnih pokusa. U izložbi Raspad vremena Dora Ramljak prati radioizotope kroz vodu, vrijeme i različite sustave mjerenja vremena.

Dora Ramljak: The Decay of Time
Opening: 11 September 2026, 7 PM
Rigo Gallery, Novigrad

Traces of atmospheric nuclear testing are still travelling through the ocean. In The Decay of Time, Dora Ramljak follows radioisotopes through water, time and different systems of measurement. Moving between the laboratory, oceanographic data, the northern Adriatic and her own body in the water, the exhibition explores matter as a carrier of memory, delayed consequences, and forms of time that resist linearity.

Dora Ramljak is the recipient of the Rigo Gallery Award, presented within Golden Watermelon 10.0 – Walking Through Liminal Spaces, a young artists’ programme organized by Association Metamedij from Pula. by @plantaasia
