My only anthurium seedling to grow to teenage size to date! I see a bunch of people are somehow able to get their seedlings to adult age in the span of a year, but my truly unique brand of neglect and overwatering have not netted me much success here. Lost too many seedlings to count - but this one here success has made these failures all worth it! This is a red crystallinum x luxurians “Anubis” - from @bayareafrogs ♥️ #anthuriumcrystallinum #redcrystallinum #anthuriumluxurians by @plantingthethings
Another memory post on things that work - bubbled water, with a bit of superthrive, liquid karma, hydroguard, silica blast, liquidirt. Two weeks later I have my first root popping out! by @plantingthethings
A quick note for future Cassie on importing plants: - soak in hydroguard peroxide superthrive 2-3 hrs, cut off anything soft - moss with superthrive, hydroguard, liquid karma, silica blast in a clear bin with dark top; air out a little each day, no need to mist. Make sure bin isn’t too crowded, don’t let temps exceed 80. Keep in bin for a week - move from bin to plant cabinet at 85+% RH for a week+. - reduce humidity 5% per week afterward. When moss is dry, use solution of: superthrive, liquid karma, silica, hydroguard, liquidirt, kelp fert (diluted), humic acid into water. - six weeks later, add azos&mykos into actual planting Plan to try tree fern for my next import batch, very curious about this medium! by @plantingthethings
Honestly, so blown away that I managed to grow a luffa squash that I had to have a feast in celebration. #luffasquash #luffachallenge2021 #asiangourds #asiansquash #zone9bgardening #gardeningwin by @plantingthethings
Finally - the day has come for peppers!! Last few weeks of heat in the garden season and they have decided to fruit, of course 😄 #peppers #growingpeppers #spicypeppers #biquinhopepper #jalapenopepper #thaichilipeppers #dragontoepepper #almapepper #zone9bgardening by @plantingthethings
Sweet potato fail. A few notes to jot down - Next year, amend soil with perlite or something else to keep soil airy. These grow deep and your grow bags (1’) were definitely not big enough to allow them growth this year. Give them space to grow. Try fewer varieties next year, part shade in the afternoons. Water deeply every few days vs every day. These may not work in grow bags at all, come to think of it. Fertilize with potassium and phosphorous - greensand was recommended, as well as kelp. These don’t work well with mounding technique. That’s more of a potato thing. #gardenfail #sweetpotatofail #sweetpotatoes #zone9bgardening by @plantingthethings
First sunchokes have bloomed! It took all season to get them here - I started these guys in March - and next year I really need an auto watering system. But they have really been a delight, what with their massive stalks that tempted me all season until now. I wonder how I can get these guys to grow even taller next year. Maybe some fertilizer or compost? #sunchokes #flowergarden #zone9bgardening #covidgarden #rootvegetables #summergarden #bayareagardening by @plantingthethings
Signs of life in my Asian gourds! I did a stupid thing - I overestimated my ability to sprout seeds - and thus lost about four weeks of planting time (3 rounds of asian gourds). My gourds only went into the ground in late June. Fortunately 9b has a long growing season, and it looks like I’ll be able to grab a few bitter, luffa, and calabash gourds by Halloween 😅 Unfortunately, I’m not exactly sure how I got these dang things to sprout this year, so my only real lesson learned is to start them early and buy a LOT of extra seeds in case they don’t work out next year. I’ll target a May transplant date with seed starting in April. That would net me gourds in August! #luffasquash #luffagourds #bittermelon #calabashsquash #calabashgourd #asiangourds #asiansquash #zone9bgardening #zone9b #luffachallenge2021 by @plantingthethings
#dragontoepepper A few lessons on peppers. Peppers can also have blossom end rot (or something like it, where they lack cal/mag). They can also sun burn. These suckers are delicate. They prefer a little shade, on hot days, and a lot of sun, on cool days. So you always end up with a few sacrificed peppers. They can grow big! I’ll try the topping off method next year - but this year mine certainly needed support. Reminder to self, though they grow in small, if you nurture them with fertilizer/compost/mycorrhiza, they’ll grow to be legitimate bushes. Heed the 1.5-2 ft spacing that’s recommended. 1 ft can work but is a real challenge! Next year I will likely keep the 1ft spacing in my small garden boxes out of space issues, but cage them up properly so they don’t tumble everywhere. Frying peppers are cute to grow, but remember that you don’t eat that many of them, nor have they produced prolifically for you this year. Shishito and padron starts can easily be found - don’t grow these from seed. Sweet peppers are fun but grow the big ones, because the small snacking peppers are quite annoying to eat (too many seeds and too little to munch on!) and feed them with nitrogen because they really do need the leaf shade. You like wrinkle peppers. You like biquinhos. Don’t veer too far from this level of spice - because you won’t know what to do with the spicier peppers. Ornamentals are fun but don’t give them space in your garden boxes - a pot here and there to brighten up the garden will suffice. Start pepper seeds at least 2 weeks after tomatoes - they really need the heat to grow in strong; started early they tend to die off from aphids and cold. #zone9bgardening #zone9b #covidgardener #johnnysselectedseeds by @plantingthethings
Last of the tomatoes - I expect one more harvest before I chop them down! #tomatoes #cherrytomatoes #zone9bgardening #zone9b #summeroftomatoes by @plantingthethings
Surprise vacation harvest - the best harvests are when you come home from vacation and your garden’s not dead 😂 this time my beans and okra decided to bestow upon me glorious copious fruit! #summerharvest #zone9bgardening #backyardgardening by @plantingthethings
I started these so late this year - maybe around mid-June - that I didn’t think they’d be able to fruit at all. Still, I loved their vines last year, so I thought I’d give them a head start on vining and worry about keeping their roots warm come November. I was pleasantly surprised, then, when they started fruiting already in September! Just a few heat waves to help these guys along and they are well on their way. These garden snacks are the best. #cucamelon #zone9bgardening by @plantingthethings
