Wingspan nectar tokens….Hot Take…I don’t like them! I feel they make it too easy to play any bird you want, and they are way too powerful when playing with the Oceana board (which I don’t use anymore)…Wingspan is a family light/mid-weight game so maybe it should be easy to play birds, but I miss the decision making around the food tokens and engine building when there are no wild tokens to bail you out.

My last play was with the Base game + Americas, nectar tokens wild, and it felt too loose…I’m not sure if I enjoy the Americas expansion…I still love Wingspan but my next few plays will be with nectar not being wild 💪 by @play_with_mark

Coffee Roaster….whenever I think about games I can trade in, Coffee Roaster comes to mind…then I play it and end up keeping it…at this point I’m almost out of score sheets!…the plays are all quite similar but the bag building is enjoyable and I enjoy the wonderful coffee cards with information about the different coffee regions of the world 💪 I’ll keep it and continue this cycle several months from now ☕️

Let’s Go! To Japan….I had an itch to get this lovely game to the table so I decided to try the solo mode for the first time 💪 It is very easy to implement…as you pass cards to the opponent you instantly play them in their itinerary starting on Monday…the type of cards you pass will be the cards you pick up from the draw piles and place face down on your board 👍 The opponent always scores their highlight of the day bonus which allows them to get alot of points, which is great! You score the same as a multi player game.

This will lot become a go-to solo game but I really enjoyed being able to get it back on the table. This is a great gateway game 👍

Wingspan Asia…I’m surprised how long it took me to add this game to my collection, considering I’m a bird nerd and love Wingspan 💪 The new duet board adds another layer of thinking and the new birds great….some are quite extravagant! This will be my go-to Wingspan for a 2 player game 👍

Terra Mystica…a modern classic which has given birth to two other highly regarded games: Gaia Project and Age of Innovation (I have played neither). I’m still exploring Terra Mystica and enjoying the asymmetric factions and learning to maximize my points…there truely are levels to this game!

I managed a win in this three player game with the Cultists…of course I utilized the cult tracks and tried to cycle my magic/power tokens as much as possible. 💪

Something I learned is that the designers used win/lose data from BGA to assign the factions different starting positions on the point track to make it more balanced…pretty cool 👍

A Game Of Thrones 2nd Ed….I finally got to play this epic war game based on one of my favourite tv shows (you may have heard of it?) 💪 Area control, simultaneous secret action selection, secret bidding, non-binding alliances, an epic time! The player wins if they control 7 territories with a castle or control the most castles after 10 rounds.

The first phase is the Westeros Phase where you possibly fight wildlings as a group, and flip some cards which allow the players to : add more units to the map, bid on three tracks which determine turn order/battle tie breaker/token strength/, reorganize army size, and other effects.

Next is the Planning Phase…the players simultaneously place one face-down action token on each area they control…raiding (remove neighbouring token), marching, defending, supporting (adjacent area in combat) and collect power (ie taxes and resources). Such a thinky phase, where there are group discussions about what’s happening on the board and alliances are softly made.

The Action Phase…the tokens are flipped and resolved in token and turn order. Battles happens which are quite simple to play out. Areas are won and lost, players get weaker and stronger, lose and gain castles and the balance in Westeros shifts! After this round it all repeats again 💪

This is quite a long game…after a 20min teach we played 5 hrs, but it didn’t feel that long! I always seemed engaged in the game even if I wasn’t directly involved.

There are maybe afew fiddly things but I think we figured it all out…it’s an older game so all the answers can be found with a quick BGG search 👍. One thing I found odd was the players are allowed to look at each others unique decks of cards which are used in battle…it takes away from the uncertainty abit, and does take time…this was done for about half the battles and I preferred not knowing what my opponent had, although I looked before my last two battles in round 10!

I’m very thankful I was finally able to play this epic game! It is quite hard to get six willing players to the table but hopefully this wasn’t the only time! 🤞

Caffeine Rush…a hectic real-time game where you flip cards from your deck and try to fulfill barista orders, using only one hand!…the other hand is presumably flipping coffee? ☕️ I was admittedly alone and did not play but it’s nice to see a cafe have afew games to play…they also had scrabble, quirkle, cribbage, UNO and afew others.

Endeavor: Deep Sea…a wonderful game where you run a research institute that is recruiting field experts and using their skills to sail the ocean, explore the depths, publish in journals, support conservation programs, and afew other things 💪 The main mechanism is action selection where you wisely manage and use your tokens to activate your recruited field experts…field experts are recruited every round, and the number of tokens you have available depends on how far up you have moved on two tracks…two other tracks determine the level of expert you can recruit and how far your submarine can move and dive 👍

I quite enjoyed my first play…the token management had me thinking, and I do enjoy games with tile exploration. We played the beginner scenario and I am curious how/if the other scenarios add new dimensions and make the game feel different.

Fliptoons Season 2…a deck-building, open market game where you are assembling the cast for an animated tv show…a very light card game with some randomness of your card draw (IF you have a large deck!)….not spectacular but it’s good fun 💪

High Season: Grand Hotel Roll & Write….although not as famous as its older cousin Grand Austria Hotel, this is a solid iteration of the theme designed by the same team…it’s a pretty basic game, action selection using dice, where the value of the die determines the action and the number of dice determines the strength of the action 💪.

We enjoyed this one…dice selection/placement is a fantastic mechanism, you really have to time your selection and combinations well, quite thinky 👍

I added Grand Austria Hotel to my collection recently and after playing High Season afew more times we’ll get it to the table! 💪
