In case you haven’t heard 🎉 Big win for OT students! Starting July 1, occupational therapy programs are now classified as “professional” rather than “graduate” programs for federal student loans — meaning access to higher limits: $50,000/year and $200,000 lifetime (up from $20,500/year and $100,000). This comes after months of advocacy pushing back against the Grad PLUS loan elimination and restrictive caps under the new federal loan rules. Our students recently had the opportunity to interview Amanda Piepgras, founder of Amanda’s Adaptive Martial Arts! We loved learning about her journey of starting her own business, the heart behind her work, and what it takes to create and run an adaptive martial arts program. Amanda’s passion for making martial arts accessible to people of all abilities was inspiring, and we’re grateful she took the time to share her story and insights with our future OTs! 🥋🥋

Last week, our second year students had the opportunity to visit St. Madeleine Sophie Center and learn more about their day program serving older adults with developmental disabilities. We loved learning about the meaningful activities, community, and support they provide to promote engagement and quality of life for their participants.

We had such a great experience volunteering with @lovedoes this weekend at a home that supports single moms and their babies! 💛

Through their Single Mom Programs, Love Does provides a safe and welcoming environment where mothers can feel supported, build independence, and work toward a brighter future for themselves and their little ones. We loved having the opportunity to give back and play a small part in supporting a community that makes such a meaningful difference in the lives of these families.

Over the past two weeks we have been blessed with the opportunity to visit The Luke Commission and work as OT students alongside patients, healthcare providers, and an incredible hospital community. To witness compassionate medicine in action and how listening, connection, dignity, and client centered care are at the heart of both the compassionate care at TLC and occupational therapy. It was a meaningful reminder of the kind of healthcare providers we hope to become ones who lead with empathy, listen with intention, and see every patient as a whole person.
