🔥WOW! 🔥
Congratulations to Director of Photography Paul de Lumen @pluto_pluto__
and the team for the upcoming @festivaldecannes Première selection, Propeller One-Way Night Coach film. ✈

Director: John Travolta johntravolta
Camera Support: @rarebreedswest

Camera: @sonycine Venice 2 w/ Rialto 2

✨ Seven years after his last appearance, John Travolta (Vince Vega, Tony Manero… among others!) returns to the Croisette with his very first feature as a director, presented in a world premiere.

Since Pulp Fiction won the Palme d’Or, the Hollywood star has turned each of his visits to Cannes into a memorable event. This year, he takes us on board a project that is as unexpected as it is exciting.

Presented in the Cannes Première selection, One-Way Night Coach brings to the screen the aviation passion of a man who, with more than 70 film roles to his name, is also an accomplished professional pilot.
Adapted from his book published in 1997, the film draws on his childhood memories and his first flight to unfold a colourful journey through the golden age of commercial aviation.

Written, directed and narrated by John Travolta, ✈️ Propeller One-Way Night Coach, an Apple Original Film, will be unveiled during a special screening in the presence of the actor-director.

We are happy to share that John Travolta’s directorial debut “Propeller One Way Night Coach” was shot on @atlaslensco Orion Series Anamorphic Lenses. ✈️ 💫

“I had a great experience with the Atlas Orions on this film. They really helped me capture the analogue feel I wanted for the 1963 era. I wanted to use glass with character but with minimal distortion at wider focal lengths because we had a lot of wide shots of the airplane. On the Sony Venice 2, I paired them with a custom LUT I made to mimic Kodak Vision2 motion picture film stock because John and I both really liked the look of Mad Men and Catch Me If You Can which were shot on those stocks. John was really happy with how it looked in the end, and that meant a lot to me, since he trusted me with such a personal story.” - Paul de Lumen (@pluto_pluto__), Director of Photography

"I really appreciated John’s level of preparation because it meant I could zero in on what set-up was needed for his specific vision.

"I quickly began to realise that I would use a lot of existing lights, whether it was in the old plane that we were filming in, which had this beautiful row of incandescent diffused lights, or at the TWA Hotel, which still had a lot of the old ‘60s fixtures."

Paul de Lumen explains how he used nimble camerawork, practical lighting and a child’s point of view to bring John Travolta’s long-awaited directorial debut Propeller One-Way Night Coach to the screen.

Written and directed by John Travolta in his directorial debut, Propeller One-Way Coach blends the creator’s personal life with a nostalgic love for 1960s aviation.

Captured on the Sony VENICE 2, DP Paul de Lumen had the unique challenge of shooting within vintage airplanes of 1960s, leaning heavily on the RIALTO 2 to have creative freedom within those tight spaces.

“The sensor and the form factor [of the RIALTO 2] really enabled me to stay on schedule and maintain visual integrity throughout the whole project. It has an ability to handle low light and not break down so that I could move fast in terms of using practical lighting.”

dream dump //

Growing up in the SF Bay Area, I would read the movie reviews of critique Mick LaSalle in the @sfchronicle . His reviews were always accompanied by the “Little Man”, which was a visual rating system, created in 1942 by cartoonist Warren Goodrich. The system features a small cartoon icon of a bald man sitting in a movie theater seat, expressing the critic's reaction.

La Salle was always a tough critique to please, so seeing the Little Man jumping and clapping out of his seat became a full circle moment for me. The 20 year old SF State Film student version of me is going nuts.

… and 8 days as the number 1 movie in the world on Apple TV ain’t so bad either ✨✈️ taken in Cannes Film Festival by @pluto_pluto__

We battled below freezing temperatures in NY, black ice in KC, and a wildfire evacuation in LA…. thank you to our stellar crew 🙏🏽

If it weren’t for their professionalism, artistry and positivity, this film couldn’t have been made.

Thank you to @rarebreedswest and @andrewtoth11 for all your support during production.

Also, special shot out to @chelseaturn our Production Designer, who created our beautiful period specific sets.

And of course to our fearlessly kind, thoughtful and iconic leader whom I'm honored to call my dear friend, JT 🙏🏽🎥🩵

So thankful for this special collaboration 🫶🏽

Enjoy the flight ✈️
