August is upon us and we are bringing the heat with a special “three generations of Mills College” line up!  It’s another Wednesday night show, but hey, you don’t have school the next day, so come support these amazing artists who are traveling to Madison!
.
LULA ASPLUND is an experimental composer and Chicago-based sound artist. Her work invokes voice as object and atmosphere—dislocated, refracted, tactile. Using spectral play, vocal manipulation, and fragmented sound poetry, she enters the nonlinear logic of dream and memory. Asplund has a BFA from Mills College and has performed at Center for New Music and Audio Technologies, The Lab SF, CalArts, Elastic Arts, Bohemian National Cemetery, and Experimental Sound Studio.
.
KIM NUCCI (Chicago/Oakland) is a media artist, composer/performer, and technologist. They perform with electronics/saxophones/light and enjoy creating temporary environments for interaction. Nucci’s research explores the pedestrian cybernetic body, critically examining our relationship with technology/our instruments. Their performance practice is invested in ritualism and trance states in improvisation.
.
Voicehandler plays intuitive, incantatory music grounded in the most primitive and somatic instruments — the voice and percussion — juxtaposed with contemporary, disembodied electronics. We situate ourselves in our physical and social environment through our music. Our improvisations are shaped by their setting and context.
.
The performance is loose and exploratory, at various times energetic and meditative. Rivero’s voice embraces noise, with the lines blurred between electronic processing and extended vocal techniques. Heule has a special interest in friction techniques, and embraces limited instrumentation - like a single drum and a single cymbal - as a commitment to exploring the depth of his instruments.
.
It might be a Wednesday night show, but it’s the same tried and true Common Sage format:

8pm Music

This Sunday 06.21.26 at @tornlight - experimental music by
Matt Robidoux (SF), Lula Asplund, Tim Russel, and Kim Nucci -

MATT ROBIDOUX (they/he) is a San Francisco based composer, improviser, and educator interested in the convergence of movement and sound as it relates to free improvisation and accessibility. Their primary instrument is the “corn synth” (Kinetically Operated Randomness Network) a modular system that interprets physical input from two “ears of corn” sculptures cast in aluminum.

TIM RUSSEL @avoidancepolicy is a multifaceted artist out of Madison, Wisconsin whose work creates sonic ritual states through improvisational investigation. He holds a MFA in Music Improvisation from Mills College in Oakland, California He has a vast catalog of works mostly created/performed in collaboration with movement artists bringing Tim and his music across the world from Dock 11 in Berlin to YBCA in San Francisco. As a solo artist, he was recently featured in the Modular World Wisconsin spotlight in 2024.

About the artists:

Sarah Clausen is a saxophonist, sound artist, and composer based in Chicago, IL. Using woodwinds, synthesizers, and electronics, Sarah evokes much of the unexplainable sensorial feelings and interconnectedness of the human experience through her compositions and soundscapes.

Amanda Maraist is a dancemaker and performance community advocate making performance work and arts programming in Chicago. Her work synthesizes mutualism, play, world-building, and ethnographic research into practical somatic strategies for thriving.

Kim Nucci (Chicago/Oakland) is a media artist, composer/performer, and technologist. They perform with electronics/saxophones/light, and enjoy creating temporary augmented environments and unusual instruments for performer and audience interaction. Nucci's research explores the pedestrian cybernetic body, critically examining our relationship with technology/our instruments. Their performance practice is invested in ritualism and trance states in improvisation.

Ryn Hardiman is an experimental A/V designer and performer in Chicago. They use electronic signal manipulation as a performance medium, exploring how analog and digital technology can distort, bend, and shape audio and visual signals to create electronic collages. taken in Comfort Station Logan Square by @plzsendpzza
