Thanks to everyone who joined us during the lunch hour for a special book talk with author Jessica Lawless, sponsored by the Critical Studies program!

Students, faculty, and guests gathered to hear Jessica discuss her new memoir, Cultural Capital Doesn't Pay the Rent (PM Press) - a powerful look at loss, economic survival, and three decades of organizing against the interlocking hellscapes of neoliberal capitalism.

The discussion took an intimate look at the somatic impacts of remembering and forgetting, tracing through the hope and hypocrisy of leftist activism, the academic art world, and the US labor movement.

Thank you to Jessica Lawless for sharing her work and insights with our community, and to everyone who came through to listen, connect, and join the conversation over lunch! by @pncacriticalstudies

On Friday October 2nd, the Symposium brings together theorists, curators, and interdisciplinary artists for critical conversations exploring the conditions under which computational tools operate, shift authority, and interact with established human frameworks of belief and social/political practice and the ways that algorithmic systems alter our understanding of human agency, sacred iconography, and cultural value.
Followed by the keynote lecture from Sasha Stiles at 6pm.

For more information and details about each panel visit the link in our bio or https://pnca.willamette.edu/culture/symposium. by @pncacriticalstudies

The Symposium will feature visiting artist Sasha Stiles, a first-generation Kalmyk-American poet and language artist whose work explores what it means to be human in a more-than-human world. This lecture is presented with support from the Dorothy Lemelson Foundation.

@sashastiles

Her interdisciplinary practice reimagines poetry as an ancient technology and a living computational medium, advancing poetic intelligence — the synthesis of emotion and algorithm-- as a philosophy for the generative age.

Please join us for her keynote lecture on Friday, October 2, 2026 from 6-7:30pm at PNCA. This lecture will be in person and online (live streamed via the PNCA YouTube Channel. Link will be available a few hours before the lecture begins.)

Additionally, please join us for a workshop led by Sasha Stiles on Saturday, October 3rd from 1-3pm. WHEN LANGUAGE COMES ALIVE: A LIVING POEM WITH SASHA STILES.

Fall 2027 applications are open for the MA in Critical Studies at PNCA — small seminars, dual degree options, and faculty who take your research projects seriously.

This program is for you if you’re an artist who wants theoretical frameworks for your practice, a writer who wants to publish criticism, an arts worker angling toward curatorial or leadership work, or a future PhD student building a writing sample.

Our graduates go on to curate, edit, write, teach, run programs and nonprofits, direct communications, and enter doctoral study.

Thank you to MJ Corey @kardashian_kolloquium for joining us at PNCA last Friday!

Hosted by @pncacriticalstudies, our community had the opportunity to hear from MJ Corey, a Brooklyn-based writer and psychotherapist best known for Kardashian Kolloquium @kardashian_kolloquium on TikTok and Instagram, where she applies media theory and postmodern frameworks to the Kardashian family and contemporary culture.

MJ’s culture writing has been featured in Refinery29, PAPER Magazine, Vogue, The New Yorker, and many other outlets.

It was a great opportunity for our students and community to explore the intersections of media, pop culture, theory, and criticism and to see how critical studies can provide a lens for examining the culture that surrounds us every day.

A huge thank you to MJ Corey for spending time with our community, and to @pncacriticalstudies for bringing another engaging conversation to PNCA! taken in Pacific Northwest College Of Art by @pncacriticalstudies

We are thrilled to open a call for papers for PNCA’s 2026 Symposium: Art, Aura, and the Algorithm. (Oct 1-3, 2026)

What happens to art, authorship, and presence when AI enters the creative process?

We invite proposals from artists, writers, and scholars interested in questions like:
Can AI-generated art possess aura?
What becomes of authorship, originality, and artistic presence today?
How is aura produced, performed, or gamified online?
What new forms of creativity emerge through human–machine collaboration?

FORMAT:
We are accepting proposals for individual papers (15–20 minutes). Research, creative practice, and community-based work are all welcome. Graduate & advanced undergraduate students are especially encouraged to submit. You don’t need all the answers—just a strong question to explore.

Submission should include an abstract (300 words max), bio (100 words max), and any tech or accessibility needs. Send to pncasymposium-group@willamette.edu

DEADLINE: July 15, 2026
