We are delighted to announce that Che Gossett, scholar in Black studies, queer/trans studies, and art criticism, will be joining the Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) at Willamette University, as a Scholar in Residence and Graduate Seminar Instructor in Critical Race Theory for the Fall semester of 2023. Che Gossett brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in the fields of critical race theory, queer/trans studies, and abolitionist thought, making them an exceptional addition to our multidisciplinary faculty. As a Black non-binary femme writer and critical theorist, their work has made a significant impact on the exploration and understanding of issues related to race, gender, political resistance, and abolition. While completing a Racial Justice Postdoctoral Fellowship at Columbia Law School, Che Gossett will be leading a graduate seminar in Critical Race Theory at PNCA, offering students the opportunity to engage deeply with this vital area of study. Drawing from their extensive background in aesthetics, they will challenge traditional perspectives and foster transformative discussions on the intersections of race, power, and culture. As part of their commitment to social justice education, Che Gossett has been a visiting fellow at Harvard Law School's Center for Animal Law and Policy and has received numerous fellowships and awards for their scholarship. Their work includes co-editing a special issue of TSQ titled "Trans in a Time of HIV/AIDS" and they are currently completing manuscripts on AIDS activist Kiyoshi Kuromiya and the activation of abolition in Black contemporary art for Duke University Press. Their syllabus on trans and non-binary methods for art and art history, co-authored with Professor David Getsy, received the College Art Journal Award for Distinction. @pncacriticalstudies @p_n_c_a @pnca_hallieford @cruisingatopia #criticaltheory #criticalstudies #chegossett

Faculty Profile: Dr. Steve Marotta (he/him) will be teaching Introduction to Critical Theory for @pncacriticalstudies this Fall. Steve has a PhD in Urban Studies from Portland State University and an MA in Social Justice and Human Rights from Arizona State University. His recent work has used affect theory as a window to make sense of the politics of urban transformation and craft/creative movements; this work has been published in Environment and Planning A, Cultural Geography, Planning Theory (with Austin Cummings), Journal of Cultural Economy, and the M/C Journal of Media and Culture (also with Austin Cummings). Steve’s research/writing interests gravitate toward questions about the kinds of world building that occur in what Lauren Berlant would call an impasse; the aspiration for his future work is to think through how worlds and attachments are being (re)imagined and (re)organized in the wake of the fraying promises of meritocratic racial capitalism. #criticaltheory #criticalstudies @pnca_hallieford @p_n_c_a

There is no changing the world without first apprehending it. Critical theory aims to provide a toolkit for comprehending the dominant structures of the world, how they affect us, and how they can be transformed. With these technologies of understanding, we can interrogate and act across political, ethical, cultural, and economic registers. Practically, critical theory can help us think through some of the most pressing issues of our time, including: assaults on bodily autonomy, solidarity with struggles for indigenous sovereignty, the proliferation of authoritarianism and creeping fascism, and the acceleration of climate collapse. Critical theory gives scholarly credence to the very pragmatic idea that knowledge can have a positive impact on society. #criticaltheory #criticalstudies @pncacriticalstudies @pnca_hallieford @p_n_c_a #artschool #gradschool #curator #theorist #critic #culturalworker #scholar #artswriter

“I want this book to open a conversation about how our philosophical ideas and ideals so often get tangled up with the politics that invisibly make those idea(l)s possible. In my case, I’m talking about how some of our most beloved and comforting ideas about home have a dark side.” To read more of our interview 🎙 with Dr. Taylor Eggan discussing his latest publication, "Unsettling Nature: Ecology, Phenomenology, and the Settler Colonial Imagination" (UVA Press, 2021), follow our link in bio 📚 @p_n_c_a @pnca_hallieford @pncacriticalstudies @willamette_u @uvapress #PNCA #PacificNorthwestCollegeOfArt #HallieFordSchoolOfGraduateStudies #HFSGS #GraduateSchool #CriticalStudies #UnsettlingNature #TaylorEggan #UVAPress
