🎯🔥 Amazing Sable Bull Capture Story by @thewildlifevettx

repost from @thewildlifevettx I got called out to capture this sable bull in a big pasture. Because of the size of the property and terrain, the only practical way to access him was with a helicopter.

We were dealing with trees ranging from 30 to 100 feet tall, roughly 200 feet of elevation change, gusty winds, and full foliage that gave me only small windows to see the bull.

It took us about an hour to find him. Once we did, it was on.

This guy was a tough zig-zag runner. He’d run straight, then suddenly dive toward a tree and use it for cover.

Then a thunderstorm rolled through and grounded us. We stopped and waited it out. No animal is worth risking the safety of the people involved.

Once we were back in the air, the challenge continued.

One important part of helicopter darting is the angle of impact. Ideally, I want the dart hitting at approximately 90 degrees. I can stretch that to around 100–110 degrees, but much beyond that and the dart may hit and tumble instead of sticking.

Then there’s rotor wash.

If I shoot from too far away, the airflow from the helicopter can push the dart down or occasionally even lift it. You can’t see the air moving, so a shot can look perfect when it leaves the dart gun and end up nowhere near where you expected.

Ultimately, it took some skill, some luck, and a small opening through the trees. I threaded a dart through the limbs and got it to stick.

The ground team secured the bull and transported him back to the trailer. Once he arrived, we got him out of the sling, I reversed the immobilization, and he got back on his feet.

It was a tough capture, but the bull was safe and nobody got hurt.
