POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
@slumlordmillionairefilm premieres on Friday @docnycfest. I’ve contributed footage to this film periodically over the last several years, I saw an early cut a year ago and even then, it felt like @rhymeswitheff and @ellen.martinez_ had made a defining piece on the housing crisis in NYC. It’s beautiful, smart, tragic and somehow manages to tell such a sprawling, devastating story in a comprehensive way. Everyone in NYC should see it, but also everyone should see it. by @pnickcurran

I visited Valley View Elementary School earlier this week to talk to students who have watched Federal immigration agents detain family members and fellow classmates including 5-year-old Liam Ramos.

These brave, brilliant students wanted the world to understand the impact that the past few weeks have had in their school - and in their lives.

So, they decided to write letters to the ICE agents have detained their friends and families. Here are their voices.

As always, I am beyond grateful to the incredible team at NYTimes Opinion who helped put this story together in record time, and with so much talent and grace.

And thank you to the teachers (@pegann7) and students of Valley View Elementary School for trusting us and sharing their stories.

Visit the link in my bio to learn how you can support the Columbia Heights School District as they navigate this unprecedented time.

“They thought that after they shot us down on May 4, 1970, it would bring the growing anti-war movement to its knees. But it backfired. We did bring that war to its knees. Students in America did that.”

Mainstream media gave almost daily coverage to student protests for Gaza at elite coastal universities. The focus overshadowed brutal police crackdowns on students at inland schools throughout the Rust Belt and Appalachia, where protesters were inspired by student movements going back to Kent State. @pnickcurran documented student protests at three Rust Belt schools for @100daysinappalachia and @theintercept. Flashpoint, a short documentary that explores the tenuous relationship between journalists and law enforcement at protests in the U.S., will premiere at the 2024 Independent Film Festival Boston on Saturday May 4th at 3:00p and Monday May 6th at 7:15p, at the Somerville Theater, as part of a 70-minute block of four short documentaries.

I edited the film and shot a good deal of footage between NYC, D.C and Minneapolis across 2020-2021.

I borrowed the following from Max:

Produced by the @knightinstitute, this film is a small contribution to the much larger and seemingly ever more important discussion around the role of journalism, not only within our American democracy but within societies around the globe as citizens seek the unhindered flow of truthful information, so that we can all make informed decisions.

Tickets can be found at www.iffboston.com.

This film took the unwavering effort of many talented and dedicated creatives, storytellers, journalists, researchers and scholars and is based on a tremendously well-researched and thorough report on the same topic by @joelsimonsays.

Chris Jones and I made this documentary with @theintercept and @100daysinappalachia two years ago and it’s as relevant today as it was then. When we first started talking about making it in early 2021, Chris was clear that he didn’t want to make a film about J6 but wanted to explore the powers that pushed people to participate and in this case, specifically what shaped and motivated former Parkersburg city councilor Eric Barber. And while there was a lot that we couldn’t include in a 20m film, I think we did a good job of telling that story.

Eric Barber’s deposition was included in the Jan 6 hearing in June 2022, where he said that Trump had “asked (him) to come,” the same words that open the trailer above

Earlier this year I started carrying my LCA in my camera bag and trying to grab a shot of anything that I was filming. At protests, on set, on assignment - none of these photos are particularly great, but they are a fun semi year end wrap up of whatever I had on my LCA roll, in chronological order starting in May.

1) Housing march across the Brooklyn Bridge during a spring rainstorm. With @housingjustice4all

2) WGA strike outside of 30 Rock in late May. With @perfectunion

3) NYPD stands outside of Old St. Pats Basilica prior to escorting an assortment of religious extremists several blocks in order to harass potential patients at a planned parenthood. On the first Saturday of every month, NYC for Abortion Rights holds a clinic defense in Soho, this image from June. With @nycforabortionrights

4) Inside the Rent Guidelines Board vote in June. This footage and more as part of an upcoming film.

5) @qween_jean speaks in Foley Square before the Queer Liberation March kicked off in late June.

6) ALU Reform Caucus walkout at JFK8 in Staten Island in early October. Amazon security had just told us to leave so we gave an ALU member one of our cameras just in case we got kicked out. With MPU

7) @scottheins and @tatyanacturner look over the script while shooting Tatyana’s direct to camera for @citylimitsnews. Expired film, came out real weird. Late October/early November.

8) @wolpalestine in Bay Ridge in October. Expired film.

9) @jvpny placed post it’s with the names of dead Palestinians on the walls outside the office of Rep. Jerry Nadler in Manhattan. November. Expired film.

10) CEASE FIRE NOW BIBEN IS RILLY MEAN. Near the Manhattan Bridge I think.

Not everything, but it’s something. Everything here developed at the wonderful @contactphotolabnyc in Bushwick. by @pnickcurran

For the first time, the New York City Housing Authority is asking tenants to weigh in on what funding model they want for their developments—an effort to address what officials say is $78 billion in capital repair needs across the city over the next two decades.

This City Limits video delves into the complexities of a vote that will impact NYCHA’s Nostrand Houses tenants in the near term, and explores the choices thousands of additional public housing tenants will have to make in the coming years

My favorite day of the year, the annual Nantasket beach bonfire. A few years ago my mom queried the Hull Facebook group on its origins and no one could seem to agree how it started. Some said homecoming victory celebration, others said burning refuse from the blizzard of ‘78. As far as I know it’s been happening forever and it’s super witchy and v New England and I love it. #nantasketbeach #bonfire by @pnickcurran
