prayer.
a memorial for d’angelo🕯️

in a few weeks it will be one year since my favorite artist transitioned. still, I don’t have the words for how much this man’s vulnerability and command of the human experience has meant to me. if there’s anything I’ve learned in this past year it’s that grief is a terrible, confusing, isolating thing. join me on the first anniversary of his passing so we can share in that grief together, and maybe we’ll find the words - or the groans, the tears, the smiles, the laughter - together.

I’ll be spinning D all night and screening some rare footage of his interviews and performances. Got a few more things in store. Bring a lover of good music with you. Pull up with a record if you have one.

see you soon 🫂 by @pocketdweller_

My love for D runs DEEP. Anybody who knows me knows how much I love D’Angelo. Getting the news, after an already rough two months, permanently shifted the axis of my planet. I immediately put on ‘The Root’ , ‘Prayer’ , ‘Send It On’ , ‘Africa’ - I sat, and I cried. For the past five years his discography has had a song for every chapter of my life and I would’ve never imagined playing a song for him, in this way, so soon.

Since January I’ve been working on the launch of @perfectmemoryradio. My show, ‘Chicken Grease,’ is a love letter to D’Angelo and the words and sounds that made him. My biggest hope was that one day he’d listen. My quiet dream was that one day he’d come on. While that dream won’t come true, I trust my hope will.

I invite y’all to come share some space with me tomorrow for the launch of Perfect Memory. We’ll spend the afternoon honoring someone who feels so close to me, sending him well wishes and a smooth journey on his return back home🕯️

Like the rain to the dirt
From the vine to the wine
From the Alpha creation
To the end of time ***

In his passing, I’ve learned that D was known to be a great selector and even had his own radio show ‘Feverish Fantazmagoria’. Definitely give it a listen, it’s beautiful to hear his voice.

One Mo’Gin,

Chicken Grease is back for Episode 002 - “That Ol’ Bucket of Crisco”! This episode is fueled by passion, anger, and determination and is the perfect backdrop for that holiday preparation you have coming up. Join me TONIGHT from 7-10PM EST as we dive into themes of Black revolution, pleasure, and politics through the genres of rock and funk and, as always, celebrate the one and only D’Angelo🖤
We don’t funk till after dark - see y’all there🪔
