It’s the first of August✨🪬 which means it is a time of reclaiming & celebrating what was thought to be lost or erased. Reclaiming & celebrating ourselves, our ancestors, our past, our present & future. See, for so long it’s been said that we, as a diaspora, all share the same lineage & that any mixture outside of European + Indigenous comes from somewhere else, *never* here.

It’s still an ongoing learning/unlearning/relearning process, & it starts with reflection; listening to family members, looking through family photos, reading up on history, recounting your lived experiences & sharing these experiences with others who relate.

August signifies “el Mes de la afrodescendencia” (Black History Month) in El Salvador 💙 August became the chosen month due to its inspiration from Black American freedom fighters & resistance against racial oppression. Nicaragua & Costa Rica also celebrate el Mes de la afrodescendencia this month 💙

There’s a lot more to express & share, & this is just day 1 that I hope to share more throughout this month. El Salvador is small, but it also has its own Black history, legacies & people. We just have to take a closer look, keep an open mind & unlearn what’s been said, for generations. 🌀🔵🔹👑✨🫶🏽

These are urgent times so of course we need to keep our awareness & actions on immediate relief, but these times are also calling for sustainability as much as possible in those responses. So whether we’re talking about the soil or soul, let’s nourish both 🫶🏽🌱💫

Spend some time in Lenca territories, where my family is from 💙🤍💙 Also where according to the Lenca creation narrative, the Creator used corn, chocolate, & star dust to make humans✨🥹🪶👣 Definitely some strong Afro/Afro-Indigenous/Indigenous legacies that have been ingrained into the local culture & noticeable in the people & our families ❤️ Las caras más bonitas que he conocido 🫶🏽➿🪬

P.S. Photos never do Central America justice. You’ve got to experience it for yourself to understand why we’re so deeply rooted in this little isthmus & want to preserve + protect it. We want it to be a safe place for all peoples & living creatures❣️

You don’t know it yet… but someday in the future, THIS is what you’re going to miss the most. Not just the colors… but how they made you feel 🥹

A weekend getaway was needed. (The only time I take my glasses off in photos is due to annoying glares, lol) 🤓🌿🌞

I feel at ease for the first time in a long time on my birthday. A sense of relief. More inspired than ever! 🫶🏽

My heart has accepted everything that has occurred in my 31st year (a lot of personal changes). I feel good, excited & hopeful💫

What a privilege to celebrate another year with loved ones. I don’t ever take it for granted. I wish this for everyone.

I’m blessed through love, mental clarity, creativity, family, friendships & most importantly health. ברוך השם. Get enough sleep, get your body moving, drink plenty of water, balance meals, do activities that make you happy. All things fall into place ⚖️🍂😉

Happy 32nd birthday to me🌹 & to all my fellow September babies (there’s a lot of us lol) + Libras 💙♎️⚖️🧿💕

Today, July 25th, is International Day of Afro-Latinas, Afro-Caribbean & African Diaspora 💙shoutout to all of my Black & Afrodescendant Salvadoreñas in the diaspora 💙 despite still not being recognized in Salvadoran society, we know who you are & your existence + experiences are valid 🌹 Afro-Salvadoreñas have existed since the inception of what’s currently known as El Salvador. Don’t let these racist, classist & uneducated people tell you otherwise.

This collage & drawing (Afro-Lenca) are my personal ode to existence & legacy. 🎨

Did you know that on July 25, 1992, Black women from 32 countries in Latin America & the Caribbean met in the Dominican Republic to make visible the struggles & resistance of Black women & define strategies of political incidence to confron racism from a gender perspective. As a result of that meeting, 7/25 was instituted as International Day of Afro-descendant Women, also known as Afro-Latina, Afro-Caribbean & Diaspora Women’s Day.

The longest day & the shortest night is upon us!
Happy Summer Solstice, everyone🌟✨🌞✨🌟

Since I was a kid, I’ve loved the transitions of seasons & weather. To know that I’m part of this tiny part of a larger world that connects me to my faith & soul. Being able to experience these changes is a blessing in many ways. The sun kissing my skin feels like a hug from my ancestors & HaShem. ✨🌞✨

Our resilience, fight, love, justice & liberation will continue to shine through this summer✨☀️🌟

I’m deeply rooted 🌱🌎🤎
I love being the color of earth. It tells the story of my ancestors/family & the footprints they’ve left behind 👣

Uniquely this year, the first night of Passover occurs on Earth Day. Both occasions celebrate liberation & renewal, echoing the message of Mother Earth & miracles🌿✨

Wishing you a reflective & meaningful
Passover & Earth Day 🫂🌱🌎☮️

It’s been a month since I had to say goodbye to my fur baby, Krisi, & it still hard to accept that she’s gone 💔 Every time I step outside to my backyard, it’s so quiet & seeing her missing bed is enough to get tears out of me, again.

Our fur babies always bring so much love & joy in our lives & home, & it’s so hard to say goodbye when the time comes. But I’m so thankful that we have had lots of lovable memories & thankful that my fur babies helped make this place a home. Now they’re both gone but I’d like to think they’re finally reunited & playing together again ❤️‍🩹

Until we meet again, my fur babies, I love you ❤️🐾🌈🐶🐶❤️‍🩹

Today, is mine🎂🍂🥰
30 had me feeling at my most beautiful & creative. Lots of laughs, reconnecting with friendships, relaxing in my own space, enjoying quiet sceneries, & now contemplating what new goals & adventures I wanna accomplish in this decade 💭

30 was amazing! 💖
Don’t listen to the naysayers—life doesn’t go downhill after 30. Entering your 30s does not make you “old.” It’s okay to not have everything figured out just yet. It’s okay to enjoy your freedom & try something new. There’s so much pressure & expectations placed on women as we age, & I vowed to myself to never give in to it & instead figure out my own path, all in divine timing.

Life can be so exhausting & unexpected, & if these past couple of years have taught us anything is that health is wealth✨ immensely thankful to turn a healthy 31 today 🙏🏽

Here’s to another fabulous year of loving this life, myself, my families, my communities, my faith, my friendships & this earth ✨🥂✨💙🥰🧿🪬🫶🏽

Believe it or not, even in 2023, it’s hard to find Salvadoran artworks featuring brown/Afro-Salvadoran colochas (curly hair) being featured ☹️ but that’s why I’m so grateful for the amazing work that Afro-Salvadoran artists: @carloslara_dibujo & @breenache are doing to bring visibility in the art world. 💙

Inspired by recent Barbie posts from @smugmorenita @baggioardon.design, here’s my take, featuring a Afro-Salvadoreña colocha Barbie front & center 🥰🐠🧜🏽‍♀️ also inspired by the mermaid Barbies I used to own. And after watching the Barbie movie, I thought it would be fun to put my own twist on it. 🧜🏽‍♀️

I don’t have a name for this Barbie, but all I know is that her fish friend was inspired by my hometown, San Pedro, & she’s captivated by a flor de izote growing underwater 🌊🥹

It’s far from perfect, but here’s to more fun summer sketches & more Afro-Salvadoran artworks. 🎨💙🫶🏽🌀🌊

August is the start of Afrodescendant/Black history month in El Salvador 🦋💚

Despite what the naysayers may say that, “no Afrodescendants exists in El Salvador”; history, cultural legacies & phenotypes say otherwise. The most common excuses I grew up hearing for why El Sal has no Afro population is that, geographically the country has no connection to the Caribbean coast, therefore slavery did not enter in the country lol, please 🙄. Another one, is that in 1933, General Hernández Martinez wanted to follow Adolf Hitler’s example to whiten the population, & wrote a law called the Immigration Limitations. This law prohibited the entry of Black, Asian, Romani & Arab people from entering the country. Another one I often hear is that the few Black population that did exist back then, eventually intermixed with the general mestizo population. Therefore, we don’t have “visible” Black people in El Sal.

All of these were some common “explanations” I would receive whenever I would question Salvadoran culture & people—especially when I would look at my family. In order to understand Afrodescendant/Black history in El Sal, you have to learn the history of the country & why Afro-Salvadorans may appear different from neighboring countries. Let’s remember that El Sal is NOT a monolith.

To this day, Afrodescendant/Black Salvadorans are still not recognized within Salvadoran society, laws, censuses & the diaspora. And yet, people will call or give you silly nicknames like, “moreno/a”, “negro/a”, “trigueño/a”, “mulatto/a”, etc. solely based on one’s phenotype.

I want all people—especially chele, mestizx, Indigenous Salvis—to know that all Latin American countries have Afrodescendant people. Every. Single. One. El Salvador has never been the exception. I want y’all to understand this. There’s much more I can continue to say but I’ll leave it like this for now.

With that I say: Feliz Mes de la Afrodescendencia Salvadoreña! 💙🌿🦋
