That time when Poets of Babel’s celebrated its 1st year anniversary at the Jerusalem Cinémathèque 🎬 🎤

There was a screening of YES, a film whose script was entirely in iambic pentameter, a poetry reading, live jazz, and an open mic. Today 11 years ago there was an article about it in Haaretz ✨

Who could have imagined, Poets of Babel would live on, 12 years strong? 🙏🏽

Here is the text from the article:
מה זה “משוררי בבל”?
“מועדון שירה שכולל את כל השפות. רציתי מועדון שירה, מקום שאני אוכל לחלוק שירה שלי ולשמוע שירה של אחרים. אני גרה בירושלים, ופשוט התחלתי להזמין חברים לבוא אלי הביתה להקריא שירה. הרצון היה לחלוק שירה אבל לא להגביל, ולעשות את זה רק בעברית או באנגלית. זה סוג של הגבלה. ההשראה הגיעה מאנטואן קסר, משורר מלטזי שכתב שיר שנקרא ‘מרחבא’, שמשלב 70 שפות”.

איך מסתדרים עם פער השפה?
“יש ‘לינגואה פרנקה’ ‏(שפת גישור שאינה שפת אם‏) - אנגלית או עברית הן שפות השיח. מבחינת השירה עצמה, אני לא באמת חושבת שאפשר לתרגם שירה. אפילו אם זו שפת אם אפשר לפספס הרבה דברים, כל מיני הקשרים מאוד מסוימים. אז לא מתרגמים אבל מסבירים את השירה ואת הסיפור מאחוריה. פשוט נהנים מהשפה, קודם כל”.

מה האידיאולוגיה מאחורי המועדון?
“יש מושג שנקרא cultural mosaic - פסיפס תרבותי, במקום המושג של כור היתוך. לקחת את הקולאז’ הזה, לא זהות אחידה והומוגנית, ולחגוג את זה. אני די ישראלית, גרה פה 13 שנה. אבל אני באה עם קצת אמריקאיוּת, החברים שלי מדברים רוסית. כל אחד שגר פה יש לו שורשים במקום אחר. זה לא בקטע של תרגום ואסימילציה, אלא רב תרבותיות”.

מה התוכניות לעתיד?
“חגגנו עכשיו שנה בסינמטק ירושלים עם פיילוט של הקראת שירה, ויהיה עוד ערב ב–24.6. אני חושבת שזה יהיה ממש מגניב אם המועדון יתגלגל לכיוון של כתב עת ספרותי. החלום הגדול הוא שיהיו סניפים של משוררי בבל בכל העולם”.

Poets of Babel in the Sukkah
משוררי בבל בסוכה

The sukkah, the temple of impermanence, that is all of us actually — “you are your own sukkah,” “letting in starlight and god;”

(What are you letting in?
“The letting in is the letting in”);

the Tower of Babel, not confusion but a gateway to god — we too are the gate, our very own Báb;

we are “embraced by infinity” and “held by velocity,” on the threshold, breathing poems
in a space where the soul can relax,
in a space that holds us all.

Poets of Babel is always good

Immense grateful for the humans who create Poets of Babel with their presence; for the ones who return every year and the new; for the poetry and the beautiful conversations; for the inspiration, the connections, and love; for the קשר ישיר and gems dropped; for the gates and portals, the sukkah like a Tower of Babel — we are not scattered but gathered here

July 2, 2026 at 19:00, we’ll have our first ever Poets of Babel Haifa (!!!) hosted by OG Poet of Babel, Noa! Noa has been a Poet of Babel since its very early days, its inception in Jerusalem in 2012 🙌🏽 and participated for many years until she moved out of town 💫

This is an exciting milestone in PoB history. Poets have been known to come from the north to Jerusalem to join us, some reading poetry with us for their very first time. All of you northern Poets of Babel come through now that we’re in town 🤭 taken in Jerusalem, Israel by @poetsofbabel

The languages we’ve forgotten; the violence we’d prepared ourselves for that never came; what we put up with for your presence, the toll we pay — remembering, before the world switched.

We spoke of infinite eyes. How Geula (redemption) will come when [we] focus more on the people than the ruins (and she was with us!). That home is always on the move, like breathing. Of the electric beauty of the atom, its great brilliance, the velocity of joy.

We had conversations with the heart and with the journeying birds. How grief makes one cling to strange things in life and joy can reside alongside it. Heard the 72 names of god and how they might be New Year resolutions. Remembered, “you are your own baby.”

“I’m trying to find my way, so I must look everywhere./ Hoopoe: When you feel empty, you have to open up your heart and let the wind sweep through it.”

For Poets of Babel, the way is in the words, poetry is the wind sweeping through our hearts.
How good it is that even for those who now reside in foreign lands, Poets of Babel is a landing 🪽✍🏽💫
