APART is an extraordinary short film directed by Pola Manelli and written by Spike Lee, Tim Jones, Jeff Leisawitz and Lubabalo Mtati. Black Coffee created the incredible sound and music score.

(INTERVIEW COMING MONDAY!)

“APART reminds us that empathy and love without prejudice still exists if we allow our adult selves to look through the eyes of our inner child. Just like Themba and Joel, we learn that humanity is beautifully interwoven regardless of color.”

🎨 THE ART OF APART: PROPS

Every week, we’re sharing a glimpse of the craft and human hands behind APART. This time, it’s all about the props.

From cars to teacups, posters to proteas: even the smallest things were designed with care, because authenticity lives in the littlest details.

Early visual explorations for @apartanimatedshort I tried to think about character design as little as possible and just focus on what style would be best suited to tell the story we wanted to tell. by @polamaneli

APART digs into the history of apartheid at a moment when that story matters more than ever. It was always intended to be more than a short film. It’s a conversation starter, and a classroom tool.

Some very early visual exploration for APART through the character Themba.

I did these while I had some down time before everything began to really kick off. The idea was to throw as many ideas at the wall as possible, with very little regard for applicability to our animation pipeline. I was given license to just explore, find an approach I liked, and that we would later find a way to retain the essence of it while making it practical for our timeline. And to my delight we managed to do just that.
