POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Recently my nail journey came with @_by_boon came to an end. It was such a rich, intimate, creative space to be in. My friends know that I have an incurable soft spot for protecting Black boyhood (as seen in the last slide). The song in this post is a part of my "Ballads for Black Boys" playlist I made. A collection of songs written by Black men for other Black men. @mustafathepoet music is a balm.

The set was inspired by a sketch by @polamaneli.

This year the intention has been to celebrate African artists with my nails. I couldn'tthink of a better way to start than with a set inspured by the phenomenal @polamaneli. Pola is a South African illustrator with a distinct visual style and keen social commentary. I was introduced to his work through @mixo_mm. Back then I'd pore over his tumblr pages. I was overjoyed in 2020 when I bought an A2 print of his which I am ashamed to say has not yet been put up. For now the nails will have to do 😅

These particular nails were inspired by his Benjamin Button Cafe series. Around this time Pola was particularly interested in tiles prints and they featured heavily in his work.

This was a little bit of a challenge for @nails_by_boon but I have not yet found something she can't translate into nail art. I'm super grateful to have such a skillful nail tech who is less service provider and more co-conspirator.

Until next time 💛

Posted @withregram • @polamaneli 🔥🎭✨ ‘breakthrough’ for @newyorkermag accompanying a review of ‘A Fire Shut Up In My Bones’, @terence_blanchard new opera at the Met adapted from the @charlesmblow memoir. i tried to think about what it means to have a fire shut up in ones bones, and to me it evokes a sense of an overwhelming rage with no catharsis in sight, and perhaps resorting to internalizing it instead. bring choked up with anger and crying in the middle of an argument? a matchstick struck in your childhood, becomes an engulfing flame in adulthood..? my endless gratitude to @zsigmonda for being able to art direct all of that into something legible

So
I did this etching of a Jesus Christ onto a piece of plexiglass covering the frame of a piece by Pola Maneli.

Pola’s piece is called “Thuma Mina”, an illustration of falling mineworkers in a void, a critique of Ramaphosa’s involvement in the Marikana Massacre and how he was brazen enough to pursue office after a catastrophe like that.

The depiction of Jesus for me tries to articulate power, sanctified and hegemonic power, intoxicating and omnipotent power. Particularly a white Jesus, such that it can pull in western imperialism and the history of colonisation in Africa. A power so profound in can unmake you and unmake me.

There is an order to this chaos, a despicable and dehumanising logic to it all.

The source material for the etching came from a piece by Antonello Da Messina.

More to come. Give me money. Plexiglass is expensive. Imagine this at scale!

Martín Luther King Jr Day celebrates the birth of Martin Luther King Jr born in January 15th but celebrated on the 3rd Monday in January. The holiday became official in 1983 when Ronald Reagan signed it into law to honor Mr King’s work in the civil rights movement. In doing some research this morning (BBC, Washington Post) I learned that Stevie Wonder’s Happy Birthday song was written in honor of Martin Luther King. For many years he worked alongside Coretta Scott King to make her husbands birthday a National holiday. In an interview with @andersoncooper he is cited as saying “I said to her….’I imagined in this dream I was doing this song. We were marching with petition signs to make Dr. King’s birthday a national holiday.’” Happy Birthday is featured on the HOTTER THAN JULY album from 1980, in 1981 he dedicated his tour to making Martin Luther King Day a reality. 40 years ago today 🇺🇸💙 illustration by @polamaneli a South African based illustrator. #martinlutherking #thenewyorker #martinlutherkingday
