#ICYMI, we were represented by our National Coordinator Nassanga Margaret, at the 3rd High-Level Dialogue on Green Economy, Sustainability & SDGs yesterday @UNICEFUganda .

She was part of a panel discussion where she deliberated on how Government of Uganda , financial institutions, development partners can integrate youth wellbeing and alcohol harm prevention in the green economy.

This caused an effect that Resolution no.6 of the event is on alcohol harm and other substances prevention

Alcohol consumption hampers full realization of all projects- govt and private for all sectors.

Though most CEO's look at cash inflow activities, alcohol- related harm prevention is a retainer activity, they save on the exorbitant costs of treatment, absenteeism and presenteeism from the workforce with Alcohol Use Disorders. taken in Kampala, Uganda by @policyuganda

Earlier this morning, we held a press conference at Kolping Hotel in Kampala, informing the masses about the upcoming 5th Uganda Alcohol Policy Conference, slated for the 25th and 26th of November 2026 @Makerere School of Public Health Auditorium.

Uganda is ranked 1st in Africa and 5th globally as the highest alcohol consumption in Africa, averaging about 12.2 litres of pure alcohol per person per year, which is nearly double the African regional average.

Alcohol has contributed to many of the mental health challenges contributing 20% of admissions in Butabika National Referral Hospital and strain units across regional hospitals like, Gulu, Lira and Kabale.
Alcohol abuse is costing Uganda trillions of shillings in healthcare costs and lost productivity and social and community devastation. (@WHO , 2023)

Recognizing the severity of these public health and economic crises, we (UAPA), through the 5th Uganda Alcohol Policy Conference (#UAPC26), seeks to advance policy dialogue and collaborative action on alcohol control, bringing together stakeholders to examine existing challenges and identify practical approaches to reducing alcohol-related harm.

Professionals, academia , religious & cultural leaders, hospitals and organizations are encouraged to take part, contribute their expertise, share practical experiences, and help shape solutions that strengthen healthier and safer communities. taken in Kampala, Uganda by @policyuganda

During a courtesy visit to the office of Isingiro District LC5 Chairperson Hon. Alone Turahi, the UAPA Secretariat discussed the need for stronger action against alcohol-related harm including the urgent need to have an alcohol ordinance for Isingiro district and by laws regulating availability, accesibility, advertsment and affordability of alcohol.

“There are many deaths fueled by alcohol in the district. It is one of the things that hinders development. I promise to support the fight,” he said. taken in Kampala, Uganda by @policyuganda
