The sprawling mansions of Naatukotai Chettiars are located in the towns of Karaikudi, Athangudi and Kanadukathan, in the Chettinad region of central Tamil Nadu. There are a few in the nondescript villages and towns of the region, as well.
. Barring Karaikudi, not many amenities are available in the other villages. Therefore, opt for Karaikudi as your base, if you want to tour these mansions.
.
An hour and half drive from Madurai, Karaikudi is also famous for its temples, antique stores and cuisine. And, it was wonderful and nostalgic to be back to my maternal grandfather’s native place ❤️🧿👣 during our recent road trip from Trivandrum to Chennai ✨
.
You may also want to visit the Pillayarpatti temple, which has a rock-cut bas relief of Ganesha. More on Chettinad and the temple on my blog. Link in the bio.

A peek into the weeklong Independence Day celebrations in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
Started off with the Indian Airforce Band Concert… beautifully done.
.
The Resurge event- an initiative of Kerala govt’s Women & Child Development deptt. was a hit with the women folk, who flocked in hundreds onto the stretch, that was declared traffic free from 9:30pm on 14th August to 1:00am on 15th August !
Messy… and clueless. Supposedly was a women-only event. Turned out to be open to all ! Purpose lost.
