On #WorldWildlife Day, we celebrate one of TamilNadu’s most spectacular, biodiverse rich forest reserves - the Anamalais!

A treasure house of biodiversity, the Anamalai’s region of the Western Ghats is home to a spectacular array of wild species, some rare and endemic, that are found nowhere else on Earth.

“Elephants Hills” as it is literally translated, the region is one of the most picturesque landscapes in the country that hosts a broad variety of ecosystems ranging from tropical wet evergreen forests to sholas and montane grasslands to dry, scrub jungles.

This short film celebrates the striking landscapes and iconic species of the Anamalais - a significant ecological tract that is a crowning glory in TamilNadu’s biodiverse rich forest reserves.

When we made 'Kadar', we were granted the grace of walking the jungle with loganathan. Every foot set forward, every forethought, every introspection and after thought was guided by the voices of his elders who walked the forest before him. Loganathan showed us a forest where man and elephant were inhabitants - none was above the other.

3 years have passed and we find ourselves in another wild haven, walking the jungle with Mani and his elephant, Kaleem.

Living in the way they do, always close beside one another, where each moment presents an opportunity for one to over power the other, to assert and impose, where both might and tact are equal forces, none chooses to test the balance. They carry on walking their familiar paths, pressing tracks in the mud like they always have. Mani showed us that in the top slip elephant camp, man and elephant aren't inhabitants of the forest, they are housemates.

'I call him my brother. He is the reason I have a roof over my head. A place to call 'home'. Our houses are small, but here, an elephant lives - in the stories we speak, in the dreams we dream, in knowing, what it means to be a Malasar.'

Caught between Two Worlds - a lion-tailed macaque observing its reflection in a mirror!

What was once a truly arboreal primate, is now accustomed to humans and move along the grounds of the highly degraded rainforest patches of Puthuthottam in Valparai.

They enter labor lines, jump into the tiled-roof houses, they climb on cars and bikes that are stationary, all while looking for food - instead of foraging on the high canopy among the thick, dense rainforests, they’re now on the ground, among us, because we cut the trees, laid roads, planted coffee, built concrete structures — simply put, we altered their home, and their behaviour!

What used to be a truly arboreal, extremely shy monkey, is now not afraid to get close to, and live among human presence. And while doing so, they also get their hands on stuff that doesn’t belong to their natural world - plastic of various kinds, food and snack items that they’re not meant to eat, I’ve even observed a macaque getting hold of a ant-acid strip, containers storing harmful chemicals, almost anything they can get their hands on as they look for something to munch, chew and bite on.

On this case occasion, it was much less harmful, a rear-view mirror of a car! This individual got hold of a car’s rear view mirror somehow and became super curious upon seeing his own reflection. He was super fascinated about this new-found object, the look on his face, was it curiosity, awe or confusion – I couldn’t really understand. I couldn’t admire their intelligence and playfulness but only feel sorry for the poor macaque trying to figure out and make sense of the strange elements in his new world that he’s been reduced to!

He took it away from the troop, sat and looked at the mirror in a transfixed gaze! Soon, before he could make sense of his reflection, the alpha male called out and it was time for them to keep moving! He responded to the call, threw the mirror down, and re-joined his troop. 1/2

Here’s a short story on Padayappa, the gentle giant of Munnar. There are heartwarming stories and small instances of coexistence, that often go unnoticed and untold. It is the negative interactions that often make it to the headlines and news reports.

But if you walk in the field and follow the trails that are less taken, the ground reality will tell you a different story. The kind of stories like this when the giant and the gentiles coexisted all night in a small colony with no conflict or combat. He came there looking for jackfruits and the people all stayed safe inside the house, knowing he’s around just for food and not to harm.

And the next day, we were there to revisit his tracks and listen to warm nuggets of people, recalling the night, they spent with the gentle giant. Stories, they told me with bewildered eyes and excited voices. It’s like they got to be with the superstar, the icon of these hills in such close quarters. I wish I get to spend more time with him too in the coming days.

Leopard Siesta! A leopard enjoying a mid-day nap among the rocky outcrops in the Anamalais Hills, camouflaged among the dry grass. A flock of Great Hornbills taking flight on a late monsoon evening as they head towards their roosting site for the night! A very late sunset filled the air in hues of purple as the mist-covered valley cleared up just in time for me to film the flight! Pockets like these are crucial for the sustenance of Hornbill populations in the region, as they congregate, feed together, find mates before they disperse far and wide for the nesting season, across the Anamalai Hills.
