Assassin bug doing HER thing!
I’m trying not to use “it” when describing non-human life forms now. @robinwallkimmerer gave a talk about how describing other creatures as “it” makes it so much easier to categorize them as being unimportant or not as extraordinarily important as human beings. When we refer to our fellow life forms that way it creates a false hierarchy that places human beings at the top and all others (including plants) at the bottom, therefore absolving us of responsibility or respect for their lives. It works the same way as any other hierarchical structure that is built around a false narrative, placing certain individuals above others therefore giving the ones at the top permission to mistreat, subjugate, and oppress all the others. I think we can all fight this, even it begins with something as simple as our language choices. by @pollinatorlove

This may not look like much but this lil beauty is a California Snowdrop Bush and they are notoriously difficult to grow in suburban settings. I planted this lovely one 8 years ago after I found it at @calfloranursery in Sonoma County. I AM SO EXCITED! It is about to bloom for the first time! I love gardening. by @pollinatorlove

This was my last bouquet of 2025, harvested at the beginning of November. The future is unknowable but it’s worth fighting for, that much I know. Yes, the pace of horrible news is relentless, but that means we must be relentless as well. You know what else is relentless? The seasons, the plants, the flowers, the cycle of life and beauty. Stand strong amidst the storm, we will see the other side. If we want joy, if we want the freedom to enjoy it, we will need to show up in all the ways we can - for each other - for the future. by @pollinatorlove

Native annual flower Madia elegans with native bee. Maybe my friends at @bohartmuseum or @the_bees_in_your_backyard can help me identify this little beauty?

This time of year we see all kinds of beautiful native pollinators come through our garden. The joy I get from seeing these creatures in the garden we worked hard to create is the kind of feeling that keeps me going through hard times.

On another note, I fell in love with nature when I was a kid and a big part of that came from public media programs like @pbsnature . There are people in our government who want to take away funding from programs like this.
There are some folks who have been saying they want to make America “great” again but my question has always been: for whom? Who are they making America great again for? Not people like me and you. Nope. And if you’re feeling this way too, please consider speaking out, please consider calling your reps in government. And a huge thank you to everyone who continues to show up and fight the good fight, you are not alone. Every single thing you do makes a huge difference, believe me.

And if you want to grow Madia elegans yourself it’s easy! Seeds are available from seed companies like @larnerseeds - planting in the fall is ideal, just before the rains. They smell amazing, I describe the scent as a combination between cucumber and pineapple. It’s like nothing else! taken in Davis, California by @pollinatorlove

Coco Gold Marigolds. A stunning explosion of color and shape. And I’ve noticed that they are very popular with the assassin bugs who like to hunt on these show stoppers. by @pollinatorlove
