The Hyundai Pony wasn’t just a car; it was a symbol of South Korea’s ambitions on wheels. In 1983, Hyundai—whose name fittingly means “modern” in Korean—took a bold leap by exporting this compact, budget-friendly vehicle to Canada, making it the first Korean car to conquer North American roads. The Pony, with its boxy charm and unbeatable price, quickly won over Canadian drivers, who appreciated its practicality.

For South Korea, the Pony’s success was a moment of national pride—a small but mighty car proving that Korean craftsmanship could compete on the global stage. It wasn’t just about selling cars; it was about showing the world that South Korea was ready to play in the big leagues. It's a familiar question for many Korean Montrealers: where can you find the best Korean food in the city? Often, the answer points outside Quebec.

Hanhak Kim, Joon Pyo Chun, and Jin Pyo Chun, the minds behind spots like @pony.bbq and @ile.jeju.royalmount, notice this too. They've watched Korean culture grow here, but the restaurant scene remains limited.

Hanhak (@ottomtl) points out that most Korean restaurants in Montreal have similar menus. Joon Pyo saw a pattern: everyone opened the same kind of place.
The city needs more specialized Korean menus, but that requires a larger population to support them.
