We’re pretty chill but, like any project, business, org., or club interested in continuing to produce a lot with a little, efficiency is paramount and so is the perpetuation of good feelings. And it doesn’t make us feel good to receive submissions that are so obviously intended to denigrate a particular group of people, obviously written by A.I., or have clearly not considered in any meaningful way whether or not the publication is even a good fit. You wouldn’t go to store that only sells brown clothes to buy something green, so don’t submit work to us that is patently bigoted, that sensationalizes hate, or, through your covert use of A.I., forces us unwittingly and non-consensually to engage with work produced by plagiarizing technology (and yes, ‘brainstorming’ counts!).

And call us old fashioned, but you need also to take just a small moment to accurately address the appropriate editor when submitting. ‘Dear Editors’ only works when there are several editors listed for each genre. At our humble publication, there are just three of us—@kevinrmaloney reading fiction, @brianstephenellis reading poetry, and @ryanashleyanderson reading everything else—and we get so many submissions that we just don’t have time to read the ones that are addressed generically. Because, if you didn’t take the time to find our names, chances are, you didn’t take time to learn anything else out about us, either. And how can you decide we’re a fit without doing that first?

So, for your ease and our sanity, we’ve created these handy reminders. Can’t wait to read your fine work and deeply appreciate your trust.

Have questions? This announcement post is long overdue!!! The family is growing and we are thrilled to share that Mahalea Whitehead / @oggaylordtm has joined the pool party as our Associate Nonfiction Editor and Grants Writer to help with some of our 2027 goals 👇
• Secure grants so we can pay all our contributors and readers (even if just small stipends).
• Increase nonfiction submissions, especially CNF, culture writing, and reviews/interviews.
• Stabilize/streamline the anthology publication process and timeline (yes, the anthology is still on schedule to release this year)!

ABOUT MAHALEA

Mahalea Whitehead (he/him) is a writer, artist, chef, and lover of all things critical. Raised in the Midwest on a diet of broken American dreams, he most admires art that lines the cracks between identity, culture, and social stratification. His personal library contains the likes of writers such as Johanna Hedva, Saidiya Hartman, Leo Herrera, and Ryuko Kubota. He has a dual Bachelor’s in Applied Linguistics and Social Sciences from Portland State University, and his current work focuses on consumption, desire, legibility, and the alt queer experience in a fractured world. Find him burying hands in clay at a ceramics studio, cooking for friends at home, enjoying a club darkroom in Berlin, or editing in a coffee shop in the Pacific Northwest
•
Please welcome Mahalea and start sending him pitches and subs at nonfiction@poolpartymag.com! (CNF and essays can be submitted per our submission guidelines, but reviews and interviews should first be pitched).

Every once in a while, we receive a piece that cracks us open: as people, as artists, and, this time, also as web developers concerned with accessibility.

Erasure really makes you pause. It removes distraction and affectively transmits palpable emotion. The placement of elements matters. What’s erased is as meaningful as what is exposed.

To that end, it was important that we honored @emmdubb16’s vision. We’d need to upload static image files of the poems in order to preserve the format, but doing so would make the text inaccessible to screen readers. This created a cool opportunity to think about the translation of visual written work like this into readable, digital files. So we talked a lot and did some things to create accessible alternatives. Hopefully, we’ve produced a good experience for all!

Nothing sounds more exhausting that having to come to an agreement with strangers about the politics of tourism (even when it involves history and archives and stuff), and nothing sounds more wonderful than being totally cut off from digital connection, being forced to rely on the gut alone for information.

What does it mean when the information available on the internet and ‘reputable’ news sources is as biased as the memories, beliefs, and ‘knowledge’ of fellow travelers? How does one ever get at the truth or come to consensus.

“Pyramiden” by @jacjemc provokes more questions than it provides answers, and that’s just the way we like it. LiNkInBiO.

If you’ve ever wanted to roast me, sorry but I’m beating you to it. Come out to @aaltolounge tonight at 6p for a @poolpartymag pop-up featuring a fab convo between @mattknuts and @danielscsutter (with short readings by both!) and readings by each of the Pool Party editors: @brianstephenellis, @kevinrmaloney, and moi.

I’ll be reading about my brief stint as a Christian home shopping show host and I’d love to make fun of myself with you. Be there. This is a one-time opportunity.

After reading “Worse,” I was reminded of the time I got fired after performing Rebel Yell during a hemp conference karaoke afterparty. There may have been gyrations, there may have been alcohol, there definitely was me, an ‘inappropriate’ woman, on stage, singing about …. desire? About not being small?

This also got me thinking about the choices creatives are making to avoid being confused with A.I., choosing to make dirty, messy, imperfect art and music and writing, as a way of resisting the machine.

“Worse,” by @janebelinduh, feels like a battle cry against polish, propriety, and politeness (yes, I came up with that alliterative, three-item list all with my own, human brain), and we think you should read it 🔥

📣BABY’S FIRST BOOK 📣
This is a huge day for us! The first pre-order link is live for Pool Party’s first author book ever, @mattknuts’ debut story collection, SO FAR BEHIND I THOUGHT I WAS FIRST.

Pub day is Dec. 10, just in time for the holidays, and the FIRST 100 folks to pre-order get all the perks we’re offering re drop-shipping + gift-wrapping + gift notes PLUS some very cool
limited-edition swag! We want to keep the swag a mystery so mail day is all that more exciting, but we promise it’s cool stuff: all analog, U.S.-sourced, and handmade.

Click the 🔗 to learn all about the book and pre-order today!

[ Note : We are so grateful to @mark_kerckhoff for licensing his beautiful landscape painting for use in the cover design!! Please check out his work at kerckhoffpaintings.com ]

BUT WHY PRE-ORDER?
Pre-order sales are so helpful for so many reasons:

1] If our pre-order #’s are high, it will help instill confidence in the booksellers we will be reaching out to about stocking the book. That means more book stores will stock the book (more money for the author and more money for Pool Party to do more publishing!)
2] After setting aside author royalties, the up-front presale funds provide us with money to cover a few expenses (we’re getting ready to hire a proofreader, invest in swag production and mailers, and just paid $400 to license cover art, for example)
3] You can take care of one or a few holiday gifts in advance! Pub day is Dec. 10 + we’re happy to gift wrap free + ship direct to recipients of your choice so it arrives in time for Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and any other December holidays—we will even include a special note on your behalf! More convenient and less expensive than shipping twice.

WHAT MAKES THIS BOOK SUCH A GREAT GIFT?

1] It’s a book!
2] Short story coll.’s are great for avid and occasional readers because everybody has time for a story here + there
3] THIS collection is full of relatable, universal experiences: we don’t like saying things like “something for everybody” but really do feel like there’s something for everybody here

All opinions are my own and no A.I. was used to create my responses: I have not read any other reviews of this article (only seen quick mentions on social media), and do not use A.I. in any part of my research, writing, editing, or ideation processes. by @poolpartymag
