Finished a new painting! 🖼️

“The Colors of Joy”
This is my story of how I found joy and discovered myself along the way. It starts in darkness. From a place of unknown uncertainty. With swipes of blue, I revisit my undersea playground of wrecks and reefs. Where I would hover weightlessly upside to get a glimpse of a spiny lobster or moray eel. Turquoise connects me to a place I haven’t seen but can picture so clearly. Jeju island, home to the haenyeo. Female divers. Green is the Needle Fir Forest where I walked with 30 of my fellow Korean Adoptees. Mixing yellow onto the canvas, reunites me with the mountain that overlooks my birth family’s village. Blowing out candles on a birthday cake. The orange sunrise is the dawn of a new day on Gyeongpo beach. And pink is the hanbok I wore when I finally embraced what it means to feel Korean.

A red line swoops through the painting to connect all the parts together. Like a bojagi. And to finish the piece, I sign it. Not with a name that was given to me, but one I have chosen.

And I sign it with Joy.

This is a project I recently completed. A story so close to me that it has taken a lifetime to unearth… 🧶 This is the (abridged) journey of discovering what it means to be a Korean Adoptee and the story of what was lost and found along the way… From America to Korea and back again. 🇰🇷🇺🇸

This sketchbook has been made with mixed media, Tombow fudenoske markers, love, grief and lessons. I am honored to have it be added to the Sketchbook Collective at @propagate.studio 🎨📚🖊️

I was inspired by @aimeelecours_lols recent Dopamine Decor room tour and decided to make a video of my own to highlight some of things in my home that make me happy and give me that boost of dopamine whenever I look at them 💕✨ by @poorly_drawn_plans

Meet artist Joy Choi @poorly_drawn_plans She uses watercolor, gouache, and acrylic paints to tell her stories. She will often incorporate washed up plastic she finds along the beach into unique mixed media pieces.

As an avid urban sketcher, Joy loves to quickly sketch a moment whether it be during her travels or right in her neighborhood.

There is nothing better than waking up to a day off with no plans that turns into a lovely solo artist date. I walked around the beautiful grounds of @casafelizmuseum in Winter Park and made a sketch.

Casa Feliz is located right off Park Avenue and is the signature work of architect James Gamble Rogers II.

Over the last month I’ve gotten to see a bunch of live events and various performances around town. And while I may sketch quickly, I am apparently pretty slow when it comes to actually posting them on social media. There is something so special about capturing the magical moments of a show with a live sketch.

Most of these sketches were gifted to the performers after their shows. My way of saying thank you to them for entertaining me and sharing their talents on stage. I love my funny little hobby. ✍️

1. @p.sparklelive 10 year anniversary show
2. @emilyfontano “Against her wishes”
3. @chasethatpadgett “how to play guitar poorly”
4-6. Erika MacDonald “Tea Time” for Outfest
7. “Hot Mess”
8–10. @tushvstymisha “Q the Legends”
11-12. @leecohencomedy_official comedy show
13. @looselipsorlando September show @lil_indies
14. The winter park ukelele society
15. Immerse Artist Launch

“Cycle Breaker”
9 x 12” original watercolor 🎨

I was recently approached by a fellow Korean Adoptee asking me to commission a piece for her based on her TEDx Talk “Breaking the Cycle of Grief through Communication”

I wanted to include some of the elements she referenced in her talk like her childhood journal, the journal she found from her mother, the beautiful hanbok she wore and her special place in Korea, Bukhansan mountain. 🏔️

This was such an honor to create something so personal and meaningful for a KAD! I hope you enjoy it @heatherjsgittens 🇰🇷🫰🏽💗

The stories were “salty” but the vibes were immaculate. Congrats to JJ, Laura and Richard! taken in CityArts by @poorly_drawn_plans

A great night of storytelling at last nights @cityarts_orlando @orlandostoryclub the theme was “salty” and there were so many amazing stories! From food preferences, health, high school decisions, and finding yourself in unexpected places. I captured the moment with quick sketches of the hosts and storytellers (minus myself).

Thank you @thebobbywesley @danielleziss for hosting this beautiful little community!
