No sooner had I discovered the creative side of balloons than making balloon dresses for a parade jumped onto my bucket list. 💃🎈

So here we are: my very first parade entry, wearing balloon dresses I made, carrying ridiculously oversized balloons, and having an absurd amount of fun at the Beaverton Celebration Parade.

And because every ridiculous idea needs friends willing to say, “Sure, I’ll wear that in public,” I’m VERY grateful for the friends who indulged me and became balloon princesses for a day! The friend in yellow even made her own dress! 💛🧡

A big nod to Grant @showtimeballoonco whose work I love studying. He has absolutely mastered designing balloon costumes for performance—not just something wearable that looks great. He understands how balloons behave on a moving human body and designs pieces that come alive when a person walks, bounces, and performs in it. That sense of movement was inspiration for my dresses. My parade poles are straight-up his design because when someone has already figured out the magic, I’m happy to learn from the master. 🎭

Bucket list: balloon dresses ✔️
Parade ✔️
Being subtle: still no.

🐩💖 She’s 12 feet tall. Her name is Penelope.

She strutted through downtown Portland like she owned it—because honestly, she kinda did. 🤌

This is what happens when Popfetti shows up to your celebration! Balloons become a vibe and a full-on event.

Who says wind and balloons don’t get along? 💨🎈Here’s my simple tutorial for making wind wavers that dance in the breeze instead of fighting it.

If you’re making these for Fourth of July, they even look like fireworks! 🎆

Save this for your next outdoor event.

Supplies used:
-Decomex 18” linking balloons
-Sempertex 12” Link-o-loons
-Sempertex 5” rounds

My husband flew 2,000 miles so three generations —father, son, and grandson—could be together in Milwaukee for Games 1 & 2 of the Brewers-Dodgers series.

I stayed home and made a new Zoom backdrop for his office. 🎈

LA client as soon as the camera came on: “We should just end this meeting now.”

As of post, Brewers are up 3-0. Let’s finish this thing! 💙💛

I spent the night before my MBP exam ugly-crying on the floor of my hotel room. I’d just learned my prepared centerpiece design didn’t meet the judging criteria. I was 1,000 miles from home, with only the balloons in my suitcase, when I scrapped both of my prepared projects and wondered how the heck I was going to pass using the handful of supplies in front of me.

But I did it. I passed. And now I’d like to make the road easier for the next person.

This is the first in a series about taking the Sempertex Master Balloon Professional exam (MBP): what to expect, how to prepare, what I wish I’d known, and all the little things that can help you walk in feeling ready.

Also, I’d love to make this bigger than my experience. If you’ve taken the MBP, share what helped you or what you wish you’d known. If your experience is more vulnerable- I’ve already heard from some who didn’t pass- feel free to DM me. I’m happy to share your feedback anonymously so it can help someone else.

So, if the MBP is on your list, send me your questions! What do you want to know? I’ll answer as many as I can throughout the series. Also check the comment section for what others may add over time.

The MBP is absolutely doable - and I’m rooting for you! 📣

Important disclaimer: I don’t work for Sempertex or Betallic. I’ve never seen the MBP rubric. Nobody has given me any inside information. I’m simply sharing my experience as a candidate and my own observations about what helped - or would have helped- me prepare.

It’s fall, y’all! 🍂🌻

I spent time learning from the ridiculously talented Jasmine @blondieballoons_ and now I’ve got enough tractors, scarecrows, pumpkins, and sunflowers to fill a pumpkin patch. 🎃

If your fall festival, school event, or company party needs a photo op that gets people excited to take and share pictures, I’m ready. 🚜🌻🎃

No boring balloons.

There’s no better reason to make a set of completely unnecessary, over-the-top costumes than because it makes you happy and spreads joy in your own community.

👉 Swipe through to see the whole collection.

This was my first parade, and everyone delivered. All these joyful bubbles bounced and wiggled their way down the street, and the crowd absolutely lit up (and pulled out their phone cameras!) as we went by.

A big creative nod to Grant at @showtimeballoonco , whose costume designs I love studying. The parade poles came from him, and you can see his influence in this entire set.

HUGE thanks to my amazing friends who gave up their time and public dignity to model balloon costumes and make this dream of mine come true. 💕

Orange came with a plot twist. 🧡

She’s volunteered on enough of my nonprofit community projects that she’s picked up some serious balloon skills. So when she offered to help me inflate for the parade, I asked, “Want to make your dress?”

Her answer: “Heck yeah!”

She made every piece of this herself—and even designed that fabulous cape. I think I may have created a monster. And frankly, I’m thrilled about it. 🎈🧡

Purple went BIG. 💜
This one was all about scale, texture, and movement - with all those different sizes bouncing and moving independently as she walked.

This dress deserves a very specific nod to @showtimeballoonco . I studied the way he uses shape, scale, and especially movement to make balloons come alive on a person, then played with those ideas in my own work. This one wears his inspiration pretty proudly. 💜🎈

Blue, but make it bouncy. 💙
I loved the movement in this one—the curly 260s bounced and wiggled their way down the parade route and made the whole dress feel alive. Plus a little peek behind the curtain: balloon couture does, in fact, require tying your friends into their outfits. 😂
