I was jazzed to dig into ASSHOLES: A THEORY by Aaron James... maybe I should rephrase that... I was excited to begin reading ASSHOLES: A THEORY by Aaron James, but about a third through the book, I'm realizing that it suffers from the same problem many older sociological theorems do... time has rendered it too anachronistic. This book came out in 2012, which means Donald Trump was at the time merely a "self-important developer-entertainer," barely rating a few mentions herein. It's almost quaint seeing James discussing assholes in politics in a pre-Trump era. I mean, G-Dub was incompetent and callous, kinda dumb and often obtuse, but an asshole? Debatable, especially compared with Trump and his enablers since 2016. Assholeism has become so much more normalized and even celebrated in our culture since this book came out, it's like reading a book about the perils of the Internet written in 2000. I'll finish it, but I think this book needs a revised edition.

I set aside the Lovecraft again to read this vintage paperback I picked up for a buck at the flea markets on Labor Day. THE UNTOUCHABLES (Award Books, 1969, originally published 1947) by Eliot Ness with Oscar Fraley is billed on the cover as “The brutally revealing portrait of a mobster… as explosively exciting as The Godfather” and on the back as “The anatomy of a mafia boss,” but man is that ever a bait and switch! There’s actually very little Capone insider stuff in the book, rather it’s the legendary federal agent’s own story of trying to dry up Chicago and put ol’ Scarface behind bars. It’s a quick, breezy read, certainly self-serving and at times naturally reactionary, but not necessarily a keeper. But I couldn’t help but keep thinking (as I do every time I think about this sad era in America’s history) that were I alive and adult during Prohibition, I’d have been breaking the law and taking the bootleggers’ side like most of the citizenry!

Did the Halloween decorating yesterday then made some burgers with @hazlewoodhaven. It’s the start of the time of the year (Sept-Jan) when there are like a dozen string lights going in the apartment (as opposed to the mere five that are hung 365). And candles. And action figures. Okay, so it’s not that different from the rest of the year. Whattyagonnado.

Last November, I put away this Penguin Classics H.P. Lovecraft collection halfway through, shifting into Xmas mode. I reopened it this week right at "The Call of Cthulhu," his most iconic work, and... it's just not working.

Part of it is the racism, frequent and repulsive. Part of it is my apparently lacking vocabulary (I'm actually shocked at the number of words I don't know). Part of it is my old brain finding it increasingly difficult to focus when I read, particularly with prose.

But maybe the biggest and saddest reason is that—perhaps due to being a comic book reader—I struggle to translate words into pictures in my mind. I know, I'm supposed to be an "artist," so you'd think that process would be both easy and fun when reading stuff like this, but I actually hate it. Verbose descriptions of horrific things just fall flat and I end up wishing there were illustrations. It's a failing that I really hate.

Anyone else have this problem with fiction?

The clouds kinda squelched the sunset for the annual Art + Autonomy Sunset Sail around the Statue of Liberty, but at least the rains stayed away. Always a lovely way to spend an evening (even if the playlist was kinda cheesy this year and we had to do our pre-gaming at a golf club bar at Chelsea Piers)….
