Petworth Citizen opened in the former Island Cafe space back in September 2013. They closed in 2020. Petworth Citizen was named as an homage to a newspaper that published from 1916-1918! A bonus dose right there! by @popville

Granville Moore’s:
“DC’s Original Belgian Beer & Moules Frites Tavern”

Thanks to a few readers for sharing the sad news with us: “I learned that Granville Moore’s is officially closing on October 31.”

What a run :( After opening in 2007, after 10 years we learned that the owner of the Queen Vic was taking over Granville Moore’s from Chef Teddy Folkman. During Covid in 2020 there was fear of a closure but fortunately we had a ‘Do You Believe in Miracles? Granville Moore’s edition’.

Granville Moore’s was a massive addition to the neighborhood. Granville Moore’s was one of the first to bring excitement to a revitalizing (pre-streetcar!) H Street, NE along with the Argonaut, Red and the Black, Palace of Wonders, Rock and Roll Hotel (all RIP) and thank God the still open Pug next door. Granville Moore’s was great. Granville Moore’s is great. They will be missed. Maybe there will be another miracle in the works. It’s happened before…

Stay tuned. by @popville

Oh man, this Starbucks was the last thing propping this once hopping retail strip up. Remember the Vie de France?!? There was a time, I’m telling ya! Crazy to see all the vacant spaces now.

Swipe for a look at the row now. Somehow that GNC is hanging in there…

Yo!! You cannot keep the Post Pub down!!

This spot was previously home to the Persian restaurant, Kabuli Pulao, for a hot second before “temporarily” closing. And now a liquor license has been posted for the Post Pub (good thing they didn’t paint over the side signage, see above…).

I just got off the phone with the owner of Kabuli Pulao who tells me he will be reopening the space as the Post Pub as soon as the new liquor license comes through. There will be an American menu with “great sandwiches” (and more), he tells me.

Stay tuned for an exact opening date, hopefully in a month or so.

ICYMI: Post Pub 2.0 Calls it Quits (August 2024) – Building for lease.

Back in June 2020 we learned that the OG Post Pub had closed after 43+ years at 1422 L Street, NW. by @popville

Finally some good news, no, great news:

Over the summer, in July to be specific we noticed some action at the old Makan/Thirsty Crow space in the prime corner location at 11th and Park Road, NW in Columbia Heights.

Now I can finally share what’s coming, two spots – The Porch & Pebbles!! Ever since Meridian Pint closed (back in 2019 if you can believe it) people have told me they wish something like Meridian Pint would open up there. While Makan was great, as an OG Meridian Pint fan I couldn’t agree more. And that’s basically what’s gonna happen with The Porch & Pebbles. But what has me really super excited about this is WHO is behind the new spot. It is the great team behind Nanny O’Briens, Atomic Billiards, Franklin Hall and so many more.

To sum it up – The Porch (upstairs): “Good food and drinks at comfortable prices, a large patio, trivia and family meals.”

Pebbles (downstairs): “Pool and games give friends another reason to meet at the same address. Food comes from the upstairs kitchen, supporting both venues with one menu and one culinary team.”

Essentially, exactly what many in the neighborhood have been pining for!

So much bad news/tough closings lately (I promise some good news this week) but can’t skip this painful upcoming closure. There was a time DUKEM came up as number one or near number one (along with the OG Zenebech in Shaw and Meskerem in Adams Morgan) on every best Ethiopian restaurant in DC list.

Sadly owner Tefera Zewdie passed away in 2022 and in 2024 the owners had expressed tough times. Thanks to all who messaged us the sad news last week: “Dukem and the upstairs lounge will permanently close on November 7th.”

A bit of background: “Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant
Ethiopian Food Landmark in DC for 29 years.
Family Owned & Operated.

Tefera Zewdie and Hiwot Gebru opened Dukem Ethiopian Carryout & Market on U street in 1997. At the time Dukem was one of the first Ethiopian restaurants on the U street corridor. The business grew in popularity over the years and evolved into the full service restaurant we know today as Dukem Ethiopian Restaurant.“

Still some time to say farewell.

One of the first to emerge at Navy Yard 2.0.

“TaKorean closed after 12 years in business. Many folks down in Navy yard are walking up to the locked doors with sadness. They will be missed! Their union market location is still open.”

THERE WAS A TIME…

An absolute dagger out of Union Market yesterday. In my opinion Neopol was the absolute best food option within Union Market proper. I feel like I’ve been hit with a sledgehammer. Salmon BLT I will miss you more than you can possible know. Thanks for the memories.

Update from Neopol:

“After 14 incredible years, it’s hard to put into words what Union Market has meant to us.

Thank you to Union Market for giving Neopol a place to grow, and thank you to every customer who stopped by, shared a meal with us, brought a friend, told someone about us, or simply kept coming back. Your support has meant more to us than you know.

And most importantly, thank you to our amazing staff—past and present. None of these 14 years would have been possible without your hard work, dedication, and the care you brought to Neopol every day.

We leave Union Market with so many great memories, friendships, and an incredible amount of gratitude.

Thank you for 14 unforgettable years, DC. ❤️

This isn’t goodbye to Neopol. We hope you’ll come visit us at one of our Baltimore locations. We’d love to see you.” by @popville

How incredibly cool! We’ve posted coyotes before but this one looks the most robust. Also very cool how she’s framed by the foliage.

Thanks to Will for sending: “COYOTE SPOTTING: Friday afternoon in the Glover Park woods near Wesley Heights / Berkley. Approximately 70lbs…. Keep your pets and children close when walking!”

Beadazzled closed after 29 years back in 2018!! Oh there was a time… From their then closing note:

“We are very sad to be closing Beadazzled in DC. It was our first store, my baby, built with sweat equity and funded by bead sales from my home over the summer of 1989. For 29 years our amazing team has loved you, and we’ve been grateful to be loved by you. We’ve watched 10-year-old customers, and some of our teen-aged summer staffers grow up to bring their own children into Beadazzled. You’ve helped us through good times and bad, and we hope we’ve done the same for you.

With deep thanks and appreciation for your support,

Penny Diamanti” by @popville

Starting Monday morning off on the good foot!

Remove the impractical service lane and watch the Cleveland Park Promenade continue to bloom!! I’m told that next up for the pedestrian paradise will be:

“Over Doughs Bagels is going into old Captain Cookie Space. Handcraft Donuts taking over former Sakusaku. (3417 Connecticut Ave, NW)”
