Dear Friends, liebe Freunde

As some of you know after 3 years and over 20 exhibitions we decided to not continue with our project space @porteleipzig.

We would like to thank all the great artists that participated in our Shows as well as all those who, visited the Shows and with their presence supported us and the Artists. There are too many to name here. `Porte´ wouldn't have been possible without all of your help, initiative and support.

The last 3 years were full of lovely encounters, exciting projects and a lot of intensive work. We made many new friends and strengthened existing relationships through our work at `Porte´. We are glad that we managed to be a platform for artists who are less represented locally in addition to well established artists in Leipzig and proud that we were able to bring together many different artists and lay a foundation for future projects. We hope that we were able to make our own individual and characteristic contribution to Leipzig’s art scene.

Since managing and organising an art-space takes a lot of time and energy, we decided that it's a good time and point to end it now and leave on a high note. We both need to concentrate full time on our own artistic work again. We wish you all much success and see you around.

The first Fantomas novel was published in spring 1911. The story of a criminal who never shies away from any atrocity and who is never caught, but always finds a way to escape.

In the mid-1910s and 1920s, the books were translated into English, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, Finnish, Hungarian and Russian. In all the countries where these languages are spoken, Fantômas also leaves its mark on the cultural sphere. Why not or hardly at all in German-speaking countries?

The exhibition deals with this question and traces the story of Bruno Vogel, who translated Fantomas into german.

Vogel was born 1898 in Leipzig. After the terrible experiences of the First World War, he became a pacifist and anarchist. Vogel wrote one of the first German anti-war books, "Es lebe der Krieg", and a classic of homosexual emancipation literature, "Alf".
In the 1920s, he worked for the FAUD, the Syndicalist and the Magnus Hirschfeld Society, among others. Together with Kurt Hiller, he founded the „Gruppe Revolutionärer Pazifisten“.
In the 1930s, Vogel translated the first Fantômas novel into German.
Vogel died in London in 1987 after living in exile in Austria, Norway and South Africa, where he campaigned against apartheid.

The exhibition Do you ever dream of your phone?" is based on the irritating feeling that the question triggers in many people. We constantly use a wide variety of devices, especially our smartphones. But do these devices appear in our dreams? The answer is usually to which a surprised “no”. We process experiences in our sleep, but what does it mean that end devices rarely or never appear there? The answer probably lies in their intangible nature; they refer to further content, which then in turn finds its place in our dreams. However, the object itself apparently only exists to a limited extent in our perception.

The displays developed by Markus Heller in collaboration with Mat Geisler play with this moment of irritation between materiality and immateriality. The constructions made of metal and wooden panels covered with black foil move somewhere between the inactive "Black Mirror" state of screens, the mysterious and knowledge-expanding monolith from Kubrick's "Space Odyssey" and mundane bed frames. From the front, they block the view of the works of art positioned behind them and at the same time restructure the PORTE exhibition space. The large black surfaces indicate mass, which dissolves as you walk past, revealing what lies behind. The brief moment in which a black screen transforms into a window to further content and the actual object of the smartphone disappears from our hand is depicted in the room. The contrast between materiality and immateriality reappears in von Geisler's respective works and Heller invited artists on.
