New In: Saori Q1 Wall/Ceiling Lamp by Kazuhide Takahama

Designed by Kazuhide Takahama in 1973, the Saori Q1 sits between lighting and sculpture. White stretch fabric is drawn over a metal framework, forming a square surface lifted by a curved diagonal support. When illuminated, the fabric diffuses the light into a soft, even glow, revealing the contours of its construction.

Inspired by traditional Eastern lanterns, Takahama replaced rice paper with fabric to explore a different quality of light. Saori belongs to a series of lamps named after members of his family, bringing a personal dimension to its restrained, architectural form.

An architect and designer trained in Japan, Takahama developed much of his career in Italy following his meeting with Dino Gavina at the Milan Triennale in 1957. Saori reflects the meeting of these design cultures through its precise geometry and sensitive use of material.

New In: A rare set of S64 cantilever armchairs by Marcel Breuer for Thonet, known in Thonet’s collection as the Cesca chair. Their black tubular steel frames and curved armrests give the chairs a graphic silhouette, while the black and cream Dalmatian short velvet brings an unexpected playfulness to the Bauhaus design.

Designed in 1928 and produced by Thonet from 1930’s, the Cesca brought together traditional furniture craftsmanship and the possibilities of tubular steel. Its cantilever construction removes the need for rear legs, creating an open, architectural silhouette in which the seat appears suspended. Upholstered versions offer a softer expression of the familiar design.

Monochrome Artist Dish:
An artist hand-painted ceramic dish defined by its bold monochrome palette and rhythmic abstract motif. Layered concentric bands of gestural black brushwork create a strong sense of movement, contrasting with the simplicity of the glazed white ground. Signed by artist.

Can be wall mounted or used as a functional vessel, it sits equally comfortably as a sculptural object, celebrating the expressive relationship between pattern, form and craftsmanship.

Amanta modular 3 piece sofa by Mario Bellini.
Originally Designed in 1966 by Mario Bellini during his early experimental period, the form balances softness and structure in a way that still feels remarkably contemporary today. One of the defining pieces of Italian design, the Amanta introduced a new approach to modular living through its low-slung profile, moulded shell construction and oversized cushions.

This original C&B Italia example is upholstered in cognac leather, softened with age and contrasted by the off white shell and signature black feet. Deeply comfortable and visually architectural, each module can function independently or as part of a larger configuration through base connector.

A celebrated and increasingly collectible Bellini design that sits comfortably between functional seating and sculptural object. More than fifty years later, its balance of softness, proportion and sculptural form feels remarkably contemporary. Known mostly for holding its form and value

𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐀 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐭: 𝐈𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞 #𝟎𝟔
A conversation series with the people and ideas that continue to inspire and shape Porter.

This week, I sit down with @cescadvorak , a textile designer and artist known for her striking, playful approach to pattern. Working with traditional textile-making methods and natural fibres, her practice spans woven blankets and rugs, screen-printed linen, silk accessories and private commissions.

I was first drawn to Cesca’s work through her beautiful use of pattern and silk. There’s an instinctive quality to the way she works, creating pieces that feel authentically expressive, tactile and distinctly her own. Her work has been featured in World of Interiors, British Vogue, House & Garden along with commissions for Porter.

We talk about her approach to pattern, the importance of making by hand and the ideas behind Timeless, her new blanket collection. Conceived on a train journey, the pattern layers letters until they become almost illegible: camouflage formed through language.

Issue #06 with @cescadvorak is now live. by @porter_studios__

Last week, to mark London Design Festival, we opened the doors to artist Stephen Wright’s House of Dreams, a remarkable hybrid home and gallery created over more than two decades.

The first Porter Presents: Encounters, an intimate evening experiencing the house through the eyes of its creator, and a new series bringing people closer to creative spaces, practices and the people behind them.

An evening of discovery and conversation, exploring the relationship between artist, object and space, and the meaning we give to the things we choose to live with.

Stephen shared the stories, memories and processes held within the house, and his instinctive compulsion to collect, make and create. Here, objects become more than things: they hold memories, mark moments and collectively tell the story of a life.

A huge thank you to Stephen for so generously opening his home to us, and to everyone who joined us.

Huge thanks to:

A sculptural lamp composed of precisely cut metal strips arranged into a dome-like form, elevated on slender, tapering legs. When illuminated, its perforations and layered curves cast rhythmic lines of light across the surrounding space, emphasizing its kinetic, almost organism-like structure. A piece that sits between functional lighting and experimental metalwork.
