Villa Tugendhat by Mies Van Der Rohe built in 1930 featuring MR10 black hide leather chairs. Expressing a simplicity rooted in proportion, light and material. Slender steel columns and expansive glazing define an architecture of clarity and restraint.

Available: set of four MR10 attributed to the design by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (c.1927), these cantilever chairs are among the defining forms of early modernist furniture.

Emerging during the Bauhaus era, the cantilever chair reimagined traditional seating through the use of tubular steel, replacing four legs with a continuous frame that created both flexibility and visual lightness. Paired with black leather sling seats and backs, a recognisable icon of twentieth-century furniture.

A conversation series with the people and ideas that continue to inspire and shape Porter.

This week, I sit down with @cescadvorak , a textile designer and artist known for her striking, playful approach to pattern. Working with traditional textile-making methods and natural fibres, her practice spans woven blankets and rugs, screen-printed linen, silk accessories and private commissions.

I was first drawn to Cesca’s work through her beautiful use of pattern and silk. There’s an instinctive quality to the way she works, creating pieces that feel authentically expressive, tactile and distinctly her own. Her work has been featured in World of Interiors, British Vogue, House & Garden along with commissions for Porter.

We talk about her approach to pattern, the importance of making by hand and the ideas behind Timeless, her new blanket collection. Conceived on a train journey, the pattern layers letters until they become almost illegible: camouflage formed through language.

Our hire collection brings together more than 55 chairs, alongside tables, plinths, sofas, lighting, art and objects. Spanning designs by Mies van der Rohe, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Ingo Maurer, alongside individually crafted pieces and one-offs, each is selected for its form, materiality and sculptural presence.

Set of 4 Alias Belotti spring back corseted chairs.
Alias’ story began in 1979 with Giandomenico Belotti’s Spaghetti chair. These chairs feature a black enamelled steel base with seats and backs in black rubber. Comfortable and elegant, in very good vintage condition for age. Black rubber edition is out of production and now classed a collectors item.

Still considered one of the most contemporary expressions of modern design, the chair is part of the permanent collection at the MoMA in New York

A recent afternoon visit to @pavillonsouthway , the home and evolving work of artist, art historian and curator Emmanuelle Luciani.

Set within a family home dated 1880 between Marseille and the Calanques, Pavillon Southway is a home, gallery, artist residency and evolving creative project. Luciani describes it as a total domestic project, where art, architecture, sculpture and craft come together. Frescoes cover the walls, ceramics sit alongside furniture and sculpture, with works absorbed into the fabric of the rooms.

Less like visiting a collection and more like stepping inside an artist’s world: personal, layered and continually evolving. A reminder of how interesting a space can become when art and objects aren’t simply placed within it, but allowed to shape the way it is lived in.

On set _ Philippe Starck’s Pat Conley I (XO),
designed in 1985, comes from his earlier, more experimental body of work. A fine tubular steel frame is paired with a sweeping seat curve that gives the piece its architectural character, more structural gesture than conventional armchair. Spare, graphic and sculptural, it reflects Starck at his most pared back.
Starck named almost 60 pieces after characters and locations in Ubik, though in some cases he slightly twisted them, changing a letter or switching genders.
“My furniture often has curious names... They are taken from Ubik, a novel by Philip K. Dick which fascinates me by its very real intuition of modernity.” Starck’s pieces embody Dick’s futuristic, sci-fi aesthetic, through telepathy, psychic powers, corporate espionage, time slippage, cryogenics, and questions about the nature of perception.

𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐀 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐭: Issue #03 A conversation series with friends and community of inspiration for Porter.

Issue #03 from Rod Modell to Reddit with Bec Kirby @soosumsee ; a British artist based in Manchester, working across painting and textile. Her practice is shaped by personal experience and the environments she inhabits, grounded in an attention to light, atmosphere, and the material presence of the built environment.

Kirby’s work draws on the shifting conditions of the North of England, the way surfaces absorb moisture, dull, or sharpen in changing weather, alongside references to post-war architecture and interiors. These spatial systems are translated into the compositional structures of her work. Fleeting observations, the mood of a surrounding landscape, or the way forms sit together in nature, act as points of departure.

What draws me in is the tactility of her work and the rich depth she achieves through natural tones, a quality that remains consistent across both paint and textile.

Available: Iconic Christopher Dresser silver-plated teapot, circa 1879. Round form with circular window to centre. An ebonised timber handle, elevated by four feet.

Often described as the father of modern design, Christopher Dresser was one of the most influential designers of the nineteenth century. Combining functional thinking with bold geometric forms, his work feels remarkably contemporary today. Pieces by Dresser can be found in the permanent collections of the V&A and MoMA, New York.
Manufacturers stamp, produced by Sheffield based Dixon & sons founded in 1808.
