There’s something about layering tape saturated drones that never gets old.

I made a few samples by playing my electric guitar using volume swells, ebow & violin bow.
Some tracks went through reverb or delay, others are just the distorted signal.
High pass filters fully open so the noise floor is all dusty - no sweeping around here.

Any podcast enjoyers out there?
I had the absolute pleasure of being a guest on the Moor Thoughts podcast, hosted by the wonderful James Osland of @elm_records

We discussed my musical background, the worldbuilding behind Port Sleep, the fun and difficult sides of the creative process, and all things ambient.

The episode is out, you can find it over at @moor_thoughts or in my bio (Linktree).
Big thanks to James for inviting me and being such a great host!

Destroying pretty guitar loops with Eurorack.

Lately my sound design has been mostly about filtering and distortion. Here I am saturating, bending and sculpting a few loops made with clean guitar by combining @befacosynth Crush Delay, @pladaskelektrisk Dradd, @modbapmodular Hue and @shakmatmod Aeolus Seeds.

I’ve got a new album out that’s filled with similar, broken sounds. You can find the link in my bio.

There are certain chord progressions or melodies that always sound like a farewell to me. When I was writing “Sign of Rescue” it had that feeling from the very start.

I made this song after finishing Fog-Loom. They both share similarly evolving pads made with the Analog Four and crackly, lo-fi drones that I can never get enough of. At first, I tried arranging the pads so they would play a very specific melody, but the song felt very stiff, so I just let them run around freely and form their own melodic lines.

Since this album was about overcoming struggles and setbacks, naming the final song Sign of Rescue felt very fitting.

To be honest, I wasn’t fully happy with the frequency balance in this one until I heard the mastered version. @brodamic did such a wonderful job on the entire record, and on this track in particular. It breathes and flows just how I imagined it would. If you ever need an audio wizard, he’s the man with all the right spells.

And if you ever need a great label to work with, go check out @seilrecords - they’re simply the best 🙌

One jazz-flavoured chord was all it took to give „Faintly Coloured Longing” a heart of its own.
When I played it against some worn & grainy drones, it immediately yelled “nostalgia”. Suddenly, this late-evening jam was no longer just a jam, but a proper song - one that needed a title.

I went through my notebook of quotes and found this passage from 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami:
“In the midst of that tremendous lightning, the seething anger I had had was suddenly gone - at least, it had retreated far away. It was no longer the blazing anger I used to have. It had transformed into something more like a faintly colored sorrow.”

“Sorrow” sounded a tad too dark, but “longing” seemed to fit the atmosphere of the song just right.
Once I had the title and the main hook, the rest of the track naturally fell into place. I added multiple layers of Eurorack-processed guitar phrases and then went on to spend way too much time on the field recordings, making sure they had not too little crunch, not too much crunch, but just the right amount of crunch.

„Faintly Coloured Longing” ended up being my favourite song on the album, as well as the first piece of music I revealed from it back in January 2026.

No other piece of gear has transformed my songwriting as much as @weareelektron Digitakt.
Transitioning to a sampler-based workflow wasn’t that straightforward though. I used it a bit on two EPs (Meridian & Contour Lines), where it was acting like an extra instrument, and only figured out how to make it the centre of my workflow on As Long as This Warmth Remains.

Hunched Houses would never have happened if it weren’t for Digitakt. I made it by recording a few longer jams with both guitar and the Analog Four, then chopping them up and shaping to my heart’s content. It turned out quite groovy and dreamy, and became the first song I ever made with a steady, pulsating bassline.

I knew this track had to sit on the opposite side of the album from Pier No. 7. They both serve a similar purpose - easing things up a before the moodiest songs on the record.

I used to have an irrational grudge against acoustic guitars. Too many drunken campfire karaoke nights in my teenage years ruined it for me. I saw an acoustic and had flashbacks of the same five songs played on repeat and enthusiastically sung with way more confidence than skill 🍻
It wasn’t until I discovered Radiohead in college that the curse was broken. And I’m so happy that it happened because A Window with a Light Shining was made mostly with processed & sampled acoustic guitar.

Two odd things happened during the making of this song:
1. I wrote it in the morning, which almost never happens, because my brain usually flips to music-writing-mode after sunset
2. I managed to finish it during that initial session.
I was so in the zone that everything that was happening around me got pulled into the song. I was recording through a very hot condenser mic, so some unexpected guest appearances on this song include my neighbours or my wife doing chores around the apartment.

Everything about this track is noisy and imperfect and I really like that. In the past I used to clean up what I recorded or wait until things were quiet before tracking any acoustic instruments, but on this one I learned to embrace it, or even make it the central part of a song.

Fog-Loom almost didn’t make it into the album. It was by far the hardest song to finish.
For the longest time I couldn’t get the atmosphere right. It either felt too dark, or like nothing at all.

The song began with a few simple Analog Four pad patches that I animated using Eurorack. That was the easy part. I had these sombre melodies that I really liked, but they were floating around aimlessly.
I tried several drones and textures made with all sorts of instruments and nothing worked. Every guitar part that I added seemed to take away attention from the pads, which were supposed to be the star of the show. Eventually I just shelved this track and moved on to the other ones.

And that was exactly what was needed.
When I came back to it with fresh ears, after having completed a few more songs, the first thing I played was the bass line - the missing link. The puzzle was solved. Having that plucky low end helped me structure the other parts. I filled the stereo field with piano-like sounding guitar and combined some granular delay pedals with Eurorack to get the textures.

And just like that, what was supposed to be a throw-away song ended up being the first single for the new record.

It took me three years to cave in and try Eurorack, and Pier No. 7 was the first track I made with it.
Back then my rig was half the size of the current one - a single row of 60 HP.
I made all of the bubbly textures, drones and all sorts of broken sounds by relying heavily on Aeolus Seeds and Cold Mac. I still haven’t figured out how the second one works, but it sure can destroy sounds in all the right ways.

A really special part of this song was the field recording. I captured it in my hometown last year, when I came to visit my parents. I wanted to show the place to my wife, so we went for a walk, got sidetracked and took some obscure road that led us to a small radio mast in an abandoned field. By the time we got there the day was ending and the whole area was soaked in a fairytale-like sunset. That was when I captured the field recording. It’s a power generator humming along to a band of crickets chirping in sync.
This memory became my reference point for the entire song. I kept going back to it whenever I got stuck, and it eventually helped me get this track over the finish line.
