❤️ Mama’s first piece ❤️

This performance was bittersweet in ways most people didn’t know.

After becoming a mom, pole became harder to access. Between two pregnancies, two babies, work, and life, I spent years accepting that this thing I loved would have to take a backseat. I dabbled here and there, but it wasn’t until after my daughter was born that I realized how much I missed this part of myself.

I love being a mom to my two little ones. But I also love me.

So six months ago, I made a commitment to come back to pole consistently. That commitment was only possible because of my village. My mom, my aunt, and my partner stepped in so I could take classes, train, and eventually build this piece. I know how lucky I am to have that support, and I don’t take it for granted.

What most people didn’t know was that this performance was also my goodbye to NYC.

Two days later, we packed up our apartment and moved our family to Colorado.

While everyone saw me working toward this performance, I was also quietly saying goodbye to a city, a community, and a support system that helped us build our family.

I cried on the subway after some of my last practices. (And yes, New Yorkers really do mind their biz and let you cry in peace 😭)

Thank you to my Foxy family 🦊 for reminding me how strong I am and why pole continues to be such an important part of who I am. Especially Ashley @foxyashleyfox and Mama Melly ❣️ @therealmellyb

Thank you to Ai for helping me create this piece and pushing me into new skills I never would’ve explored on my own. @ng.tiramisu 🪑 🫶 💛

Thank you to Sammie @sammie.the.moon and Sierra @sierra.berkeley at The Atrium @theatrium.space for creating a space where I could decompress, train, and simply be after long days of motherhood. 💙🌀

And to the friends and family who showed up to support me, thank you. I know not everyone understands pole, which made it mean even more that you came anyway. ❤️🥰❤️

I’ll miss New York.

I’ll miss this community.

It’s the Cornell 57. Not the Cornell 7.

We talk a lot about men protecting women in the loudest ways. “If anyone ever hurts my mom, my sister, my wife…”
But protection isn’t always heroic. And it doesn’t have to be violent.

Sometimes it’s quiet. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable.

It’s telling your friend, “that’s not cool.”
It’s not laughing at the sexist joke. It’s saying something when the group chat crosses a line. It’s calling out the catcall when everyone else keeps walking.

It’s easy to imagine being the hero when there’s a villain standing in front of you.
I hope I’m raising a man who speaks up when the person standing in front of him is his friend.

One day my little boy will be a man, in rooms I’m not in.

I hope I’m raising the man who says something. 🤍

Took my first ever gymnastics class this past week and left thinking about how much fun it is to be bad at something 😆

Pole was different for me. I was pretty good at it right away, and I know that was part of what hooked me.

Lately, I’ve been learning to give myself a little more grace there too. My body has had two babies and almost 5 years without a consistent pole practice. I can’t expect every trick to come back just because I decided I want it to.

Gymnastics reminded me how much joy there is in being a beginner. In letting your body learn something without requiring it to be good at it first.

Turns out you can just try shit because it looks fun. 🤸‍♀️

Anyway, I’m going back next week 😂
