𝐓𝐀𝐁 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟔: 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐃𝐒 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐒𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐒𝐘𝐌𝐏𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐔𝐌

@tallinnarchitecturebiennale 2026 opened on 9 September at Linnahall, followed by a week of conversations across the city. On Friday 11 September, the EKA auditorium hosted the "Sounds Expensive" Symposium, a practice-driven look at how architects navigate economies, constraints and systems of value, questioning assumptions around affordability and efficiency.

The day unfolded in three movements, each pairing a lecture with a panel led by the speaker. Claire Zimmerman (University of Toronto) opened with "The Costs of Architecture, in Formation", reading the politics of society through the cost of building and infrastructure, followed by Tõnis Savi, Johannes Koch of Max von Werz Arquitectos and Avarrus arkkitehdit. Mathias-Vincent Palazzi and Thomas Flores presented "On Architecture and Expenditure", their research on frugal and austere paradigms developed at the Jan van Eyck Academie, with Secretary, Mantas Peteraitis and Salto. Phineas Harper closed with "Architecture After Growth", joined by asphalt, O–P and KAVAKAVA.

The symposium was preceded on 10 September by the EKA Architecture Department conference "To Be Continued…", on how architecture can move forward by building on existing knowledge and practices in the face of climate and resource challenges, and the week closed with the TAB Gala at the EKKM – Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia.

In the heart of Bologna’s Parco del Cavaticcio district, Palazzina Magnani takes on a new public function. In the wing of the building that once housed the Embassy Cinema in the 1930s, the Agenzia del Demanio (Italian State Property Agency) commissioned architecture practice @mc2aa, founded by Dario Costi and Simona Melli, to redesign the interiors and offices of its Emilia-Romagna Regional Directorate.

More than a simple reorganisation of space, the project supports the transition from a traditional model of individual offices towards a more flexible, shared working environment. The aim was to make the open-plan office a functional and welcoming place for staff accustomed to the privacy of individual rooms, while introducing a variety of settings suited to different activities and needs.

MC2AA’s project involved the complete redesign of the three office levels, covering more than 1,000 square metres. One of the central aspects of the project is the way workstations are used. The spaces accommodate approximately 60 employees according to a flexible model: none of the workstations in the open-plan areas is permanently assigned to an individual, allowing each person to choose where to work each day simply by connecting their laptop.

Greenery is a cross-cutting element throughout the project and was developed in collaboration with landscape architecture practice @bscapestudio as an integral part of the interior design. Custom-made planters, large tables with integrated planting and a green wall in the ground-floor meeting room bring natural elements into the workplace, creating a more varied and welcoming spatial experience.

From 11 September 2026 to 6 January 2027, @rhinocerosroma hosts 犀牛 Xi Niu: In Search of New Routes, a special exhibition curated by @claire_s_li.

Reopening the historic dialogue between Rome and China in a new contemporary light, the exhibition brings together seven artistic practices from China: @caominghaochenjianjun, @Hao___liang, @Han_Mengyun, @xiexiexiefan, Xie Nanxing, @zhao___gang, and @Zhou_Yilun1001.

Spanning painting, sculpture, film, and material research, the works explore centuries of cross-cultural encounter between East and West.

The 125th issue of @ajakirimaja, Estonia's architecture and design magazine, takes the form of the official catalogue for the 8th @tallinnarchitecturebiennale, guest-edited by TAB 2026 co-curator Mira Samonig.

Structured around TAB 2026's main theme "How Much?", the issue brings together essays, positions and questionings that investigate the relationship between constraints, cost and architecture.

Contributors include Eik Hermann, Phineas Harper, Claire Zimmerman, Stuudio Täna and many more.

The @tallinnarchitecturebiennale 2026 Installation Competition "Budget Bougie" invited architects to explore how limited resources can generate spatial richness and a sense of luxury. Participants were asked to design a temporary outdoor pavilion in front of the Estonian Museum of Architecture, in Tallinn's Rotermann district, addressing a single question: can ingenuity, material resourcefulness and careful design replace expense?

The winning pavilion, "Resonance", is by Aru Ma- Architects, founded in 2021 by Cheng Hao Chung and Zhang Jie between Shanghai and Tokyo, with collaborators Cui Jiakai and Matteo Minnicelli. It transforms standard materials such as rebar, rope, limestone and plywood into an intimate, acoustically sensitive courtyard. Anchored by a central stone core, the tensile structure turns material and budgetary constraints into an environment defined by light, wind, sound and gravity.

Alongside the pavilion, the Installation Competition Exhibition at the Estonian Museum of Architecture presents the top 30 submissions, highlighting inventive approaches that demonstrate how spatial generosity and architectural quality can emerge from limitation, simplicity and thoughtful design.

Pastina @pastinaisgood, the Rome-based design studio founded in 2016 by Domenico Santoro and Francesca Puddu, unveiled Soft Monuments, on view until 20 September 2026 at @lakecomodesignfestival (Contemporary Design Selection, Villa Saporiti, Como - Italy).

The ambiguity between substance and perception takes shape in the elements that compose Soft Monuments. Upholstered volumes, built through the aggregation of padded volumes, retain the sculptural weight and generous proportions of classical monuments while reworking them into a soft, continuous mass. Its scale exceeds that of domestic furniture without reaching that of architecture. Measuring 340 × 200 × 120 cm, Soft Monuments occupies a middle ground between the two, encouraging visitors to approach, pause and engage.

Soft Monuments is available in three material configurations: textile, 3D textile and full-grain leather, all featuring hammered leather detailing. For Lake Como Design Festival, it is presented in a special edition upholstered in Groma, the new textile developed by Pastina @pastinaisgood in collaboration with @byborre. Its composition is never fixed: seats and volumes can expand, contract and take on different configurations.

On view at Tallinn's Linnahall until 30 November 2026, the Curatorial Exhibition of the @tallinnarchitecturebiennale brings together architects, researchers and interdisciplinary practitioners from Estonia and abroad. The projects range from critiques of architecture's financialised condition to proposals exploring reuse, resource-conscious construction, adaptation and alternative models of development.

"This inquiry begins with Tallinn's Linnahall, a protected 20th-century landmark. Long abandoned yet continuously debated, the building itself embodies the Biennale's central theme: reconstruction is too expensive, demolition equally so, and delayed decisions add further costs. In Rome’s Flaminio district, Casa Continua by @STUDIOTAMAT unfolds as a continuous sequence of rooms connected by visual and physical thresholds. The dining room acts as a hinge between spaces: here, the table and vintage Libellula chairs by Giovanni Carini occupy a room made permeable by reeded glass and burgundy metal partitions, which filter without enclosing and allow natural light to move freely throughout the apartment.

More intimate in character is the reading room, where the project shifts toward a tactile and secluded atmosphere. A custom book niche with integrated seating houses part of the owner’s extensive library. Here, tones deepen and the atmosphere becomes quieter and more protected.

The sleeping area maintains the same sense of rigour. Large bespoke oak wardrobes wrap the room, incorporating central panels upholstered in Filigrana fabric by l’Opificio, while the rear wall is finished in Harlequin’s Elsworthy Wide Width wallpaper, whose subtle organic pattern forms a backdrop to a Flou bed in ochre velvet — a chromatic accent that recalls the tones of the living spaces.
