427 – Dreams

Dairon is named among the three most magic players; Alan and Sara aren’t even named among the three most magic podcasters. Join The Man of the West and The Shieldmaiden of Rohan as we begin our long look at the oldest version of the story of Beren and Lúthien, known as The Tale of Tinúviel. Tinúviel dances better than anyone this side of Valinor, Beren is an Elf from the wrong side of the tracks, and Tinwelint wants his daughter to listen carefully to the sound of her loneliness. We like Tinúviel’s sass, acknowledge that Beren is a hero too, and readily acknowledge that Verlyn Flieger is our hero. Also, why doesn’t she like The Beatles?

Graphic of course by our wonderful graphic artist, @exploring.arda

426 – Tiny Dancer

Christopher Tolkien points out the ‘undercurrent of sardonic humor’ in Tolkien’s earliest version of this story; Alan and Sara’s sardonic humor is more like a whirlpool. Join The Man of the West and The Shieldmaiden of Rohan as we finish our walk through of Christopher’s introduction to the story of Beren and Lúthien. Christopher tells us that the original story exists only in a mostly-erased pencil manuscript, sets up the frame narrative for The Tale of Tinúviel, and explains what his father meant by ‘Gnome’. We talk about Tolkien as a different kind of war poet, engage in some lovely Fëanor-bashing, and find out precisely what a palimpsest is. Also, that’s a rom-com.

Graphic design credit of course goes to our wonderful @exploring.arda.

Happy Hobbit Day! September 22 marks the shared birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, two particularly important Hobbits, and we can think of few better reasons to return to the Shire. For The Prancing Pony Podcast, that also means looking back to Season 2, when Alan and Shawn followed Bilbo out his front door and spent an entire season walking through The Hobbit. Hobbit Day seems like a good excuse to revisit Season 2 of the PPP. And if you joined us later in the journey and have never listened through our coverage of The Hobbit, today is a great day to do so!

Revisit The Hobbit with the PPP:https://theprancingponypodcast.com/category/podcast-episodes/the-hobbit/

What are your favorite episodes, discussions, digressions, or moments from Season 2? How are you celebrating Hobbit Day today?"

424 – Your Song

Christopher Tolkien believes that the book he was working on was “in no conceivable way publishable”. Alan and Sara sometimes think the same about the podcast. Join The Man of the West and The Shieldmaiden of Rohan as we begin Season 11 and our year-long journey through Beren and Lúthien. Christopher wants to avoid turning his father’s literary history into a nonsense, recognizes that The History of Middle-earth might have a deterrent effect, and uses a familiar voice to tell us about Beleriand. We hope you don’t mind that we find ‘simply inexxagerable’ to be a tremendous phrase. We also try not to cry at an emotional letter, and believe that’s not a book - it’s a weapon. Also, a ‘mere maiden’?

It's a day of special magnificence in the Tolkien Community today: Happy 49th Birthday to The Silmarillion! On September 15, 1977, The Silmarillion was first published, and I think it’s fair to say that this particular book has a rather special place in the heart of The Prancing Pony Podcast Community and of the Podcast itself. After all, Season 1 of The PPP began with The Silmarillion. For many of us, those episodes were where our own journeys with the podcast began, too, and over a decade later from the start of the Podcast, here we all are.

(Katie here!) As I've done previously to celebrate this book, I have some prompts dedicated to it. You're welcome to select one, two or even all of them; let us know your responses down in the comments!

- Share your favorite art pertaining to The Silmarillion (please make sure to credit the artist).

- What are your favorite episodes, insights, digressions, pronunciations, shenanigans, and/or other moments from Season 1? What are you most excited for Alan to revisit when the PPP eventually returns to The Silmarillion?

- What First Age question, character, event, place, or wonderfully confusticating family tree do you most want to talk about/most love talking about?

- Show us your favorite edition(s) of The Silmarillion! Shelfies are also extremely welcome.*

- Have you ever visited somewhere that made you think, “This could be Beleriand”? We would love to see it!

- Share a favorite passage or line from The Silmarillion.

And, of course, the big question: What does The Silmarillion mean to you? Whether it was your gateway into Tolkien, the book you were nervous to tackle for years, the reason you found the PPP, an old favorite you return to again and again, or the source of a lifelong (and entirely reasonable) attachment to one particular Doomed First Age character, we want to hear about it.

*We (The PPP) accept no responsibility for anyone discovering another edition they absolutely do not need and subsequently buying it.

Our editor, Jordan Rannells, has been working on something we think is well worth sharing with the Tolkien community. He’s hoping to demonstrate to HarperCollins that there’s real interest in seeing The History of Middle-earth released in audiobook form.

For many readers, audiobooks have become an important way of experiencing Tolkien’s works, and with twelve volumes of The History of Middle-earth, there is quite a lot there to experience. Having the series available in audio form would give folks another way to return to these books, while also making them more approachable and accessible to people who might not otherwise make their way through the entire series or utilize them as a resource.

Of course, the first step is showing that people actually want them. Jordan has put together a petition to do just that, and we’d love to help him get it in front of as many Tolkien readers and listeners as possible.

If this is something you’d like to see happen, take a moment to sign, and please share it with anyone else you think might be interested. He is almost to 500 signatures! Link is in our bio.
