Designing for Impact
Lessons learned by a Pratt MID Alum ‘19

The interface of design and society is one most primed to initiate change and make an impact...but where do you start? In this discussion, Pratt MID ‘19 Alumni Garrett Benisch will share lessons learned carving a pathway toward impact before, during, and after his time at Pratt. Garrett is currently in his sixth year applying his thesis work at scale, transforming sewage sludge into a carbon-negative material for use in industry. He began a focus on design for impact as a fellow at MASS Design Group in Kigali, Rwanda, prior to his time at Pratt. A presentation by Garrett will follow an open discussion meant to aid any student looking to direct their projects toward research-based impact.

About Garret:
Garrett Benisch is Chief Development Officer at Bioforcetech Corporation, a Bay Area company turning organic waste into carbon negative materials. Garrett has been co-developing OurCarbon, Bioforcetech's flagship product made from wastewater sludge, for various markets ranging from concrete to fashion. As a municipally derived material used in industry, Garrett spends time at the intersection between public infrastructure, policy, science, and new markets.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Our first INTtalk of the Fall 2026 semester will take place TOMORROW, Tuesday, September 29th, from 12:45-1:45PM. Adjunct Professor Pierre de Looz will present Splitting Off – Writing and the Literature of Interiors LIVE in ST311 and over Zoom.

“Writing and the Literature of Interiors” is a creative writing course which aims to enrich students' ability to communicate about design to a broad audience. The lecture will provide an overview of the course and its foundation in the writerly concept of "voice." Although voice designates our ability to project language out loud, the lecture will discuss how voice is a product of writing rather than its source, splitting our experience in two across a boundary we call the interior.

Pierre Alexandre de Looz is an interdisciplinary writer, educator and designer. He is Adjunct Professor (CCE) in Humanities and Media Studies, teaches in Undergraduate Architecture and has taught in Graduate Industrial Design. Besides running an independent design practice, he has consulted on several bi-annual design publications and co-founded PIN-UP magazine on Architecture where he serves as the magazine's Editor-at-Large since 2006. He has written for a wide-range of publications such as the New York Times, Artnews, 032c and Bomb.

INTalumni - Mapa Mueller @mapamuellerdesign - MFA 18
Mapa Muller (MFA 18) is a Colombian-born interior designer whose career has been shaped by happy coincidences, bold leaps, and a deep belief that the places we inhabit shape who we become.
After earning her degree in Industrial Design in 2013, she began designing custom millwork and furniture for hospitality projects alongside architects in Bogotá. That passion brought her to New York, where she earned a Master's degree in Interior Design from Pratt Institute.
Mapa spent three years at Rockwell Group before joining hospitality management company Life House, where she helped grow the in-house design team and led boutique hotel projects from concept through opening. In 2024, she launched her own studio, where she has since led the opening of hotels and restaurants across the United States.
In 2026, Mapa is set to be honored with the “Wave of the Future” award, recognizing emerging designers, architects, brand executives, and owners whose work demonstrates exceptional vision and achievement early in their careers. She and her team remain guided by a simple belief: that good design develops slowly through listening and trust. It begins with understanding a client’s world, their guests, and the feeling they hope to create. It then takes shape through close collaboration with the craftspeople, tradespeople, and builders whose expertise brings ideas to life. In her view, the most memorable spaces are always those shaped together.

P4 - P5: Passerine, NYC, New York
P6 - P7: Belle & Grey and The Library: Whisky & Wine, Wayzata, Minnesota
P8 - P9: Hotel Albatross, Ocean Grove, New Jersey

INTalumni - Rasksha Sanikam (MFA'25), New York-based designer shared how her education and experience at Pratt helped her prepare to launch House of Santal.

House of Santal is a first-of-its-kind contemporary design space dedicated to South Asian craftsmanship, via a physical gallery and an online platform for discovery. Guided by a deep reverence for the heritage of skilled artisans of South Asia, it brings the region’s most compelling voices—both established and emerging—to the forefront of the international design stage. Sanikam’s vision is both ambitious and overdue: to champion the present-day designers, studios, and master artisans whose work has shaped global design culture, yet whose authorship has remained largely unrecognized in the United States.

House of Santal’s curatorial perspective is rooted in process, provenance, and authorship, highlighting both collectible works and exceptionally crafted design objects. Through exhibitions, commissions, and cultural programming, House of Santal creates new pathways for exchange between South Asia and the international design stage. Its physical gallery and online platform offer collectors, architects, and design patrons access to distinctive works, ranging from limited-edition and made-to-order pieces to thoughtfully designed objects defined by quality, materiality, and intent.

DIFFA GALA Installation - 2026

We are pleased to share our installation for DIFFA gala 2026.
Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA) raises awareness and grants funds to not only HIV/AIDS but also broader health and social issues. This year’s fundraising gala, themed “Angels & Demons”, was held on the evening of March 19 at Cathedral of St. John the Divine.

The concept of the installation: Reflections and Duality
This installation acts as a reflection of one's perceptions of angels and demons, and their inseparable duality. Here, the fragility of moral oppositions are exposed; untouched they appear distinct but when confronted they bleed into each other.

Jon Otis

Congratulations to Alvin You, BFA 26, the recipient of the 2025 Gensler Brinkmann Scholarship! He shares the scholarship-winning project and his personal design philosophy in this post.
Growing up in Vancouver, studying in New York, and spending summers in China, Alvin had the chance to experience many cities and cultures. Seeing how design can influence people and how those experiences can live with us for a long time, Alvin decided to create spaces that leave an impression, and quietly stay with people long after they’ve left them.

We are excited to share Alvin’s story. Full article and video in bio.
