Join us on Oct. 6 from 12:00 - 1:30 pm in
Pratt Studios 401 for a talk by Garrett Benisch.

Designing for Impact
Lessons learned by a Pratt MID Alum ‘19

The interface of design and society is one most primed to initiate change and make an impact...but where do you start? In this discussion, Pratt MID ‘19 Alumni Garrett Benisch will share lessons learned carving a pathway toward impact before, during, and after his time at Pratt. Garrett is currently in his sixth year applying his thesis work at scale, transforming sewage sludge into a carbon-negative material for use in industry. He began a focus on design for impact as a fellow at MASS Design Group in Kigali, Rwanda, prior to his time at Pratt. A presentation by Garrett will follow an open discussion meant to aid any student looking to direct their projects toward research-based impact.

About Garret:
Garrett Benisch is Chief Development Officer at Bioforcetech Corporation, a Bay Area company turning organic waste into carbon negative materials. Garrett has been co-developing OurCarbon, Bioforcetech's flagship product made from wastewater sludge, for various markets ranging from concrete to fashion. As a municipally derived material used in industry, Garrett spends time at the intersection between public infrastructure, policy, science, and new markets.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Today is a sad day. I saw the second tower fall from 17th floor of the Starrett Lehigh building on West 26th Street where I had a studio. On March 4, 2001 the New York Times published an article about artists who appropriated the World Trade Center. #worldtradecentermemorial #worldtradecenter

It's back to school! In that spirit I want to share a recent family memory, sharing my alma mater with Paloma. I love that grad school helped to shape me to understand methodologies within creativity. It connected me with a network of amazing people and friends for life, two of whom I had a girl's weekend with in VT last weekend. @prattinteriors gave me a Masters of Science in Interior Design which allowed me to not only found a business but also teach full and part time for many years.

WHAT IS NOT,

An experiment shaped by the questions of @allanwexlerstudio

Some encounters quietly change the way you see. Learning from Allan has definitely been one of them.

We're back in Chicago after a nice summer working remotely in Vermont. I was born in Chicago but grew up in VT and it was so good to be home! Looking forward to finishing July and kicking off August in CHI!

Surreal to see our SoD Co-Design Studio recognized among the 2026 NYCxDESIGN Honorees and Award recipients. Thank you to Interior Design Magazine for recognizing the impact of community-engaged design, and to El Puente Academy for your enduring partnership.

Co-design doesn’t end with installation, it lives on through programming, activation, and adaptation by our community partners who reimagine the project to fit the needs of their every day lives.

Today we are thrilled to officially launch The Dock at @dockstreetschool as part of their ribbon cutting and culminating celebration. Current Dock Street students, former @pratt_sod_codesign grads, faculty, staff, and parents came together for this important project milestone- a true testament to the power of youth-led community design! ✨
