The Soap Bubble Trope: Throughout the history of philosophy, literature, art, and science, people have been fascinated with the shimmering surfaces of soap bubbles.

Far from being objects that just feed our natural proclivities toward shiny and shimmering surfaces, bubbles are a recurring trope in the history of philosophy, literature, the arts, and science. “Make a soap bubble and observe it; you could spend a whole life studying it,” Sir William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, allegedly said in the late nineteenth century.

Interest in bubbles in the arts, literature, and sciences reached a high point in the seventeenth century, when they became closely associated with the concept of vanitas vanitatum, the fragility and transience of human life. Homo bulla (man is a bubble) was a concept dear to the baroque era.

A bubble becomes a conceit that allows for the conceptualization of other things, of fictionality. As the literary scholar Kareem writes:
The bubble’s liminal status, materially between water and air, spatially between ground and sky, temporally between inflation and bursting, parallels fiction’s own boundary-crossing nature, making the bubble uniquely suited to metaphorically rendering the temporary transport fiction provides.

Towards the end of the seventeenth century, scientists latched onto the subject of bubbles as well. “It is probably not insignificant that this same period saw soap bubbles achieve their greatest fame as a subject for painting,” Emmer (the mathematician) writes. “It is thus likely that children’s games and works of art stimulated scientists to try to understand the workings of these phenomena that were attractive and entertaining.

Ask a solid-state physicist to name the biggest discovery in the field over the past 50 years, and chances are the answer – if not high-temperature superconductivity – will be topological materials. These are materials in which bulk properties determine special behavior along the surface or an edge, and they have profoundly changed the study of electrons in solids – as recognized by three Nobel prizes.

CORALISE | @jessicakategregory is an incredibly talented biodesigner who creates products and biomaterials from, or inspired by, nature. The materials she creates organically evolve, creating ongoing interest and providing natural solutions to environmental issues.

Gregory graduated from the @royalcollegeofart in 2018, but Pratt was lucky to have her for a GID Semester. The project featured here is Coralise and it aims to reduce juvenile coral mortality (99%). The substrates are a unique ceramic material made of calcium carbonate from coral skeletons.

The carefully designed 3D-printed organic forms, in combination with the material, attract coral larvae. The pattern on the product replicates the corallite structures created as coral grows its skeleton, thus protecting juveniles in developmental stages. These objects were created for lab research and revitalizing ocean reefs. How cool!

REMIX EL BARRIO @circularbarris | a collaboration between Anastasia Pistofidou, Marion Real, Fab Lab Barcelona @fabtextiles, and the Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia @iaacbcn

This awesome project identified food waste streams in the Barcelona neighborhood of Poblenou and worked with local restaurants to turn this waste into different materials.

Can YOU guess the various food waste feedstocks for these bio materials?

Bees are joining us on Governors Island, are you? 'Communicating Climate Science through the Arts' is a free workshop at Governors Island on July 12th - 13th from 10am - 4pm. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until July 1st!
.
Pollinators Pavillion is an artificially-intelligent constructed habitat for native bees helping to promote biodiversity. Using machine learning, the pavilion communicates data harvested from its monitoring system, addressing the gap in scientific knowledge on native bees. Created by Pratt’s School of Architecture professor, Ariane Harrison, and the Harrison Atelier team, Seth Harrison and Pratt graduate Yuxiang Chen, the pavilion will also introduce these overlooked yet critical pollinators to the broad public.

The project is a place to observe how what we eat is produced while promoting environmentally sustainable agriculture. It includes oyster farming, integrated laboratories and algae facilities, and livestock animals which use the land and supplement the anaerobic digester. The anaerobic digester receives food waste from the surrounding neighborhood, returning it back as usable electricity in an educational demonstration of using existing ecological systems to support industry and to embrace the negative externalities of Industry City to encourage sustainable systems.
