Pratt Earth Action Week (PEAW) Fall 2025, running October 20–25, 2025 is a week-long celebration of the innovative and impactful sustainability work happening across our community of artists, designers, and architects. Through exhibitions, workshops, panels, and design interventions, PEAW highlights how creative practice drives solutions to today’s environmental and social challenges.

Join us on Friday, October 24, for A Look Inside Soil First Aid, an interactive session exploring the relationship between soil, public health, and ecological resilience. This project is led by Sam Asher, a graduate student in the MS in Sustainable Environmental Systems program and recipient of a STEAMplant grant, alongside Tony Gelber, Director of Administrative Sustainability in Pratt Facilities, with the support of the Pratt Textile Dye Garden.

Soil First Aid investigates soil health, quality, and carbon sequestration capacity within the Dye Garden using interdisciplinary methods that bridge science, design, and community collaboration. The event will feature a tour of test sites, hands-on soil testing demonstrations, and displays of soil chromatograms and jar tests developed through the project—all highlighting how urban soil care contributes to climate adaptation and resilience.

📍 Pratt Dye Garden | Cannoneer Court, Brooklyn, NY

NYC summers are already hot and getting hotter; it is imperative that we design cities that are livable for everyone.

Join North Brooklyn Parks Alliance and Pratt Institute’s MS in Sustainable Environmental Systems program to discover how city features—from the material used to pave a street to the paint color chosen for a wall—impact the microclimates we experience on just one neighborhood block.

Saturday, September 27th
12:00pm-2:00pm EDT
Msgr. McGolrick Park
Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY

Registration required via the link in bio!

On this guided walk in and around McGolrick Park in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, we will measure and sense urban heat perceptions and reflect on how to design a habitable city for human and non-human residents. We will also explore how McGolrick Park’s tree canopy can support community wellbeing now and in the future. Participants will gain hands-on experience with thermal comfort assessment techniques.

This walkshop is offered in conjunction with a Taconic Fellowship grant from the Pratt Center for Community Development.
