One of the best ways to explore a city is through it’s local book shops and the unique stories they tell.

This little shop in Madrid, Spain hosts book readings, gallery shows, lectures and more. The owner spoke about his experience working 8 years in the famous paris bookshop- Shakespeare & Company, before he decided to open his own store and the influence is apparent as you walk in the door. @desperateliterature

Told in a comic strip format, Persepolis is an autobiography that follows the life of a young Marjane in war-stricken Iran. The backdrop highlights social & cultural transformations that take place during a turbulent political change. Despite the preamble, the book isn’t tragic and in fact incorporates plenty moments of humour and triumph. The pictures are simple yet powerful and the book moves at a fast pace, making it a quick and poignant read.

Here’s an attempt to start a virtual bookclub and a digital diary of my literary world- a parallel that helps me make sense of the real one.
From fairytales to scholastic fairs to self help books to guilty pleasures- my journey of reading has been one of clarity and chaos.

Walk with me (or stumble along) as i tread the line between materialism & make believe.

An interpretation of The Iliad, The song of Achilles is an excellent introduction to Greek mythology. The story of Achilles’ rise and fall, told from the perspective of his speculated lover, Patroclus, the writing is well paced, racy, nuanced and dramatic. Love a good retelling of the classics (especially one told from an unexpected pov). Madeline Miller brings novelty and emotion to a story we think we already know.
Highly recommend!

A book i was worried about finishing (700+ pages) but instead the book finished me šŸ’€ Excruciatingly beautiful writing, complex syntax and an almost-unbearably tragic plotline makes this an arduous read. Although i dissociated midway and the trauma-heavy storyline felt repetitive at times, i finisht the book feeling absolutely despondent but relieved. Tackling issues like race, disability, mental illness etc, i kept hoping it gets better for the characters but spoiler alert: it does not.
Wouldn’t easily recommend it to just anyone and to anyone who has read it: are u ok??

ā€œEven if there is only one possible unified theory, it is just a set of rules and equations. What is it that breathes fire into the equations and makes a universe for them to describe? The usual approach of science of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the questions of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existingā€

This might be a hot take but i found this book to be just above average, and not to sound smug but i guessed the murderer midway. Good writing (simple & lucid) in terms of the time-warp setting and red herring characters. Burned through the book in a day- definitely a page turner but didn’t quite live up to the hype. Would still recommend it for a quick read while travelling. December is for curling up with hot chocolate & a whodunnit!

177 years old, a mere 100 pages, still going viral in 2025. This book is def having a moment because it accurately captures modern loneliness and idle idealisation. Dostoevsky’s writing style- dragging but lucid- much like his love Nastenka- leaves a wistful aftertaste in the mind of the writer. Occasionally a two-page long monologue or a hundred word description of a streetlamp may dampen the plot for some, but if you can persist, the book is painfully gorgeous.

Yellowface by R.F.Kuang was definitely an interesting read. My first time navigating a book from the villain’s pov and as frustrating as it was being inside June’s head, the writing is provocative, hilarious and insufferable. The satirical book gets annoying at times as the premise seems far-fetched & melodramatic yet its a hard one to put down, almost like a bad accident you can’t look away fromšŸ˜…

RFK attempts to tackle serious subjects like racism, social media fame, power dynamics in the publishing industry and SA with some tenacity but ultimately falls a bit flat.

Would give it a 3.5/5 āļø

Whereabouts by Jhumpa Lahiri.
A sublime narrative derived from this Pulitzer-winning author’s skill at finding significance in life’s minutiae. I read this book on a short vacation & enjoyed it immensely. Not much happens in the book plot-wise, yet the minimalistic & musical writing style invokes a great deal of reflection in the mind of the reader. Everyday musings written in the most elegant & beautiful manner. A poetic & breezy quick read…
