[The] result was terrible to the enemy. They could do us little harm, and we were shooting them like sheep in a pen….The dead and wounded were a horrible sight to behold. This sunken road, …was a good many yards long, and for most of the way, there were enough dead and badly wounded to touch one another as they lay side by side. As we found them in some cases, they were two and three deep.

The Emancipation Proclamation, or Proclamation 95, was a presidential proclamation and executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln on this day in 1862, during the Civil War. The Proclamation read:

That on the first day of January in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom.

The Proclamation changed the legal status under federal law of more than 3.5 million enslaved African Americans in the secessionist Confederate states from slave to free. As soon as a slave escaped the control of the Confederate government, either by running away across Union lines or through the advance of federal troops, the slave was permanently free. Ultimately, the Union victory brought the proclamation into effect in all of the former Confederacy. #otd #abrahamlincoln #proclamation95 #emancipationproclamation #executiveorder 🇺🇸 by @preservation_captures

Today marks the 164th anniversary of the battle of Antietam.

Antietam is only 70 miles from Washington, but it’s off the tourist track, away from the interstates, tucked into the beautiful hills of western Maryland. It’s not a place you stumble upon by accident. People tend to come to Antietam in search of something — a fallen ancestor, a glimpse of history, a place to contemplate their country. They find a field, a sunken dirt road, an old stone bridge, a tiny white church — all of them haunted by an air of tragedy so palpable that it compels almost everyone to whisper, as if they were visiting a cathedral.

They stand silently, gazing out at the swaying grass of the Cornfield. Ask them what they’re thinking and nearly all of them repeat some variation of the same three questions:
How could they have done it?
Could we do it today?
Could I?

Today's #VirginiaCities feature: The Stonewall Jackson monument at Manassas National Battlefield Park by @preservation_captures

📍 Stonewall Jackson Statue, Manassas National Battlefield Park, VA

A quiet monument on a historic field. 🗿

✨ Did you know?

👉 The nickname "Stonewall" was born right here at the First Battle of Manassas in July 1861, when a fellow officer reportedly pointed to Jackson holding his ground and said, "There stands Jackson like a stone wall"

👉 This bronze statue was sculpted by New York artist Joseph Pollia, who won a nationwide competition sponsored by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

👉 It was dedicated on the battlefield on August 31, 1940, and unveiled by Jackson's own great-granddaughter

👉 The monument sits on Henry Hill, part of the Manassas National Battlefield Park, which preserves the site of two major Civil War battles

A statue with a story, standing on a field with an even longer one. 🏞️

Robert E. Lee’s 1862 Maryland Campaign, which began on this day—Sept. 4th, was a pivotal moment of the Civil War that ended with the Battle of Antietam—the single bloodiest day in U.S. history. Lee’s invasion ultimately failed, prompting President Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation.

After a series of victories in Virginia, Lee led his Army of Northern Virginia into Maryland in September 1862 with several key objectives:
Pressure the North, Relieve Virginia, Gather supplies and
Gain foreign support: A decisive victory on Union soil might convince European powers like Great Britain and France to recognize the Confederacy as an independent nation.

In response to Lee’s invasion, President Lincoln placed Major General George B. McClellan in command of the Army of the Potomac and tasked him with pursuing the Confederates.
On September 9, Lee gambled by dividing his army. He sent a portion of his troops, led by Maj. Gen. “Stonewall” Jackson, to capture the Union garrison at Harpers Ferry, which threatened his supply and communication lines through the Shenandoah Valley.

The Confederate plan was compromised when Union soldiers discovered a mislaid copy of Lee’s orders (Special Order 191) on September 13. Aware that Lee’s army was divided and vulnerable, McClellan began a more aggressive advance.

The campaign culminated in the Battle of Antietam (also known as Sharpsburg) on September 17, 1862. The battle is remembered as the bloodiest single day in American military history, with over 22,000 casualties. The battle was a tactical draw, but it resulted in a strategic Union victory because Lee was forced to withdraw his battered army back to Virginia, ending his invasion. Following the retreat, Lincoln used the Union victory to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22. This declaration redefined the war’s purpose to include ending slavery and ended any chance of European recognition for the Confederacy. #otd #marylandcampaign #battleofantietam #uscivilwar #civilwarhistory taken in Antietam National Battlefield by @preservation_captures
