On Saturday, October 25, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln, annoyed with General George McClellan’s excuses for procrastination after Antietam, wired McClellan, noting “I have just read your dispatch about sore tongued and fatiegued [sic] horses. Will you pardon me for asking what the horses of your army have done since the battle of Antietam that fatigue anything?”

McClellan in response defended his cavalry’s inability to stop Stuart’s ride around his army and pointed out the various reconnaissances in force and raids that his army had conducted. But once again, the commander of the Army of the Potomac made excuses to his boss, the commander-in-chief of the Northern military. How long would Lincoln continue to accept McClellan’s excuses? And how long would McClellan keep his large and well-equipped army out of the field? Lincoln replaced McClellan with Ambrose Burnside a little over a week later. #otd #abrahamlincoln #uspresident #georgemcclellan #uniongeneral

The Battle of Ball’s Bluff, which took place on this day in 1861, was a significant early engagement of the Civil War. It resulted in a devastating defeat for Union troops and led to the death of Colonel Edward D. Baker, a close friend of President Abraham Lincoln. Baker was a sitting U.S. Senator from Oregon at the time, making him the only U.S. Senator ever killed in a military engagement. The political fallout from the battle and Baker’s death led to the creation of the Joint Committee on the Conduct of the War, a congressional body established to investigate Union defeats. #otd #battleofballsbluff #death #edwarddbaker #friendoflincoln

Union General Philip Sheridan averts a near disaster in the Shenandoah Valley when he rallies his troops after a surprise attack by Confederate General Jubal Early and scores a major victory that almost destroys Early’s army at the Battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia on this day in 1864.

Through the summer of 1864, Early moved his army with impunity around the Shenandoah and its surrounding area. Union General-in-Chief Ulysses S. Grant dispatched Sheridan to take care of Early’s army, which was distracting Grant and preventing him from applying the full pressure of the Union army against the forces of Robert E. Lee around Petersburg, Virginia. Sheridan performed his task well, defeating Early at Winchester, Fischer’s Hill, and Tom’s Brook.

By mid-October, Sheridan’s troops were busy destroying the rich harvest of the Shenandoah to deny food supplies to Lee’s army. Sheridan departed for a military conference in Washington, D.C., and before he returned, Early launched a devastating attack on the surprised Yankees at Cedar Creek. Throughout the morning of October 19, the Rebels drove the Union troops back more than three miles. By late morning, Early slowed the attack despite the urgings of General John B. Gordon, who insisted that Early press his assault to achieve total destruction of the Federal force.

Returning from Washington, Sheridan heard the battle from Winchester and began a furious, 12-mile ride to the front. Along the way, he met his retreating soldiers and turned them back toward the battle for a counterattack. This effort, which was later called Sheridan’s Ride, became legendary. After Early cut off his assault, an eerie silence settled on the battlefield. Sheridan orchestrated his counterattack by late afternoon, and it was devastating. The Yankees tore through the Confederate lines and sent Early’s army in retreat. Sheridan lost 5,500 out of 31,000 troops. Early lost almost 3,000 of the 22,000 men in his command, but nearly all of the Confederate artillery was captured in the Union counterattack. It was the last major battle in the Shenandoah campaign, and Early was never able to mount a serious offensive again. #onthisday #battleofcedarcreek

General George Meade refused to restore General Daniel Sickles to command of the Third Corps on this day in 1863 because of Sickles’ unauthorized and disastrous movement of the corps on July 2, 1863, at the Battle of Gettysburg. Sickles advanced his corps to an indefensible position at the Peach Orchard, which resulted in devastating casualties, the near-destruction of his corps, and his own severe wounding. Despite Sickles’ testimony and political efforts to have his actions vindicated, Meade remained firm in his decision.

Why Meade refused to restore Sickles:
* Unauthorized movement: Sickles advanced his Third Corps to the Peach Orchard, ignoring Meade’s orders to hold a defensive position on Cemetery Ridge.

* Strategic blunder: Sickles’ new position was a salient, vulnerable to attack from multiple sides, and left the crucial high ground of Little Round Top undefended.

* Heavy casualties: The resulting fighting was devastating, leading to the near-destruction of the Third Corps and a staggering number of casualties.

* Sickles’ injury: Sickles was severely wounded during the battle, with his right leg being shattered by a cannonball and later amputated.

* Meade’s opposition: Meade viewed Sickles’ actions as a costly mistake that nearly cost the Union the battle and was determined to hold him accountable, refusing to restore him to command despite Sickles’ public and political efforts to clear his name. #otd #georgemeade #uscivilwar #danielsickles #uniongenerals

In October 1859, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on a federal armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia, with the goal of starting a slave uprising. His group, consisting of 21 followers, successfully captured the armory but were quickly surrounded by local militia and later defeated by U.S. Marines led by Colonel Robert E. Lee. The raid failed to ignite a large-scale rebellion, but it intensified national tensions over slavery and propelled the nation closer to the Civil War.

Brown’s plan was to seize weapons from the armory to arm enslaved people and spark a widespread slave rebellion across the South. On the night of October 16, Brown and his men captured the arsenal, armory, and rifle works, and took hostages. By the next morning, they were trapped in the armory’s engine house by local forces. The raid ended when U.S. Marines stormed the engine house, killing many of Brown’s men and capturing him. Brown was tried for treason, murder, and slave insurrection, convicted, and executed by hanging on December 2, 1859. Although the raid was a military failure, it had a profound impact. It deepened the divide between the North and South, with many abolitionists hailing Brown as a martyr and southerners fearing further slave insurrections. #johnbrown #abolitionist #harpersferry #civilwarhistory #civilwar

The Emancipation Proclamation, or Proclamation 95, was a presidential proclamation and executive order issued by United States President Abraham Lincoln on this day in 1862, during the Civil War. The Proclamation read:

That on the first day of January in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the executive government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom.

The Proclamation changed the legal status under federal law of more than 3.5 million enslaved African Americans in the secessionist Confederate states from slave to free. As soon as a slave escaped the control of the Confederate government, either by running away across Union lines or through the advance of federal troops, the slave was permanently free. Ultimately, the Union victory brought the proclamation into effect in all of the former Confederacy. #otd #abrahamlincoln #proclamation95 #emancipationproclamation #executiveorder 🇺🇸

Did you ever wonder how the gates of Charleston were made and how much they cost when built? The picture you see is a segment of the carriage lane entrance gates at 10 Legare Street in Charleston. They are attributed to Christopher Werner and are original to the 1857 home. The entire gate is about 10 ft wide and 7 feet tall and probably weighs 700 to 1000 lbs.

This gate would have been built in flat structural stages first the outer frame and then hand drawing, heating, and mandrel-bending the harp many Harp and Scroll flourishes. Finally, each individual scroll had to be bound to the next seamlessly through forge welding and hot driven pins.

In a master blacksmith shop like Werner's if he had a team of 3 blacksmiths exclusively working on this gate it would have taken 4 to 6 weeks to hammer it out, assemble and then clear coat the wrought Iron before transporting it to Legare Street for installation. In 1857 the gate cost would have been between $150 and $200 which would equate to about $7500.00 today.

A testament to thee value of the gates in Charleston is that this home just recently sold for 13.5 million dollars. The next time you snap a shot of a gate or just walk by one think how much workmanship, time and value they are to The Holy City. Do you like Charleston's gates?

Did you know a piece of the World Trade Center rests right here in Mount Pleasant?

In 2022, Mount Pleasant Town Councilman Gary Santos teamed up with retired NYC first responders living locally to request a piece of Ground Zero history. Alongside Mount Pleasant’s police and fire chiefs, they reached out to the FDNY—and received a section of an I-beam from the North Tower.

The FDNY’s only condition? It had to be installed low enough for the public to touch, allowing visitors to connect with history while the oils from passing hands naturally keep the steel polished over time.

📍 Visit the 9/11 Memorial at Mount Pleasant Waterfront Memorial Park.

It was donated by the FDNY as long as it was installed at ground level so the oils from peoples hands touching it would keep it polished so it's light would shine forever in rememberance.

Captured on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at Isaac Remba St 10 in Tel Aviv-Yafo, Israel, this photograph showcases a grand floral installation inside an immersive, illuminated pavilion.

At the heart of the image lies a raised circular platform intricately patterned with a dense mosaic of fresh, vibrant flowers arranged in a geometric checkerboard style. The floral carpet displays alternating patches of deep purple, vivid magenta, soft pink, canary yellow, light cream, and lush emerald-green chrysanthemums, carnations, and greenery.

Rising majestically from the center of this carpet is a stylized, three-dimensional sculpture of a peacock. Its vertical neck and head are densely layered with small pink and purple blossoms, while its extravagant, fan-like tail drapes downwards over the platform, composed of cascading layers of bright magenta petals.

At the front right base of the display, textured mounds of white, moss-like foliage and drooping orchid vines spill outwards, casting a luminous glow under the intense purple and UV light.

The background wall serves as a projection screen displaying a digital visual art piece depicting a peacock with expansive, multi-eyed feathers rendered in psychedelic shades of green, turquoise, gold, red, and blue. The projection blends into the ambient darkness of the dimly lit exhibition hall, creating a seamless connection between the physical floral craft and the digital light installation.

Surrounding the central installation is a protective black velvet rope boundary suspended on stainless steel stanchions. Behind the barricade, several visitors stroll around the gallery floor, observing the artwork, taking photographs, and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere.

The dark ceiling is equipped with industrial lighting rigs, adding contrast to the bright neon glow of the exhibition floor.

This photograph captures the creative intersection between natural beauty and digital art, offering a mesmerizing glimpse into Tel Aviv's contemporary cultural and exhibition scene. The vivid lighting, harmonious color palette, and intricate details make it a striking visual experience.
