is it mutual aid or is charity? 👀 📰sourced from @readlux — one of my fav independent magazines right now! by @pressingstories

EDIT ‼️ Their website is journalsafar dot com! 🌀 Go support!! Showcasing a new series highlighting stories from independent magazines from around the world. This one is @journalsafar, based in Beirut 🇱🇧, that showcases cultural artistry + stories across the global south. Their issue, “Protests,” teaches us the multi-faceted nature of this fundamental human right. Independent magazines are for the most part — 100% people and grassroots powered, require less bureaucracy hurdles to publish, and don’t rely on big tech to get their stories read and heard. ➡️ Follow @pressingstories for junk journaling + independent magazine review 🌀 by @pressingstories
“Politics don’t belong in my cozy junk journaling hobby” Staying complicit & silent about genocide, terrorists ICE, and the atrocities that empire continues to commit because “I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable” isn’t the excuse you think it is. Not to mention, I’ve recently discovered that a LOT of the junk journaling community are literal zios and right wingers 🤮 Art has always been political, and if you can’t connect your own art to the importance of this moment, then your hobby is meaningless and empty. by @pressingstories
Starting a new series highlighting stories from independent magazines (because independent paper media is how we build narrative power) 🌎 This one is from @journalsafar, a visual culture magazine based in Beirut 🇱🇧 that showcases stories by writers across the global south. This article, “Messy Money” was written by @eliaserkan + @bettinalauraen. Pick up your copy from their site! ➡️ Follow @pressingstories for junk journaling + independent magazine review — our next event is in Feb @heretosunday (details soon ꩜) by @pressingstories
Our political junk journaling gathering = having convos about the state of the world, channeling our feelings through crafting, and leaving with tangible anti-🧊resources. Junk journaling kits consisted of @justseeds and @winsorkinkade_’s free non-commercial art, @the_ilrc “know your rights” cards, and @shadowbannedmagazine’s issues ✂️ This event was offered through @shadowbannedmagazine’s Cultural Workers Lab program — we really need more of us out here creating IRL spaces. Shoutout to @publicassistants for their community space! Check it out and apply! ✨ by @pressingstories
Combatting AI & the hyper-digital age by showing you artist-made zines from around the world 🌎 These are zines I bought from @the.pond.cph, a queer bookstore & community space in Copenhagen 🇩🇰 📣 NYC !!! Come to our junk journaling event with @shadowbannedmagazine on Jan 10th @publicassistants!!! All supplies included — 🎟️ in bio! by @pressingstories
currently sitting in this painful cycle of needing rest, knowing that rest is a privilege, knowing im never doing enough, and trying to do it all. blah. 💓 @pressingstories is my new junk journaling account. I’ve been doing this offline for the past year now and im finally putting more content out here as a way to build community. I’m looking to host junk journaling events in NYC — so if you’d like to host, sponsor, help, etc plz let me know ✂️ 🎀 stickers used: @little.gaze @stickiiclub @merlemail by @pressingstories
Art IS political and has always been used as a tool for community reflection. All proceeds from this event @grandstreethealing were donated to mutual aid for 🇵🇸 evacuees in Egypt (donate — 🔗 in bio) Right now, Palestinians in Gaza are experiencing severe flooding in the midst of ongoing g*noside — please donate to @thesameerproject 🇵🇸 ✂️I’m wanting to host more mutual aid focused collaging and junk journaling events in NYC - if you’re someone who’d like to sponsor, host, help, etc, dm @pressingstories (my new junk journaling account!)💓 by @pressingstories
Check out @commonroomph (I think they ship internationally too 🌎)They have several locations in Metro Manila & have so many stickers, jewelry, books, zines, and more by local 🇵🇭 artists. Through their art, we can connect the dots on how interconnected our struggles are. ✨Artists mentioned: @pinaycollection @mako.micropress @commonroomph @ugnayancards @sikodiwa @popjunklove by @pressingstories
Being an immigrant is a constant mind fuck. I am the first person in my entire family to have moved to the US as a toddler, gone to school here, and attained all of the systemic struggles and benefits of living in the west, while also knowing very well I’ll never actually “belong” here. I went to a concert 2 weeks ago and a yt woman stood right by me and said, “are you ill3gal?” 😒🥊 Then I go back home to the 🇵🇭 and it’s almost an entirely different experience — Everyone looks like me. I get to experience non-capitalist community care. I feel rooted and at home in ways I have never experienced in the US. I explain racism by yt people to my cousins, always hoping deep down they’ll never have to experience it. But it’s also a giant reckoning because it is VERY obvious that you unjustly benefit from colonial empire. All of that to say, learning about my Filipino culture & de-colonial spirituality is so important for me. I found out about @ugnayancards during my last trip home, and it feels like a tool for connecting to that liminal, in-between space — whether you’re Filipino or not, check them out & DM them to order!❤️‍🔥 Edit: 96 questions (not cards)! by @pressingstories
