In this introductory class, we will explore Soundpainting, an interdisciplinary composing sign language created by Walter Thompson. Originally developed as a way to shape large ensemble improvised music groups in New York’s downtown scene, Soundpainting has gradually grown into a large and internationally used system of hand signs for creating spontaneous compositions with musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists. In this workshop, we will learn basic signs to construct layered compositions in real time using the improvisational offerings from the ensemble as our building blocks. Our approach will be hands-on, practical, and flexible, and all participants will act as both performers and composers/Soundpainters.

About the instructor

Sam Day Harmet is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser, producer, and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. A musician of diverse tastes, Sam's projects range from deconstructive folk and jazz, to free improvisation, to left field electronic music, to Soundpainting and beyond. He has performed in Soundpainting groups with Walter Thompson for over 15 years in the US, UK, France, and Spain. His own Sam Day Harmet Soundpainting Collective frequently performs in experimental arts spaces around New York. by @prettymuchsamday

💥 New remix out from @bad_conditions 💥

Bad Conditions utilizes scattered found sounds and drum-machine grooves when dismantling “Bailando Con Mi Oscuridad,” the band’s meditation on dancing through the pain of a breakup and eventually finding clarity in the shadows. Olivier Conan (Chicha Libre) contributed cuatro to the original recording, and in the remix the instrument emerges from the shadows to take on a new life of its own.

Pedro Erazo x La Banda Chuska remix is out now!!!

Originally conceived as a playful cumbia-surf ode to New York City’s most resilient residents, “Ratas y Mapaches” celebrates rats and raccoons as the true kings and queens of the concrete jungle. Built around dueling Farfisa and accordion melodies, twangy surf guitars, vintage Rhodes textures, and theremin-like synths, the original balances tropical grooves with punk irreverence, transforming urban decay into an irresistible dance party.

Pedro Erazo’s remix flips that world upside down. Trading the original’s sunny swagger for crushing bass, ominous atmospheres, and cinematic tension, the track plunges into a dystopian landscape where the city’s beloved scavengers have inherited the earth. Massive dubstep drops, distorted textures, and haunting sound design transform the whimsical anthem into a soundtrack for the end times while preserving fragments of the original’s infectious melodies beneath the chaos. The result is equal parts dancefloor destroyer and post-apocalyptic fever dream. by @prettymuchsamday

THINKTANK RECAP DAY 1: An Inside Look

✨ Day 1 at the 28th International Soundpainting Thinktank was all about getting curious. Hosted by @powerhouse_thtr at Vassar, Soundpainters from around the world came together to reconnect with the language, challenge old habits, and start building something new.

🌱 We kicked things off with Walter’s “Sandbox,” where Walter Thompson shared the stories and thinking behind the Soundpainting language, offering extra context on where key signs came from, how they’re used, and how to sign them with greater clarity.

💬 Then came Open Space where participants had the opportunity to propose additional sessions of interest to them. A session might explore new applications of Soundpainting, unpack specific signs, and continue conversations around the ideas that excited them most.

🧠 Audrey Vallarino’s “Inner Questions of a Soundpainter”deeply explored methods of composing, practicing, and preparing with ensembles of all types, while remaining true to the spirit of Soundpainting. (Interested? You can watch the livestream replay now ▶️ Link in bio!)

🎥🎛️ In “Creative Sampling,” Sam Harmet @prettymuchsamday introduced participants to using a sampler as part of a Soundpainting. Everyone recorded their own sounds on a mobile app, then brought those recordings into live compositions, discovering entirely new textures they could conduct and shape in real time.

🎭 Rafaële Arditti @rafaelearditti then flipped familiar habits on their heads, using creative constraints on body, voice, and speech to reveal new ways of performing, listening, and responding.

🚗 We ended the evening with Walter Thompson’s “Parking Lot,” where everyone reflected on the day’s discoveries, surfaced new questions, and helped shape what was still to come.

🚀 And that was only Day 1! Follow along as we continue taking you behind the scenes of this unforgettable week at @vassarcollege.
