Towards the new ways of being

$15 to 30
14 person participant cap.
Advance tickets highly recommended

In this introductory class, we will explore Soundpainting, an interdisciplinary composing sign language created by Walter Thompson. Originally developed as a way to shape large ensemble improvised music groups in New York’s downtown scene, Soundpainting has gradually grown into a large and internationally used system of hand signs for creating spontaneous compositions with musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists. In this workshop, we will learn basic signs to construct layered compositions in real time using the improvisational offerings from the ensemble as our building blocks. Our approach will be hands-on, practical, and flexible, and all participants will act as both performers and composers/Soundpainters.

About the instructor

Sam Day Harmet is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser, producer, and educator based in Brooklyn, NY. A musician of diverse tastes, Sam's projects range from deconstructive folk and jazz, to free improvisation, to left field electronic music, to Soundpainting and beyond. He has performed in Soundpainting groups with Walter Thompson for over 15 years in the US, UK, France, and Spain. His own Sam Day Harmet Soundpainting Collective frequently performs in experimental arts spaces around New York.

As Rabbi Ellen Lippmann said, we hate that we had to do this ritual for the third year in a row. And yet here we are. Another year of genocide, bombing, engineered famine, and even worse escalation of settler violence in Palestine.

“We gathered for Yizkor to remember, because we believe in life. Because we know memory is an act of resistance to complacency. Because we are bonded to others in a sacred chain of responsibility. We cannot make a ritual that undoes what has been done, but we can bear what feels unbearable, together - and let it continue to move us to keep fighting for a free Palestine.”

I’m honored to song lead for and be in community with @rabbis4ceasefire @jfrejnyc @kolotchayeinu and our comrades.

Grateful for our ritual band @avi_fox_rosen_music @nogodsnohorsegirls @emma_alabaster @willafair @prettymuchsamday @eleonoreweill and all the incredible rabbis, speakers, and everyone who showed up.

“Our Yizkor weaves together traditional Jewish practies of grief and mourning with our obligation to atone for the sins of genocide and ethnic cleansing. Through this public ritual we embody Judaism at its most liberatory, in loving solidarity with Palestinians and all oppressed people.”

Hana Masud shared the torment and violence her family and village of Al Mughayyir, Ramallah experience at the hands of the IDF and Israeli settlers. She pleas for Jews to come to Palestine to be conscious observers and help document and protect them.

In 1983, three young artists wanted to make theater together.

They wanted a place to create, experiment and play.
So they decided to start one. And the Irondale Ensemble Project was born.

Against all odds, here we are 43 years later.
And we’re still experimenting.
Asking questions and learning by doing.

But now there’s another generation in the room.
And they have their own questions.

Irondale NextGen - Where a new generation puts Irondale’s practice into play.

A shared practice. New voices. Work we haven’t seen yet.

Stay tuned for more!
