11 years ago, I received a Letter of Appreciation from The White House for my social work contributions. Later, as an Alumni Instructor, I proudly led YES student groups to see The White House, and I captured each visit by extending my phone through the fence. Little did I know what lay beyond. In 2020, coincidentally on my birthday, I received an invitation to speak at a virtual panel organized by The White House and UNDP about Awareness 360 and my role as a Generation17 Young Leader. Fast forward to 2023, I was chosen as a McCain Global Leader and invited to The White House, not once, but twice in a single week. Stepping past the barricade felt surreal. Attending the iconic White House Press Briefing, an experience of a lifetime, I soaked in the energy of the room, my heart bursting with gratitude. But it didn't end there. I found myself seated at a meeting with the US National Security Council, where I fearlessly voiced our nation's priorities and concerns.

Going to The White House was never my dream. However, standing in the halls of this global powerhouse, I realized that being able to meaningfully participate in conversations with top-level officials to influence life-changing decisions is undeniably significant. Let's all dare to dream beyond the fences. But more importantly, let's be mindful that true preparation lies in maintaining poise once you step into the building.

Join us for the third session of Awareness 360’s Youth Development Programme 2026: Leadership in Action: Tools for Driving the SDGs.

We are honoured to welcome Shomy Hasan Chowdhury, @prevashomy , an award-winning Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) activist from Bangladesh and Co-founder of Awareness 360. Recognized as a 2025 Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, a Forbes 30 Under 30 honouree, and the first Generation17 Young Leader from Asia Pacific by Samsung and UNDP, Shomy has spent over a decade empowering young people in more than 100 countries to take action on the Sustainable Development Goals. As a sought-after public speaker, she has addressed audiences in over 60 countries across six continents and spoken on some of the world’s most influential stages, including the United Nations, The White House, COP, WHO, Harvard University, Cambridge University, the London School of Economics, CHOGM, and the Global Citizen Festival. She has also served as a judge for high-level international programmes, including the UN SDG Action Awards and the Diana Legacy Award.

Just about three months late but here are my top 3 highlights from the 10-Year Reunion Week in China 🇨🇳

1. 1,500+ people being flown into Beijing from across the world to stay at a 5-star hotel and basically have fun all day for a whole week 🫠 Alumni, professors, mentors, speakers, staff… and I finally got to meet my whole class in person 💜 Still overwhelmed by the scale of it all. Only possible by @schwarzmanscholars

2. Hearing the President of Tsinghua University suddenly mention me during his speech at the official reunion event and give me a shoutout as an exemplary alumna for my work with @awareness_360 😭 I genuinely froze for a second like wait… why is he talking about me?! And to be highlighted in a room full of some of the most inspiring people from around the world was such an honour. Some friends immediately texted to show support, confirming I did not mishear it lol.

3. Spending the last evening at Lingling’s family home. Her parents had apparently been preparing incredible home-cooked food for weeks for 40+ people, including a special vegetable brought from over 1000 km away. Everything was ridiculously delicious and it just felt so wholesome. It was my first time visiting a Chinese home and experiencing that kind of hospitality firsthand. We ended the evening singing karaoke together, and even her parents joined in 😭 Massive thank you to Lingling, Brian, and family for hosting all of us with so much warmth and generosity.

Still processing this entire week as I am scrolling through my gallery and feeling very grateful for the people this program brought into my life.

Searching "Prince William" on Google and finding myself was not on my 2026 bingo card 🫠

Incredibly honoured to have reconnected with HRH The Prince of Wales at an intimate reception hosted by The Diana Award during SXSW London. Since our first meeting at Kensington Palace in 2019 (swipe for proof :p), @awareness_360 has grown exponentially, and Prince William and I had a good laugh reflecting on that journey and how much has changed over the years.

Thank you to @dianaaward @tessyojo for the support since I received the lifechanging Legacy Award, and for an unforgettable @sxswlondon week. Always a joy representing Awareness 360 and Bangladesh 🇧🇩 in rooms I never thought I could be in!

Water, dignity, and periods should not be a radical conversation in 2026, and yet here we are 🤷🏾‍♀️

We have spent years talking about pads, but what happens when a girl has no water, no privacy and no safe space to manage her period? That reality still shapes whether she shows up, stays confident, or falls behind.

I sat with Shomy Hasan Chowdhury, co founder of @awareness_360, and it quickly becomes clear that menstrual health is about infrastructure, policy, and ultimately, whose dignity is treated as a priority.

This pohela boishakh marks 12 years since Ammu passed away. It's not like I miss her every second, but random moments bring her back. Sometimes I miss listening to her singing "mor ghumoghore", sometimes I wonder how she would react to discovering chatgpt.

The other day I broke down at a restaurant, triggered by a single "boishakhi alpona" - because it took me straight back to how the police sergeant did not let our car pass through the empty alpona-filled road, and we were stuck in traffic for 1.5 hours on the way to Square Hospital, while Ammu's condition started visibly deteriorating. That man will never know how much Ammu suffered in the car. If only he had let us through...

When I am tired after a long work day, I sometimes remember how she used to leave just the right amount of sugar and milk in the cup itself, so I could literally just pour the tea she had made, stir, and it would be ready to sip. This one time when I was living in the US, despite knowing I wouldn't be able to pick her call due to a school event, she still called me several times, just to listen to my voicemail because she was missing me.

She shows up in my mind and heart in so many ways. But in these twelve years, most of all, I miss being loved unconditionally.

Please keep my Ammu in your prayers or thoughts, in whatever way you believe.
