Cover Story - Peter Adam @peteradam

Why this Cover?

“When asked to pick my favourite cover, my mind started churning through iconic cover images, Ride US, Tread, Ride UK, Dig, BMX Plus, Snap, The Albion, Soul, Freedom, BMX Grind (just kidding). So many to choose from but I kept coming back to this one, Dig Issue 1 for a few different reasons.

I would have been 13 when it came out so the nostalgia runs deep, the mag was made by a guy from Belfast!! (Will Smyth). It features the first pro rider I ever met on the cover (Ian Morris), it was taken by a skate legend, Percy Dean at Radlands , it was also printed in my home town of Bangor Northern Ireland, all those elements combined and it’s just an amazing photo, makes it my all time favourite!”

Following on from our posts earlier this year celebrating and equally commiserating in the news that Crowhurst’s legendary ramp and jump had been taken down after 37 years of service.

A few of us were talking and agreed that Dennis more than deserved a token of our combined (us and BMX’s) gratitude for single handedly creating and keeping going something very special.

Between us we hatched a plan with our combined skill set or lack of in my case to produce a model of the ramp that hook or by crook we would somehow get down to Hastings with the plan of Bas to give it to him (anyone who knows about the place knows it had to be Bas).

Well from a CAD drawing made on a computer in Preston and the 3D printing and fabricating done in Bradford (with input coming up from a metal fabrication shop in Bournemouth) we had a model. All that was needed now was a quick spray paint in a cleaning supplies business in Chester and she was off on her journey down to Hastings, East Sussex and the sleepy village of Crowhurst.

Bas and George (Marshall) headed over to see Dennis last week and sent over the cracking pics you see above. Dennis seemed genuinely thrilled so thanks guys.

Synergy is the word the internet gave to best describe what we achieved together with the model and is often summarized by the phrase “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts” well Dennis was the whole AND all the parts for 37 years for no other reason than to provide something for the local village kids that in turn provided something for nearby Hastings kids & adults and then went on to be known about and ridden by those from across the county, the UK and Worldwide. Imagine how many friendships, interactions, achievements and memories he’s created by his actions. What an achievement!

UK First Issues 1981 - Present.

For a piece of land that covers 0.16% of the world we ain’t half (at least) produced some print publications covering Bicycle Motocross! There is so much rich history in these publications of all genres of BMX some that are still going, some long gone and some on recent hiatus status.

If you’re interested and you should be of what came before and what’s happening now there’s some awesome people/posts/blogs/podcasts for you to gorge on of late. The recent Union Tapes with @markjnoble is a must.

Why this cover?

This is my favourite cover for one simple reason. It was the first bmx magazine that I bought and I’d just bought my first bmx and started going to the skatepark. On holiday in Scarborough I saw this magazine in a little One Stop (Newsagent) I didn’t even know you could get BMX magazines so was buzzing to find that out.

I was already into photography so I spent hours looking through the photos and seeing how the pros worked. This photo now sums up how cool BMX is with the carnage of all those people crowded round the bowl (Stoke Plaza). This magazine opened my eyes to what my future self could be doing.

Berms.

There’s nothing quite like them, the ones featured at the trails are not designed to be past on, they are a solitary thrill. Push in as hard as you dare, travel into them as fast as your stupidity will let you and exit them with your eyes wide and the feeling you craved fulfilled.

Berms are so much more than a change of direction, the noise they make is unique and as close to the feeling of AMSR as my middle aged lifer BMX mind needs to go home feeling good.

I’m as dry guy as the Sahara but that doesn’t stop my love and longing for a berm pic, sound, rip.

Clearly Netley felt the same and all these pics featured in various issue of Case mag during its publication.
