I talked about this on the @primalshiftpodcast, but it’s worth repeating…

A zero calcium score doesn’t mean zero risk.

A standard CT scan only picks up hard, calcified plaque - it completely misses soft plaque, which is actually the stuff that’s more unstable and more likely to cause trouble.

Once plaque becomes calcified, it’s essentially permanent - and it reflects long-term, established cardiovascular risk, with only tiny reductions possible even under the most aggressive therapies.

Soft plaque is different - you can sometimes manage it, stabilize it, even reverse parts of it - but soft plaque doesn’t show up reliably on a standard pure CT scan…if at all.

A standard CT scan also misses the early warning signs your arteries give you years before anything shows up on imaging.
That’s where the deeper arterial metrics come in.

They don’t image plaque - they show how your arteries are actually behaving in real time.

Metrics like:
➡️ central blood pressure
➡️ arterial stiffness
➡️ wave reflection
➡️ SEVR (how well your heart muscle is getting oxygen each beat)

These are the signals that shift early - with soft plaque, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, or the very beginnings of calcification.

So yes, you can have a “perfect” calcium score and still have underlying arterial stress that a CT scan will never pick up.

A CT scan shows what’s sitting in the artery wall. The functional biomarkers we report on with the CONNEQT Pulse show what your arteries are doing right now.

Understanding both sides of that picture has reshaped how I think about cardiovascular health and longevity.

These changed how I eat and how I age.

1g per pound of body weight — not per kilo. The difference matters.

30g minimum per meal to actually trigger muscle protein synthesis.

The older you get, the more protein you need — not less.

Protein timing is mostly a myth. Dosing is everything.
Animal protein and plant protein are not interchangeable.

Your muscle mass is one of the strongest predictors of how well you age. This isn’t about aesthetics.

In the latest episode of The Primal Shift Podcast, @bradkearns1 dives into the science of human endurance. 🧬

While cheetahs and horses dominate short distances, humans outlast them over extreme distances—sometimes even beating endurance horses in 100-mile races!

But does that mean we’re built for marathons? 🤔 Brad challenges the glorification of long-distance running and reveals the shocking impact it has on the body.

In 1990, the average 13-year-old could recall about 13 phone numbers. Today the average adult recalls fewer than four. Dr. Rob Carter, an integrative physiologist who has spent 25 years studying humans under pressure, ran the assessment himself.

His point isn’t that phones are bad. It’s that every convenience replaces a capability, and capabilities you stop using fade. He’s documented the same pattern in navigation, manual dexterity, emotional regulation and social skill. His research on heat stress shows the reverse also holds: the body adapts upward when you challenge it, which means the losses are reversible.

I pushed back on parts of his argument, because “modern life is making us weak” is one of those claims that feels so obviously true nobody checks whether the science holds up. Some of it does. Some of it needs more nuance.

For me the convenience was GPS. I stopped using it and my sense of direction came back.

The FDA just approved a new “safe” sunscreen ingredient. I bought a product with it and sent it back unopened.

Not because the ingredient was the problem — because of everything else they packed in around it…

Animal-based hasn’t made me healthier — I was already healthy.

But it changed something I didn’t expect: I think about food less now than I ever did on paleo or keto.

And there’s a bigger reason we do this that has nothing to do with diet at all.

Can you guess what it is?

5 years of animal-based eating taught me something paleo, keto, and carnivore never did: adherence beats perfection, every time.

One decision, animals at the center of every meal, and the rest is just buy local, buy seasonal, eat what you feel good on.

Why this outlasted every stricter diet I’ve tried (and who should still go stricter first) — full episode. Link in bio 🎧 by @primalshiftpodcast

Sun avoidance alone nearly doubled the death rate in a 30,000-person study.

Isolation, chronic stress, an autoimmune condition since age 21, and 11 years of a ferritin red flag nobody investigated — none of these on their own explain Bryan Johnson’s autoimmune gastritis diagnosis, but stacked together, they start to look like the real cause.

That’s the pattern the full episode 149 of the Primal Shift Podcast breaks down piece by piece — watch it to see how it all connects 🎥 by @primalshiftpodcast

Bryan Johnson’s antibodies against his own stomach cells came back at 103 — five times higher than what’s already considered high.

No H. pylori, a clean colonoscopy, normal blood iron.

On paper, nothing obvious was wrong.

But his ferritin had been low for years, and none of his iron supplements were working.

That’s the thread the full episode 149 of the Primal Shift Podcast follows — from the diagnosis itself to what was actually driving it. Watch it now! 🎥 by @primalshiftpodcast

What’s the actual downside of low testosterone?

I asked myself that this week after seeing 312 ng/dL on my labs at 44 years old.

I’ve run this experiment in both directions. Five years on TRT and hCG, peaked around 1,800 ng/dL. Then I tapered all the way off — and my resting heart rate, my HRV, and my food bill all told me something I wasn’t expecting.

If you’re on the fence about TRT, this episode is the conversation I wish someone had walked me through first.

At 44, I’m stronger, leaner, and sleeping better than I was at 34.

Not because life got easier — it didn’t.

But because I stopped relying on motivation and built systems that work whether I feel like it or not.

This episode breaks down the exact six pillars I use to stay in peak health during the busiest chapter of my life.
