What goes into a silencer beyond its advertised decibel number? In P&S ModCast 469, Matt Landfair interviews Mike Cain of B.O.S.S. Silencers—Black Ops Suppression Systems about the company’s origins, suppressor design, manufacturing, and the tradeoffs that matter when matching a can to a firearm and a purpose.

The conversation moves from rimfire shooting and patrol rifles to pistol-caliber carbines, suppressed lever guns, and precision-rifle competition. Along the way, Cain explains BOSS’s approach to baffle geometry, sound character, durability, service, and product development.

P&S ModCast 76: Aaron Cowan — Pistol Optics, Training, and Performance
October 3, 2026 by Matt Landfair
Originally recorded December 7, 2016. This archival episode returns with a new introduction and sponsor acknowledgments. Equipment references, course schedules, and personal updates in the original conversation reflect that period.

P&S ModCast 76 features Aaron Cowan of Sage Dynamics in a wide-ranging discussion about defensive firearms instruction, pistol red dots, developing shooting skill, and the responsibility that comes with teaching others. Hosted by Matt Landfair, the conversation brings together military, law-enforcement, competition, and firearms-industry perspectives.

The recurring question is why. Why teach a technique? Why choose a particular piece of equipment? What does a drill actually measure, and how does that result relate to the situation a student is preparing for? Across more than three hours, the panel examines how better explanations, honest feedback, and a willingness to reconsider established habits can improve both individual performance and training programs.

My Otto Noizebarrier earbuds have been sitting on a shelf unused for a number of years now. They were great until one earbud permanently died just outside of warranty.

Useful high dollar items with limited warranties, as these have, turn the decision to buy them something that requires a little more consideration.

They really were great when they worked, but is that investment gamble worth it for people that need hard use items but don't have an endless budget? I have a pair of Sordins that are over 20 years old and have been through countless courses and trainings.

Web Gear: The 2.5 Line Setup 🪖

In this breakdown, CTOMS Training Director Adam explains why web gear bridges the gap as a 2.5 line system and how tactical medical deployment changes in complex terrain 🏔️.

The @primaryandsecondary team recently published an article exploring whether web gear is relevant in modern operations. The consensus is yes—especially in specific operations like the Arctic, jungles, training partner forces and 24 hour patrolling.

Biomechanically, web gear distributes weight through a suspension yoke and harness system. Instead of loading a single area, the harness creates a weight transfer, settling 60% of the load onto the pelvic shelf and shifting 40% across the shoulders and thoracic spine. This distribution keeps the chest clear for maximum ventilation.

Unlike a standard chest rig or plate carrier, web gear provides more physical volume across the belt line. A butt pack and large utility pouches remove immediate reliance on a separate backpack, allowing operators to pack patrol rations, extra socks, clothing, rain gear, and a poncho for 24-hour patrol sustainment.

Because of these operational realities, tactical medicine must adapt:

🩺 The Shift to the Pack: When running web gear, medics do not work out of an on-body vest treatment pouch. Because the chest is clear and the belt line is organized for fighting and sustainment, the medical workflow shifts to the med bag. This keeps the system streamlined for movement while keeping advanced medical interventions protected and organized in a centralized, deployment-ready platform.

This approach demonstrates how web gear maintains combat sustainment without sacrificing rapid, mission-specific trauma care.

Stay tuned for our next reel, where we scale up to Third Line gear: the introduction of prolonged casualty care (PCC) equipment.

A defensive firearm display can stop an attack without a shot being fired. It can also escalate a confrontation, expose the defender to prosecution, or cause someone else to perceive an immediate deadly threat. Knowing the difference requires more than knowing how to draw and shoot.

In P&S ModCast 468 — Defensive Display Done Right, host Matt Landfair joins firearms instructor Steve Moses, litigation consultant Shawn Vincent, and criminal defense attorney Don West to connect threat assessment, responsible gun handling, and the legal aftermath of a self-defense encounter.

Defensive Display Is a Decision, Not Just a Technique
The panel distinguishes between communicating that a firearm is present, drawing it, pointing it, and firing it. Those actions can carry different consequences, and the applicable law depends on the jurisdiction and the facts. A label such as “defensive display” does not by itself establish that an action was justified.

Instead, the discussion asks what the defender faced, why the response was necessary, and whether the conduct appeared reasonable in context. Investigators and juries may examine the entire encounter: the initial argument, attempts to disengage, words exchanged, firearm handling, and what happened after the threat changed.

Originally recorded December 7, 2016.

P&S ModCast 77 brings together Alex Hartmann, Rick Labistre, Matt Meckley, Tarrol Peterson, and Adam Wilson for an extended discussion on sniper employment, precision-rifle training, and the culture required to build capable teams.

This is not a gear-list episode or a discussion about simply shooting farther. The panel looks at what makes a sniper program work over time: selection, command support, trust, sustainment training, institutional knowledge, realistic standards, and the people willing to do difficult work without much recognition or support.

Part 1
The first half focuses on building and maintaining capability. The discussion covers the need to develop the right people, preserve lessons learned, and validate performance honestly. Dry practice, meaningful group sizes, confirmed zeros, walk-back drills, ammunition use, training venues, and funding all receive attention. The central point is straightforward: a rifle, a title, and a few impressive shots do not equal a capable sniper.

Part 2
The second half expands into mindset, practical accuracy, moving targets, equipment expectations, mental resilience, and the realities of military and law-enforcement precision-rifle work. The panel discusses competition and cross-training, the danger of risk-averse training culture, realistic standards for rifles and ammunition, and the importance of healthy coping skills. It also examines the difference between people drawn to the image of the role and those committed to its responsibility.

Together, these two parts remain a useful discussion for anyone responsible for developing precision-rifle capability—or for anyone trying to separate actual preparation from appearance.

Clip from ModCast 77 - Sniper originally released 12/07. This will be released in audio form complete for the first time next week.

In this five-hour two-part ModCast, Alex Hartmann, Rick Labistre, Matt Meckley, Tarrol Peterson, and Adam Wilson take an unvarnished look at the sniper role: the people it requires, the programs that sustain it, and the training that proves capability. From selection, command support, and institutional knowledge to group size, moving targets, ammunition, resilience, and precision-rifle employment, this is a practical discussion about building competence instead of chasing the image of competence. by @primaryandsecondary
