It’s been a long time coming… but I finally have music! Descry Life, my first single release is coming out next Friday, February 14. Happy Valentine’s Day!

This was one of the first songs I wrote after I moved to Cleveland, and I’m psyched for yall to hear it! I was lucky to have the help of talented musicians and friends Suz Slezak and Alec Spiegelman who added so much color and heart into the recording with their work and collaboration.

We’re playing at @dunlapscornerbar this Friday! It’s a birthday show for my good friend @miguel_cafe_music so we’ll be joining his band, as well as @shorttstories and @poorduncan with music at 8pm. His birthday is actually today (and @kamasherm is tomorrow) but I believe that we can still celebrate on Friday.

I’ve taken a few days to try and process our SOLD OUT show, “We’re All Gonna Die,” last Saturday, but still… I can’t explain the state that I’m in. For myself and many others on stage, it was a pipe dream just to be part of a show honoring the music of Sufjan Stevens, let alone be up there with a full ensemble of 13 of Cleveland’s most phenomenal musicians, with Bryan Kennard not only lending his flute, but also commanding a soundboard that brought the magic of the Bop Stop itself to life.

To play this music for an audience so attentive and appreciative and responsive, where the connection between the stage and the house was so electric and open, pure magic.
To friends and family, strangers from near and far, including a few who introduced themselves as having traveled from Chicago, thank you for being a part of this unforgettable night.

There’s no way this show could have came to be, had it not been for a community of hands and minds, specifically so many people who revere Sufjan Stevens’ music. Every second spent working on this show by everyone was a labor of love which reflected in the performance.

The artistic decisions and ideas everyone brought to the music and dedication to the shared vision made leading the ensemble a truly joyful experience, almost as if it were effortless.

If you weren’t able to join us on July 4th, the room was abuzz with the potential for a bigger story. There is continued interest amongst the ensemble in working more Sufjan Stevens songs to compose more shows like this one. Stay tuned!

My personal boundless gratitude to Sufjan Stevens for forging and housing such a beautiful world of music. It’s as if I were asleep and you woke me up again. My faith is if anything we’ve done reaches you, it makes you proud of your ingenuity and impact on musicians and human artistry. As you’ve had an undeniable effect on my love of music and of making music, it only seems fitting to honor your work in this way. HELP! I need to promote the @sufjan show that 12 incredible musicians and I are putting on at @bopstoptms this Saturday, but I can’t stop singing songs that we won’t be playing there!

Eugene is the first song of his I ever learned to play. When Carrie & Lowell came out I was the music director of WDCE at UR, and I’m sure I neglected some other releases around the time because I could not stop listening to it over and over again. I then spent the entire summer of 2015 playing along to the album until I had all of the songs memorized. Eugene completely captured me with its simple instrumentation, brisk chord changes, and beautiful narrative about fragmented memories haunting you forever as they warp around the changes in your life. Until the day I die, i will never forget this song.

I cannot express how much beauty Sufjan’s music has brought my life, but I feel so much gratitude to be able to listen and learn about himself, myself, all of us from it. Practicing, dissecting, reconstructing, and reimagining the music for our show on Saturday has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my musical life.
